Hi. what kind of bottleneck can I expect when using the cubieboard as a nfs/samba fileserver? Can the busses of the a20 accomodate both sata and 1Gbit ethernet saturation simultaniously?
<iggy>
quitte: I wouldn't expect to saturate gigabit with a single spinner in any case

my cubiestruck lubuntu not receive ir from remote :(

please help me

<quitte>
iggy: I would, since there is quite some ram.
<quitte>
in fact I hope that the lack of jumbo frame support my "switch" suffers from will continue to be a problem.
<iggy>
how often are you going to be serving from ram?
<quitte>
iggy: assuming serving pxeboot live systems - all the time.
<iggy>
my smallest server is a 5 disk raid10 setup and it barely ever saturates gigabit
<quitte>
iggy: how does your setup compare to a single disk connected by sata in your experience?
<zombu2>
movie server is a 40 spinner raid 10
<iggy>
and 2G of ram isn't really a ton these days
<zombu2>
nope it s not
<iggy>
the biggest issue I see on my storage boxes is metadata handling/etc
<quitte>
iggy: I was thinking I'm going to put some custom openwrt on it. Of course I'd prefer more ram - still all the ram will basically be available as a disk buffer
<zombu2>
really?
<iggy>
it's one thing to say "open this huge file and read it as fast possible"
<zombu2>
i run plex to handle all that
<iggy>
it's entirely different to handle 10k small files
<zombu2>
zfs is nice
<zombu2>
or xfs works
<quitte>
iggy: I'm aware that filesystem handling itself is an issue. however it has no influence on hardware purchase decisions
D0pamine has joined #cubieboard
<iggy>
zfs is a memory hog
<zombu2>
so?
<zombu2>
stuff ram in it
<quitte>
fuck it i'll use reiser ;)
<zombu2>
both my nas boxes have 64g
<iggy>
we're in the cubieboard channel... you can't stuff ram in it
<zombu2>
well you also can t do a raid 10 heh
<zombu2>
sw raid with lots of drives on usb gonna be really slow
<iggy>
quitte: the point I was trying to make is all the overhead in the system being what it is, worrying about bus speeds probably isn't the biggest issue you should worry about
<zombu2>
ct runs quiet good with usb ssd
RA3OR has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<quitte>
iggy: i don't agree. bus speed is exactly why i never considererd the sheeva or the pi as an option to move my spinning iron to a place where i don't mind the noise. usb just doesn't do the trick.

<iggy>
but those don't even have gigabit
<iggy>
so being limited to USB speed doesn't matter too much there

? wht we discussing

rneese: io limits of the a20. at least that is what i was hoping to discuss
<quitte>
(theoretical io limits)
<rneese>
well I am hoping my breadboard unit coms for prototyping tomorrow
<rneese>
ahh ok
<rneese>
the drawback I see on most these armboards is none have gone gigbit ehter
<rneese>
ether
<rneese>
it would be nice
<quitte>
uhm. the cubie v3 does?
<rneese>
but by fact that most internet connections are not even 100mb its useless to apoint
<rneese>
I dont like the truck
<rneese>
it needs more work
<quitte>
rneese: you do realise that local networks do exist?
<rneese>
and the need to do a cubieboard3
<rneese>
for what we are doing its all wireless
<rneese>
868MHZ
<rneese>
just starting to prototype a new railbot
<quitte>
I tried waiting for the a1100. but AMD remains silent
<quitte>
not even releasing documentation :(
<rneese>
we started with the bbblackbut not enough pwer
<rneese>
so we moved to the cubie2
<rneese>
1 finished 1 project with the cubie2
<rneese>
we made a pbx system out of it
<quitte>
868 is dect?
<rneese>
868mhz radio
<rneese>
we have transponders on the rail it sends to on the frq
