you can always go live in a flyover state if you don't like it :P

i did that for the last ~year

no, but a lot of my neighbors did

only the balm of a 3 bedroom apartment for 900$/mo eased my pain

how many MAGA hats did you see? :P
<awygle>
(just kidding nothing eased that particular pain but let's keep it light eh)

what's wrong with a maga hat?
<mtp>
nothing, if you're okay with people thinking you're an american fascist
<azonenberg>
awygle: I live out on bainbridge now and am considering moving to poulsbo when my lease runs out
<azonenberg>
Not like downtown, more like unincorporated kitsap near poulsbo :p
<azonenberg>
You can get really nice stuff cheap there if you don't mind a bus-ferry-bike commute to work
<azonenberg>
Right now i have bike-ferry-bike
<cr1901_modern>
"nothing, if you're okay with people thinking you're an american fascist" <-- Good hint you're probably an asshole too
<mtp>
but you repeat yourself
<cr1901_modern>
mtp: I was agreeing with you
<mtp>
i was too
<mtp>
"an american fascist, and an asshole, but i repeat myself"
<mtp>
;p
<cr1901_modern>
Ahhh, sorry lol...
<mtp>
no worries
<azonenberg>
So much for getting coding done tonight...
<azonenberg>
all the weekend chores i didn't do this weekend piled up :p
<azonenberg>
plus inspecting and inventorying gear for next mission
<cr1901_modern>
I was productive earlier, but now EDONTCARE
<cr1901_modern>
now I'm just bringing local copies of my software up to date (incl openfpga)
<mtp>
azonenberg, relatable
<mtp>
only, magnify that by like 3 months of weekend chores
<azonenberg>
Lol
<azonenberg>
mtp: i'm going through my spreadsheet of shelf-stable food and updating things
<mtp>
nice
<azonenberg>
looks like i ate the last 2015-dated bacon-cheddar sandwich the other day so now i have all 2016 stuff there
<mtp>
i... need to do things like that, honestly
<azonenberg>
etc
<azonenberg>
I have MREs, nuts, energy bars, dried things, etc in like nine different places that i have to keep track of, rotate stock, make sure i have enough calories everywhere, etc
<mtp>
oh i just have regular house stuff
<azonenberg>
I have the pocket of my load-bearing vest, my 24-hour SAR backpack, the extra bag I throw in there if I expect to be out overnight
<azonenberg>
another day's food i leave at base camp
<mtp>
but i've been meaning to take actual inventory of all my stuff because that's a good thing to do
<mtp>
you are far more prepared than i ;p
<azonenberg>
Two pre-staged refill bags that i keep at home if I get two calls back-to-back without a chance to resupply and inventory
<mtp>
if the world ended tomorrow i'd probably just go with it
<azonenberg>
then the chest rig and pack for my fun hiking
<azonenberg>
mtp: well i'm also a first responder, so it kinda comes with the territory
<azonenberg>
This is not gear prepped for the end of the world, this is for next time i have to haul some grandmother out of a national park on short notice
<azonenberg>
And if the SHTF close to home, it'll do double duty for that - but that isn't the point
<azonenberg>
I just inventory my consumables because i have a decent amount of stuff and i don't want a repeat of the mistake i made when i first got into sar
<azonenberg>
i bought a case of stuff, only noted the pack date on the case and not the individual things inside
<azonenberg>
and found myself with a huge supply of 2013-dated stuff that had to get used up
<azonenberg>
me and the wife were eating 2013-2014 mre entees for half the summer worth of weekend hikes just to get rid of them
<azonenberg>
At this point i'm down to one 2014, everything else is 2015 or later
<azonenberg>
and at our current optempo, i'll have no trouble using that up between training and real rescues long before it goes bad
<azonenberg>
As long as i keep track of what's what, and don't find a 2015 pepperoni sandwich under my sleeping bag five years from now :p

