<BenG83> icenowy[m], is there anything special regarding V3s booting?
<BenG83> just built u-boot 2018.01 and I don't even see SPL output
<BenG83> the test image works

<dddddd> smaeul, are you around?
<smaeul> yes
<dddddd> Hi! Excuse me, a couple of questions about ATF
<dddddd> I'm using the repo linked in the u-boot's README.sunxi64
<dddddd> but I just saw you have an updated one. Can I use yours instead?
<dddddd> And... what's the upstreaming status of your work?
<smaeul> yes. depending on the branch you're using (on both repos), my updated one may be worse or better
<dddddd> branch allwinner, for (A64) Olimex TERES-I
<dddddd> I didn't test yours yet
<smaeul> my "allwinner" branch should be mostly equivalent, then, in functionality
BenG83 has joined #linux-sunxi
<smaeul> upstreaming status is that initial support has been submitted to ARM
<dddddd> nice! I'll try your branch this weekend.
anarsoul|2 has joined #linux-sunxi
<kilobyte> dddddd: on Debian? (because you quote README.sunxi64; AFAIK Ubuntu doesn't sync u-boot packages from Debian)
<kilobyte> dddddd: if so, you might want apt install atf-allwinner && install-sunxi64 /your/block/device
<dddddd> kilobyte, I'm using u-boot from git directly.
<kilobyte> ah
* kilobyte wanted someone suicidal enough to try brand new packaging :p
<dddddd> kilobyte, but is good to know there's packages. I'm using debian in fact.
<dddddd> kilobyte, so it seems it's based on apritzel work https://packages.debian.org/sid/atf-allwinner
<kilobyte> yeah; same as anarsoul's save for one slightly massaged commit
<dddddd> Is there any other ATF repo I should know about? (I think smaeul's is the more advanced, right?)

<smaeul> apritzel's is the original, mine started the rebase on upstream, Icenowy has h6 support and a couple of device-specific branches. those are the ones I know of with unique commits
<dddddd> OK. Thank you all! I'll keep you posted.

<Strontium> hanetzer: don't know where he works. but they seem to be making good progress at the moment. Updates show goals being hit every couple of days at the moment.
<hanetzer> excellent. mayhaps it will be viable by the time that vpu kickstarter is delivered on
<hanetzer> would deffo make sunxi chips the best foss arm SoC's available :)
<Strontium> yup, i think there is a lot of people who would be happy to chip in to see it happen too, given the success of the cpu kickstarter campaign.
<Strontium> vpu
<hanetzer> ja. had I enough disposable income I'd have chipped in myself :)

<hanetzer> Strontium: would be nice if they all got funded, or even if they are not funded the guys continue to tinker/help others tinker to get them done :)
<Strontium> hanetzer: agreed, but its the nature of these things. Funding it accelerates development, so the unfunded items will still probably get done some time, just not as quickly.
<hanetzer> yep.

<Strontium> its funded the driver working on newer chips, like the H3/H5/A64 which is nice. The base should support Mpeg2 and H264. If they can get another 4300 Euro in the next 17 days then they will also add H265 decoding, which would be nice.
<Strontium> but even having mpeg2 and H264 on all those chips is a fantastic outcome.

<Strontium> 265 is dramatically higher compression, and kind of essential for 4K video.
<KotCzarny> more important being what formats will be still used for services like netflix, youtube etc
<KotCzarny> or people started using 4k in cctv?
<hanetzer> KotCzarny: well, even if they don't, even a 1080p stream in 265 would be better compressed, right?
<KotCzarny> sure, but is decoding more than 1 stream in realtime supported/capable in allwinner ve?
<hanetzer> KotCzarny: dunno, just spinning thoughts.

<Strontium> hanetzer: yes. "HEVC/H.265 presented a bit reduction of 52% at 480p and 64% at 4K UHD when compared to H.264."
<Strontium> what it means is you can store more video on slower medium and still play it at high resolutions, with good quality.
<Strontium> or get much better quality, at the same bitrate.

<oliv3r> the kickstarter is going slowly now sadly :( it was booming at the start
<Strontium> i think it needs promoting to the SBC makers. They have a huge vested interest in seeing this happen fully.
<Strontium> Its also good publicity for their boards.
<KotCzarny> if aw invested 1cent for every soc they've produced into promoting opensource..
