<CarpeOmnia>
can you use this open source software for commercial applications?
promach has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<balrog>
CarpeOmnia: yes, as long as you follow the terms of the license, which may require sharing some or all of your source code
<CarpeOmnia>
hey
<balrog>
(Depends on the license)
<CarpeOmnia>
hmmm
<CarpeOmnia>
then I think I'll stick with the proprietary software
<CarpeOmnia>
still I bet this makes for a great teaching tool
<balrog>
CarpeOmnia: read the license for the specific software you want to use. Much free and open source software is under a so-called "permissive" license, which only requires attribution to the author
<balrog>
There are significant online resources on this already and I won't do this research for you :)
<CarpeOmnia>
Yeah, I will just wanted to get a quick overview of the terms
<CarpeOmnia>
lol, I love doing research, that's all I do
<lain>
hrm
<CarpeOmnia>
so if you could just do this one little piece for me
<CarpeOmnia>
jk
<CarpeOmnia>
wtf
<CarpeOmnia>
who are you?
<lain>
CarpeOmnia: when you say "for commercial applications" do you mean using the code as part of a piece of commercial software, or do you mean using the open-source software to work on commercial products (but not using the open-source code in your own product)?
<balrog>
There's that part too, which I missed :)
<balrog>
And in this care is pretty important
<CarpeOmnia>
is your real name lain?
<CarpeOmnia>
do you know me?
<CarpeOmnia>
do I know you?
<balrog>
Is yours CarpeOmnia?
<lain>
CarpeOmnia: I go by lain irl, but it's not my legal name [yet?]
<balrog>
Do I know you?
<lain>
CarpeOmnia: I don't know if I know you :P
<CarpeOmnia>
omg
<CarpeOmnia>
it is me
<CarpeOmnia>
wow...
<lain>
wat
<CarpeOmnia>
that is really strange
<CarpeOmnia>
I go by lain irl, but it's not my legal name [yet?]
<CarpeOmnia>
you must be... 16? 17?
<balrog>
CarpeOmnia: don't be weird
<lain>
CarpeOmnia: 30
<CarpeOmnia>
sorry... but this is actually quite weird
<CarpeOmnia>
I've never met another lain
<lain>
oic
<CarpeOmnia>
you know what that name means?
<CarpeOmnia>
what does that name mean to you?
<lain>
well for me it started as a nickname, because my friends say I resemble Lain from Serial Experiments: Lain :P
<CarpeOmnia>
are you a sociopath? sorry... everything else of importance just went out the window
<qu1j0t3>
........
<CarpeOmnia>
yep that's how it started with me
<CarpeOmnia>
I can't imagine how a 30 year old would get it though
* lain
is a lil lost as to what's going on :P
<CarpeOmnia>
but it's such an old series... I don't know how at 16 or 17 year old would have even heard of it
<lain>
I got the nickname back in high school
<lain>
it stuck :P
<CarpeOmnia>
I'm sorry I need to talk to you in private chat
<lain>
anyway to wrap up what I was saying: what balrog said earlier about open source licenses generally applies to using the open code in your own software. if you're just using the open-source software to do work, which you then sell, that's another matter entirely and is almost always okay. but the same basic rule applies: check the license
<CarpeOmnia>
creative commons baby!
<balrog>
Yep, most licenses don't apply if you are using the software to compile code with them. However the license of included libraries may definitely apply
<CarpeOmnia>
you don't have to tell me, I was kidding about asking for you to actually research it for me
<balrog>
Creative Commons doesn't make all much sense for code...
<CarpeOmnia>
well here's the thing
<CarpeOmnia>
the software
<CarpeOmnia>
it uses VHDL?
<balrog>
What do you mean?
<CarpeOmnia>
are some of the libraries included part of openfpga
<balrog>
I think there are some as part of yosys but I'm not 100% sure
<CarpeOmnia>
just because... VHDL is technically a programming language
<balrog>
But those are Verilog. Not VHDL
<balrog>
I don't know of a working VHDL workflow that can target hardware, yet.
<CarpeOmnia>
ah I see

rqou: well it's an unexpectedly smart cat
<rqou>
everybody says that about their cat :P
* rqou
wants a cat but can't in the current living situation
<rqou>
oh whitequark: i have some questions about your opinions regarding cross-compiling
<rqou>
what is the proper way to get pkg-config to get out of my way and use "this set of binaries i have right here in this directory"
<whitequark>
rqou: write the appropriate .pc file and drop it into PKG_CONFIG_PATH
<rqou>
but what if my system _also_ has that package?
<rqou>
can pkg-config accidentally pick up the wrong one?