<cr1901_modern>
The scenery reminds me of when I was 16 and went hiking in Pisgah National Forest for a week, but a bit prettier
<azonenberg>
I was out on Hurricane Ridge yesterday
<azonenberg>
The views there are amazing
<azonenberg>
I got to watch the sun set over the Olympic National Park yesterday
<azonenberg>
from the ridgeline about a mile above sea level
<azonenberg>
tl;dr this badass of a grandma had been lost for six days, had no idea where she was but had built a pretty awesome shelter out of natural materials and found a source of relatively drinkable water
<azonenberg>
was even eating ants and grubs for food
<azonenberg>
Park ranger in a helo found her from the air and radioed coordinates to one of my unit's ground teams who met up with her, then coast guard came in with a bigger helo that had a winch and flew her out to the hospital to get checked out
<azonenberg>
sounds like she was in really good shape given the circumstances
<azonenberg>
They picked her up in the late afternoon and so my team was waiting back at base camp for the guys further out in the field to hike back so we could go home
<azonenberg>
Had an awesome view of the mountains
<cr1901_modern>
Wow, what an awesome woman
<azonenberg>
The ironic bit is, her late husband saved her lie
<azonenberg>
life*
<azonenberg>
She had originally gone out there to scatter his ashes
<azonenberg>
One of our teams found the urn (which she had dropped after realizing she was lost) and radioed base, who confirmed the name was a match
<azonenberg>
So now we knew what path she had taken and focused efforts in that area
<azonenberg>
turned out she was outside the original search area
<rqou>
how do these people initially get reported as lost?
<azonenberg>
In this case, a family member who usually talked to her daily had no contact with her Monday night (when she first went out there)
<azonenberg>
called the sheriff for a welfare check, they went to her house and did not find her or the car
<azonenberg>
Tuesday, after still not hearing from her, they filed a missing persons report
<azonenberg>
Shortly after the county sheriff over there put out a press release with her description, the vehicle, etc and asked anyone who saw either her or the car to call 911 and report it
<azonenberg>
Nothing happened for a while
<azonenberg>
The sheriff knew she was gone but had no clue where to look

Saturday afternoon, a park ranger found her car
<azonenberg>
At that point we had a last known location that was actually useful (vs her house), so the sheriff and park service called in clallam county sar (the local team) plus mutual aid from kitsap (my unit)
<azonenberg>
We got the page late saturday and left in the middle of the night, got to the park right around sunrise
<azonenberg>
and found her late afternoon
<azonenberg>
If she had told someone she was going to the hurricane ridge area, we probably would have found her like weds or thurs instead of sunday
<azonenberg>
Thankfully she survived that long despite having no gear
<azonenberg>
But we've had cases that didn't end so well
<azonenberg>
In general we strongly advise people going for hikes to tell someone where they're going and what route they're taking, so if they don't come home sar has a starting point to go from

morbid thought: at least mt olympus doesn't have something like aokigahara
<rqou>
can you imagine being sar in that area?
<azonenberg>
To be honest that was one of our thoughts as to how this case might have gone down
<azonenberg>
When we heard she had her husband's remains with her
<azonenberg>
we considered the possibility that she might have wanted to join him
<azonenberg>
People do off themselves in the woods
<azonenberg>
A few years before i joined, there was a rash of suicides, i forget how many
<azonenberg>
but a significant fraction of the team quit because they couldn't handle it
<azonenberg>
Thankfully that seems to have died down, we've had fatalities since i joined but none were self-inflicted
<azonenberg>
and i'm not aware of any specific locations that are known for it

So, to get back to on-topic discussion... One chip I'd really like to see decapped and photographed are one of the ones in those R4 (et al.) flash carts. I'm curious to see what micro they're using, or if it's fully-custom silicon or just a mask ROM-based part or what.
<cyrozap>
I've always been curious how they worked, but as is often the case in the video game console-hacking scene (or at least was the case a few years ago), the technical details are hard to find.

<balrog>
jhol: I've been around IRC for a long time and channel policies regarding offtopic discussion are very much up to the discretion of the people running the channel
<balrog>
I personally don't mind off-topic discussion it if it doesn't get in the way of on-topic discussion
<balrog>
that said, whining about someone allegedly trashing you on twitter in the public channel is not cool
<jhol>
dude - I'm not whining - I was just shocked at the tweet as it bore no relation to the actual conversation
<balrog>
yeah well no one here has any context as to what tweet and such. stuff like that is best left to PM
<jhol>
and furthermore, I'm cool with off topic conversation, but when it starts dividing up large segments of the population and throwing labels at them, that's not good for achieving the task at hand
<balrog>
jhol: so far you're the only one who's complained.
<jhol>
sure... ok, well does that matter to you if someone complains? I think it should matter. if it doesn't matter to you, I'll probably work on open fpga stuff some place else
