BINGO! only needed the correct driver (/opt/brother/Printers/mfcj5720dw/cupswrapper/brother_mfcj5720dw_printer_en.ppd) and protocol (ipp)

well, Brother Skanlite simply says "error: file does not exist" when I try to save(!) a successful scan with 2400dpi. AcquireImages simply segfaults

(just scanned a selected part of that A4 page in 2400^2 resol, and it worked just fine ;-P )

but honestly since I checked that MFC-J5720, I consider actually getting some of those transformer toys and see if they can outsmart the MFC

I think it's pretty hard to wind a single surface that can't tilt or protrude to make the think twice as large, or at last flip open and reveal some jacks or ink cassettes
