<azonenberg_hk>
Apparently lurking is legal there now
<cr1901_modern>
In NJ it is illegal to slurp your soup in public
* lain
lurks
<whitequark>
what
<cr1901_modern>
I thought azonenberg_hk was talking about stupid laws, so I mentioned another stupid law that I know
<azonenberg_hk>
cr1901_modern: I was talking about lurking specifically
<azonenberg_hk>
But yeah apparently it's no longer illegal to lurk in minneapolis
<cr1901_modern>
Oh nevermind then, just treat my quote as a non sequitir.
<qu1j0t3>
non sequiturs are underrated
<cr1901_modern>
Here's a non sequitir related to my life right now: I wish the popcorn button on the microwave worked

what happens when you push it?

Expected result: Perfectly cooked popcorn with all kernels popped and no burning
<cr1901_modern>
Reality: Nicely cooked popcorn with half the kernels unpopped

maybe it had a kernel panic

laughs more than he should
<qu1j0t3>
LOL
<qu1j0t3>
cr1901_modern: i like your bug report template. HIRED
<cr1901_modern>
Always write bug reports to the point, even if the assumptions are obvious. I model them off the Steam bug report when a malformed shell script deleted somebody's /home partition
<cr1901_modern>
Expected result: Steam launches, hard drive remains intact.
<cr1901_modern>
Actual result: Hard drive partition is deleted.

I used to joke that there should be a NetBSD microwave to complement the NetBSD toaster. Specifically optimized for microwaving popcorn by monitoring the between-pop interval. In 2016, this doesn't seem all that funny anymore.
<lain>
haha
<qu1j0t3>
cr1901_modern: nice idea
<lain>
there was a great bug report against an iOS API, lemme find it
<rqou>
nats`: I think someone already scammed us (at Gare du Nord)
<nats`>
did you buy ticket to a guy trying to sell them hand to hand ?
<rqou>
hmm the hotel seems to use 125khz RFID cards
<rqou>
too bad I don't have my reader/cloner for that
<lain>
:D
<rqou>
also only getting HSPA+ here (no LTE)
<rqou>
nats`, whitequark: is it a good time to head over to electrolab right now?
<nats`>
rqou there is LTE but I'm wondering if band are the same as in USA
<nats`>
?
<rqou>
they aren't, but my phone theoretically supports both
<rqou>
maybe it's the sim card
<rqou>
anyways, would now be a good time to go visit electrolab?
<nats`>
I never went there during the day but if it's marked as open I guess yes :)
<rqou>
it's so weird for me to see the french day of week abbreviations
<whitequark>
rqou: probably the phone
<whitequark>
double-check it
<whitequark>
bands are so nasty, and are the reason I have an xperia z2
<rqou>
usa model supposedly does: 2/3/4/5/7/12/13/17/25/26/29/30/41
<rqou>
idk what paris area ues
<rqou>
*uses
<rqou>
i'm roaming on a uk sim though, not using a french sim
<felix_>
either wrong frequency bands or more likely the sim card isn't allowed to use lte. the german sim card i have is only allowed to use gsm and umts, but not lte
<nats`>
could be the case in roaming
<nats`>
rqou if you want there are automatic vending machine selling Free Mobile Sim card
<nats`>
they are prepayed for one month and it really doesn't cost much
<whitequark>
rqou: ahhh roaming
<whitequark>
that explains
<nats`>
can become quickly intereting
<whitequark>
really get a local sim card
<whitequark>
*always* get a local sim card, though i think eu-wide one is enough
<whitequark>
i guess uk is technically still within eu
<azonenberg_hk>
For now
<azonenberg_hk>
:p
<whitequark>
well they can drag their feet indefinitely so idk
<azonenberg_hk>
Lol
<azonenberg_hk>
well the whole vote was advisory right?
<azonenberg_hk>
they're still not legally bound to bail
<nats`>
it's a point that is still being discussed :D
<whitequark>
yeah
<whitequark>
it's pretty much a constitutional crisis at this point afaiu
<whitequark>
would be pretty entertatining to watch if there was no one in UK whom i cared about
<azonenberg_hk>
Just like the US election?
<whitequark>
well, no
<azonenberg_hk>
Fun to watch the world burn from a safe distance, less fun to have it burning down around you :p
<whitequark>
the UK has only seen a small uptick in hate crimes and is unlikely to have worldwide consequences
<whitequark>
mostly it's idiots on the right screwing themselves
<whitequark>
(if we talk about leadership, I mean...)
<nats`>
funniest part is seeing politician changing their side during all of that crap :D
<whitequark>
moreover most of the folks in UK have somewhere to go, namely EU
<whitequark>
it's not really comparable to US
<azonenberg_hk>
Well if nothing else
<azonenberg_hk>
the dumpster that's on fire is much bigger :p
<whitequark>
that isnt to say that UK *isn't* on a road to a pretty authoritarian regime but bremain would not have prevented that
<whitequark>
and it's not a new development
* whitequark
shrugs
<nats`>
let's take over an island and put in place a world ruled by an IA
<nats`>
AI
<whitequark>
there's no AI, only other people's biases :p
<nats`>
let it free enough for it to decide the best answer to our problem is to erase all human :D
<azonenberg_hk>
rqou, whitequark: At RPI they had gendered wings/floors of buildings
<azonenberg_hk>
My freshman dorm was L-shaped and 3 floors
<azonenberg_hk>
The girls were all on one leg of the 3rd floor
<azonenberg_hk>
i believe there was actually a state law that mandated this to some extent, in particular i believe it was illegal for a university to house females on the ground floor
<azonenberg_hk>
presumably some concern about someone forcing their way in through a window or something
<azonenberg_hk>
The second year the dorm was a U-shaped quad, when it was built you could move freely along the whole length
<azonenberg_hk>
but for fire reasons it was partitioned off some time after it was built (this was one of the older dorms in campus, if not the oldest)
<azonenberg_hk>
it's a row-house-style construction, you can now only move freely between adjacent "stacks" and only on the third floor
<azonenberg_hk>
So first floor have separate front doors, maybe 4 rooms each
<azonenberg_hk>
2nd floor same deal
<azonenberg_hk>
3rd floor, in my case, you could move between Church V and Church IV but then there was a concrete wall separating you from Church III
<azonenberg_hk>
(the quad was more than Church, it was about five or six named chunks side by side)
<azonenberg_hk>
Anyway, from what i remember the 3rd floor was primarily female but there were two male rooms, mine included, at one end
<azonenberg_hk>
1/2 were entirely male
<azonenberg_hk>
(of my stacks at least, dont know about the rest)
