wow, i decided to try and hack a <redacted> and the tooling surrounding this is a complete disaster
<awygle>
all tooling is a disaster
<rqou>
this one is particularly bad because this hardware is old (not from this decade) and obscure

this thing has bitrotted so much there isn't even a working hello world
<rqou>
it's so weird for me to actually experience "bitrot is real"
<rqou>
although imho the weirdest feeling of bitrot is looking at dreamcast stuff
<rqou>
because it's modern enough that things like linux and the interwebs existed
<rqou>
but it's old enough that all the info is on weird forum sites that have since been eaten up by the huge white-on-blue-f
<rqou>
and it's old enough to be "retro" now
<futarisIRCcloud>
Dreamcast stuff is still around most places. Plenty of info on assemblergames etc. A few open source FPGA dreamcast to HDMI adapters and GD emulators too.
<rqou>
> assemblergames
<rqou>
yeah, when it's not down for the bajillionth time
<rqou>
and yeah, i have an ebay dc->vga adapter
<rqou>
at least dc is modern enough that vga existed already as well
<rqou>
and fortunately vga hasn't quite disappeared yet

Okay, the chips4makers guy seems to be somewhat serious about making something useable.
<Prf_Jakob>
There are of course lots of obsticales for it to happen.

Prf_Jakob, whats chips4makers?
<pie_>
effort to crowd_____ making chips?
<Prf_Jakob>
pie_: Something like that, a project to make a as FOSS as possible toolchain to make ASICs
<pie_>
ah my first guess was about manufacturing, but thats sort of a prereq i suppose
<Prf_Jakob>
It's a toolchain and manufacturing project.
<Sourcerer>
Hi!
<Sourcerer>
I am thinking about trying a Yosys+Greenpak project.
<Sourcerer>
It seems that there was quite some progress on it about year or a half ago, but it does not seem like much progress lately.
<Sourcerer>
Are there any problems with it?

Prf_Jakob: just noticing a trend here ;)
<Prf_Jakob>
strfry: Oh the libresilicon project is just one guy as well?
<sorear>
Prf_Jakob: is the person you know more credible than libresilicon? we looked at libresilicon's materials in here the other day and it's not clear he has ever seen the inside of a fab
<Prf_Jakob>
sorear: I would say so, because he works at company that does ASIC services.
