<azonenberg_work> Woo, just ordered four 2 foot flexible jacketed BNC-to-MMCX cables
<azonenberg_work> It's RG174 cable so should be good up to at least 1 GHz, overkill for my 350 MHz scope
<azonenberg_work> This will let me hook up four of my 20x transmission line probes to the scope at once :)
* azonenberg_work wants to try probing both legs of an LVDS pair plus some other stuff and see how it looks
<cr1901_modern> I managed to hose and un-hose a board in the past 2 hours while trying to update firmware... woot. Can't think of anything I'd rather do on a Friday night...
<azonenberg_work> Lol
* azonenberg_work is not looking forward to dealing with $WIFE's computer when he gets home
<azonenberg_work> we've been having massive disk performance issues for ages
<azonenberg_work> i think either the sata cable(s) are loose/failing/out of spec or the mobo sata controller is having issues
<azonenberg_work> or possibly the controller on one of the drives
<azonenberg_work> reads just hang, for extended periods of time, and smart shows nothing wrong
<whitequark> dmesg?
<azonenberg_work> Nothing shows up in either windows event logs or syslog
<azonenberg_work> this is a virtualized windows system in vmware on linux
<cr1901_modern> azonenberg_work: Is the disk almost full?
<azonenberg_work> no, not even close
<azonenberg_work> its a raid1 of two 1TB WD RE4 drives iirc
<azonenberg_work> soft raid on debian host
<azonenberg_work> and i've seen some general funniness that makes me think the host might be at fault
<azonenberg_work> But not 100% certain

<X-Scale> ( Zorix : escaping as far north as possible during the night with less jammings on the highways is not an option ? )
<Zorix> hey
<Zorix> i dont know, i dont want to be stuck on the road
<azonenberg_work> Zorix: trying to escape from where?
<Zorix> i think that spilled out from the mame channel
<Zorix> somehow
<Zorix> im in irma's path
<azonenberg_work> Are you near sea level or elevated a bit?
<Zorix> i will get her big stinkin eye tomorrow
<Zorix> im in a condo 3 floors up
<Zorix> so i should be alright
<Zorix> but they may force me to leave anyways
<azonenberg_work> Flooding wouldnt be a big issue if you're that high up, i'd be more worried about the thing coming down on top of you :p
<Zorix> building is rated to handle it
<Zorix> well theres 1 floor above me
<azonenberg_work> Or the windows blowing out and peppering you with delicious glass shrapnel
<Zorix> so i should be protected
<Zorix> hehe
<Zorix> i have hurricane windows
<Zorix> should take 140 mph repeated impacts
<azonenberg_work> and how fast are the winds they expect? :p
<Zorix> probably about 150 or so
<Zorix> but my windows face north and south
<Zorix> i think most of the winds will be east/west due to the eye coming over
<azonenberg_work> Hope you're prepared to be stuck there with no utilities at all for a while
<Zorix> well in a way i am.. i have been through a few hurricane impacts so i always keep supplies here
<Zorix> but i wont have any a/c so its going to get deadly hot
<azonenberg_work> good luck
* azonenberg_work is flying home to his own apocalypse tomorrow (on site with a customer in the middle of nowhere tonight)
<Zorix> thanks i appreciate it
<azonenberg_work> but not quite as bad
<azonenberg_work> Just raining ashes from a forest fire upwind
<Zorix> ohh
<Zorix> i know a guy out there that was telling me about that
<azonenberg_work> It's also earthquake country... fingers crossed we don't get one for a while :p
<Zorix> scary stuff too
<Zorix> ahh
<azonenberg_work> last thing we need is one on top of all this
<Zorix> i think mexico got one this week
<awygle> Big one, 8.0+
<azonenberg_work> Yeah i know
<balrog> /msg azonenberg_work still onsite eh?
<balrog> whoops :D
<cr1901_modern> This is why I never use the /-commands except for "/me"
<azonenberg_work> lol
* azonenberg_work once knew a guy who would /me in meatspace conversatoins
<cr1901_modern> b/c watch me accidentally reveal my password hunter2-style in a msg meant for NickSer v
<azonenberg_work> Lol
<Zorix> haha i remember that bash.org quote
* awygle sits next to a woman who /mes on the phone all day long
<cr1901_modern> X-Scale: Ping if you're still around
<cr1901_modern> eh actually nevermind... meatspace calls
<mtp> teh
<rqou> woo, desk get
<rqou> now i have three
<awygle> i should have a desk now but i stripped a screw all to fuck, and it is resisting my attempts to drill it out :(
<rqou> i got really lucky that the desk just barely fit in my car

<azonenberg_work> awygle: sounds like a challenge if i ever heard one
<awygle> i'm open to suggestions (that won't get me registered as a superfund site)
<awygle> current plan is grab my dad's dremel and make myself a flathead slot tomorrow
<azonenberg_work> First suggestion is a screw remover tool
<azonenberg_work> they make a thing that is left hand threaded and is designed to basically drill its way into a stripped screw and attach to it
<azonenberg_work> then as you tighten this thing you're pulling the old screw out
<azonenberg_work> i forget what its called
<rqou> those suck
<azonenberg_work> rqou: i mean there's no *good* way to remove a stripped screw
<azonenberg_work> awygle: yes thats what i'm thinking of
<rqou> is it possible to somehow grab the screw head with vicegrips?
<azonenberg_work> also there's a much bigger superfund site in the bainbridge island harbor
<azonenberg_work> yours will go largely unnoticed :p
<rqou> wait, and it's not your house nor john's house? :P :P
<awygle> i just assumed it was only a matter of time before rqou suggested white fuming nitric acid to eat the screw, or something like that
<awygle> and i.... want to live :P
<rqou> i don't actually possess WFNA
<rqou> also, it tends to passivate metal
<awygle> i have to say, i'm impressed as hell with the screws IKEA decided to use for these shelf things
<awygle> i expected it to crack like an egg under pressure
<balrog> My luck with screw extractors has been hit or miss
<rqou> my experience is that the screw broke the extractor
<rqou> i eventually took it to the ME machine shop and borrowed one of their huge vicegrips
<awygle> do verilog and vhdl _require_ event-driven simulation in the standards?
<rqou> i believe vhdl does
<awygle> (as opposed to 'oblivious' timestep-based simulation)
<rqou> hmm, you don't _have_ to
* azonenberg_work requires use of always @(*) in his combinatorial code
<azonenberg_work> always @(foo, bar) is banned
<rqou> but you might as well, because vhdl does mandate a proper ordering of how processes are executed
<rqou> and vhdl also mandates working delta cycles
<azonenberg_work> may be slightly faster to simulate, but it's sooo easy to get wrong and get sim-hw mismatches
<azonenberg_work> so i just disallow it in my coding style
* azonenberg_work really needs to write a linter that checks for all this...
<awygle> i was just looking at this paper http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?rep=rep1&type=pdf&doi=10.1.1.217.4786 and they do 'oblivious' sim, which sounds noncompliant to the standard to me
<rqou> they're doing gate-level sim, right?
<rqou> it works then
<rqou> no, it isn't compliant with what VHDL demands for a "VHDL simulator"
<awygle> well sure it _works_, that's not the point :P
<Zorix> is that an ip and port number in that url?
<awygle> pretty sure it's a DOI number https://www.doi.org/
<Zorix> ohh
<Zorix> interesting format
