<joelteon>
guys
<joelteon>
where should I host a domain
<joelteon>
I've been using iwantmyname up to now but they don't support TXT records over 255 characters long
<prophile>
does DNS support TXT records longer that?
<katlogic>
No.
<joelteon>
fuck me
* prophile
does so
<katlogic>
However some crap hosters wont allow multiple spf/txt records (workaround for really long records there)
<joelteon>
oh, you can put them in multiple records?
<katlogic>
Well, its dodgy either way.
<joelteon>
well I'm ok with putting them in multiple records
<katlogic>
Best to just write spf rules to fit 255 limit. If you cant, make sure it works even if some crap server picks up only one record out of your multiple spf.
<katlogic>
That is, no record shall contain hard deny rule.
<joelteon>
oh i'm afraid i'm a noob that just copied and pasted from the mailstache dashboard
<katlogic>
joelteon: ie never put - in there.
<katlogic>
use only ~, or maybe even not that
<joelteon>
this is a DKIM key
<joelteon>
it's long as fuck
<joelteon>
and it's just hex
<katlogic>
joelteon: dkim txts can be splitted iirc
<joelteon>
I'm finding places on google that tell me how to do this, but they all involve editing the actual zone file
<joelteon>
and I don't think iwantmyname trusts me to edit a zone file
<katlogic>
yes, it looks like ("line1" "line2")
<katlogic>
iirc powerdns and such do it all automagically
<joelteon>
and so does linode
<joelteon>
iwantmyname, however, definitely doesn't

<katlogic>
or just use 1024bit key like plebs would do :)
<joelteon>
well I'm not doing that either
<joelteon>
man, if you try to do stuff "the right way" it'll bite you in the ass a lot
<katlogic>
the right way is to vote with your wallet; not complain :)
<katlogic>
who uses plebs webhosting in this day and age of cheap clouds?
<katlogic>
as for dns; just point the domain at afraid.org or something?
eligrey has joined #elliottcable
<joelteon>
free dns huh
<katlogic>
its freemium really, * records are paid.
<katlogic>
(not associated with afraid.org, but happily using em for almost 10 years)
<joelteon>
what's a star record
<katlogic>
wildcard
<joelteon>
what does it do
<katlogic>
just what it sounds like.
<katlogic>
if you're asking this you dont need it :)
