hi all; can someone help me with a MII problem?
fredl has quit [Client Quit]
<KotCzarny>
dont ask to ask, just ask
<Igor2>
ohh, ok
<mripard>
icenowy[m]: I guess it can, yes, why?
<KotCzarny>
if anyone would be able to answer, they will
<Igor2>
I have a H3 with MII mode external switch chuip; I think I got everythign right and u-boot sees the ethernet device but the linux kernel doesn't show any eth in dmesg; do I need some dts file?
<KotCzarny>
you can probably use any gigabit based h3 device dts as a comparison
nuuuciano has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]
<KotCzarny>
for example orange pi plus 2e
<Igor2>
where could I find those? I was googling but all I found was patches and partial stuff
<KotCzarny>
any recent vanilla kernel should do
<KotCzarny>
unless they havent patched it back yet
<KotCzarny>
gmac for h3 exists since 4.15
<Igor2>
I run some random armbian, 3.4.113-sun8i, do I have any chance with that?
<KotCzarny>
3.4 is legacy and doesnt need dts or patching
<KotCzarny>
for random armbian all you need to do is proper fex
<KotCzarny>
as i've said, use opi+2e as a base
<Igor2>
I believe I have the right fex, when I didn't have the right fex, u-boot didn't find the ethernet
<KotCzarny>
uboot != linux
<Igor2>
what I have now is u-boot announcing ethernet is fine, then nothing on linux
<Igor2>
ok, so I need two fex files?
<KotCzarny>
no
<KotCzarny>
uboot doesnt use fex
<Igor2>
ahh, ok
<KotCzarny>
uboot loads fex or dt for linux
<Igor2>
thanks, I'll keep tuning the dex then
<Igor2>
s/dex/fex/
<Igor2>
it doesn't even try to communicate on the MDIO line so I guess it's some basic property that I got wrong
<Igor2>
found somethign in dmesg
<Igor2>
devm_pinctrl is failed
<Igor2>
gmac0: probe of gmac0 failed with error -22
<KotCzarny>
what is your device?
<KotCzarny>
are you sure it's gigabit based?
<Igor2>
nah, it's 100 mbit
<Igor2>
CPU: H3
<Igor2>
switch: ksz8895
<KotCzarny>
for 100mbit you can use orange pi pc as a comparison
<Igor2>
thanks, checking
<Igor2>
orange pi pc seems to be using the builtin phy
JohnDoe_71Rus has quit [Quit: Miranda IM! Smaller, Faster, Easier. http://miranda-im.org]

I need to use the MII as I have an external phy (in that ksz8895)
<KotCzarny>
usually they use external phy for gigabit
<KotCzarny>
and internal for 100
<KotCzarny>
your device is connected to something weird?
xerpi has joined #linux-sunxi
<Igor2>
well, the ksz8895 looks like a standard 100 mbit MII port to me, shouldn't be weird
<KotCzarny>
is it your design?

strange... the example fex files I found on the web sued [gmac0]; now I went and grep'd all the fexes shipped with the armbian I boot, for gmac_used = 1 (that's when we use MII) and it seems they use [gmac_para]
<mripard>
icenowy[m]: using drm_hwcomposer? I'm sure this is something that can be fixed
<Igor2>
(couldn't find doc about this section anywhere, just comments in random fex files)
<mripard>
we cannot really have an ARGB/RGBA plane as the lower one, so this wouldn't be very useful in your case I guess
<Igor2>
at least one dmesg error messages is gone now and only the -22 remains, I guess it silently ignored my [gmac0]
<Igor2>
"probe of gmac0 failed" "gmac_used" -> 2 hits on google, it's really hard to find anything
<KotCzarny>
though hmm, no gmac there
<Igor2>
yup, the fex guide
<Igor2>
that's what's totally missing gmac info :)
<Igor2>
I use that guide to understand port config, managed to get up the leds and buttons with that, it's great
<Igor2>
also, things seem to be changing a lot, like this [gmac0] vs. [gmac_para] - without error messages, it's really ahrd to find there are variants, and then which variant I need to use
<KotCzarny>
maybe you will find some comments usefuk
<KotCzarny>
*useful
<naggety>
Hi. I hope someone can help me with this. I'm making a sunxi-linux system for an A20 SoC using Buildroot. I want to have 2 monitors: one LCD and one analog TV (CVBS, PAL). At the same time I want to use TV decoder to input image from 4 cameras.
IgorPec has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<Igor2>
hehe, basically the same thing that I have here
<Igor2>
let me compare byte-to-byte
<naggety>
My problem is that when I modprobe that driver for TV decoder, the second monitor (the TV one) stop working
IgorPec has joined #linux-sunxi
<Igor2>
hmm, and you use [gmac0] !
fkluknav has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]

However, LCD + TV decoder work fine. LCD + TV output work fine. TV output + TV decoder work fine. All three at the same time doesn't work

<KotCzarny>
also, since your's is custom board, i would check what they wired and where
<Igor2>
good, other than the section header and the phys enable power pin our configs are the same
<naggety>
I would appreciate any clue about how to solve this
<Igor2>
KotCzarny, yup, I've checked the wiring a few times
<Igor2>
I have an 500 mhz scope attached ti the MDIO line
<Igor2>
looked up what I need to see there
<Igor2>
btu so far nothing is ever sent
GrimKriegor has joined #linux-sunxi
<Igor2>
so it's like kernel looks at the gmac and shuts it down before it would even try to communicate anything on the MII
<Igor2>
the gmac_phy_power is a gpio line that supposed to enable the external phy chip, right?
<KotCzarny>
i'm not an expert unfortunatelly

haha, cute, I google for the exact error message from dmesg, and get only 4 hits, from which the only relevant looking one is written is some forum post written in chinese
<Igor2>
ok, it's [gmac0] that really works - if I have both [gmac0] and [gmac_para], I get the same error message as if I had only [gmac0]
<Igor2>
I wonder why all the other MII fex files shipped with the same system say [gmac_para]
<KotCzarny>
i see no gmac_para in any of my fexes
<Igor2>
must have been some early version oslt
<KotCzarny>
to see what and where it's really used you should grab kernel source and grep
fkluknav has joined #linux-sunxi
<Igor2>
hehe, I hoped I could avoid that
<KotCzarny>
legacy code is nonstandard
<Igor2>
anwyay maybe that pinctrl error will lead me somewhere
<KotCzarny>
so you cant rely on obvious uses
<Igor2>
devm_pinctrl_get_select_default() this fails I think
<Igor2>
looks like it decides if it's internal PHY or not, if not internal starts with this devm_pinctrl_get_select_default() call, fails, exists
<Igor2>
that explains why there's no signal seen on the scope
<Igor2>
hmm, maybe I have some port collision
<Igor2>
nope, no luck, all the PD ports are referenced in _used=0 sections only
hanni76 has joined #linux-sunxi
return0e has joined #linux-sunxi

nice... searchign for devm_pinctrl_get_select_default() to figure what it supposed to do, all I find are patches removing this call from various drivers - sounds promising
