<shadeslayer> mripard: ping
<shadeslayer> mripard: I was reading the discussion about using one of the overlay planes on A64 as a cursor plane
<shadeslayer> from what I understand, that seems to be a acceptable thing?
<shadeslayer> I also see patches to the tegra driver behaving the same way
<shadeslayer> so could we just allocate one of the planes as a cursor plane?
<jernej> shadeslayer: I think that userspace apps treat cursor and overlay plane differently
<jernej> since on some hw cursor planes are very limited
<shadeslayer> jernej: sure, but it seems like it's a acceptable practice to indicate that one of the overlay planes is a cursor plane
<jernej> I know the thread
<jernej> you can't do that on mixer1, since it has one video layer (as overlay plane) and one ui layer (as primary plane)
nuuuciano has joined #linux-sunxi
<shadeslayer> oh? huh, I wonder why KWin reports 6 planes then
<jernej> this would mean that on A64, hdmi output will be still limited to sw rendering, since it uses mixer1 and mixer switching is not implemented
<shadeslayer> ah ok
<jernej> usually, mixer0 -> 1 video plane and 3 ui planes, one of them is primary
<jernej> mixer1 -> 1 video plane and 1 ui plane (primary)
<shadeslayer> ahhhhh right ok
<jernej> which HW do you have in mind?
<shadeslayer> jernej: on the pinebook
<jernej> so LCD on pinebook uses mixer0
<shadeslayer> we're trying to figure out how to get HWCursor working on KWin Wayland
<shadeslayer> jernej: right
<shadeslayer> one of the ideas was to elevate the plane in the driver, the other idea was to elevate it in the compositor
<jernej> well, KWin could also take one overlay plane for cursor, right?
rexxster has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<shadeslayer> jernej: right, we were discussing this, and just trying to figure out a way to do this sensibly
bshah has joined #linux-sunxi
<shadeslayer> jernej: what's the difference between a channel and a mixer?
<jernej> yeah, I know the issue. I had discussion with LibreELEC guys how to detect appropriate video plane and ui plane inside Kodi
<jernej> different SoC vendors, different capabilities and limitations
<shadeslayer> because docs say : 4 layers in each channel
<shadeslayer> but that there are 4 channels for main display and 2 channels for aux
<jernej> shadeslayer: mixer is a composer, which creates final image and gives it to LCD controller
<jernej> inside mixer0, for example, are 1 vi channel and 3 ui channels
<shadeslayer> *nod*
<jernej> vi channel can accept YUV & RGB planes
<jernej> but ignores alpha values
<jernej> ui planes can accept only RGB, but knows how to deal with alpha channel
<jernej> all channels usually have scaler capability
<jernej> and then, channels are subdivided to 4 layers
<jernej> but currently, that is not exposed to DRM driver
<shadeslayer> I see
<jernej> because scaler unit can work only on whole channel, not layer
<jernej> and additionally, even UI channels can't blend layers based on alpha channel
<jernej> and zpos property can be set only on channel, not layer
<jernej> because of those limitations, only one layer is active in each channel
<shadeslayer> ah that makes a lot of sense
<jernej> otherwise would be imposible to use very useful features (scaling, blending, zpos)
<shadeslayer> ok, the whole channel/layer situation is a lot more clear to us now
elros has joined #linux-sunxi
<jernej> btw, zpos is not implemented yet, but I have plan to do that
<shadeslayer> ah damn, so we can't really do this at a compositor level anyway then
<jernej> you can, take plane which is atop of primary
<jernej> on mixer0, it goes this way, overlay (video) - primary - overlay - overlay (topmost)
<jernej> video overlay is at bottom
<jernej> and fixed zpos property is also exposed
<jernej> it's just fixed
lurchi__ is now known as lurchi_
<shadeslayer> jernej: got a link ?
<jernej> for what?
<shadeslayer> for that zpos fixed property patch
<jernej> it's in 4.16 already
<shadeslayer> ahhh
<shadeslayer> I'm on anarsoul's branch
<jernej> which is?
<jernej> let me check
<shadeslayer> jernej: https://github.com/anarsoul/linux-2.6, 4.16
<shadeslayer> RC I think
<shadeslayer> cheers :)

<jernej> wens: I think there is a bug in u-boot regarding generating mac address and handing over to linux if u-boot has no emac driver enabled
<jernej> sunxi board.c generates it here: http://git.denx.de/?p=u-boot.git;a=blob;f=board/sunxi/board.c;h=322dd9e23ac379f66b123ddb049d576c52731fc3;hb=HEAD#l760
<jernej> which is just a bit too late: http://git.denx.de/?p=u-boot.git;a=blob;f=common/image-fdt.c;h=3dc02a12191d515fc19e10ba3abfe8c55633d234;hb=HEAD#l486
<wens> jernej: fdt_fixup_ethernet is also called again in the bootm/bootz path
<pgreco> wens, I'm using fedora latest uboot, 2018.05rc2, I remember it working on older versions
<wens> jernej: ugh, scratch that
<jernej> I think that is a regression after some reworks
<pgreco> wens, same thing happens testing your gmac patch for r40 (bananapi-m2)
<wens> it was changed a year ago in commits 3f66149d9fb4 and 26d61195f870
<wens> pgreco: the kernel itself does not try to generate stable MAC addresses
<wens> pgreco: if none were provided, it will generate random ones
<jernej> afk
<wens> we are relying on U-boot to generate one from the SID, and put it in the dtb
<pgreco> wens, it is exactly that
<pgreco> wens, yes, I remember talking about that with montjoie, when we were testing ethernet for the a83t
<pgreco> he said about the alias in the dtb
<wens> yes
<pgreco> but now, if it is actually uboot failing
<wens> the code looks for the ethernet aliases first, then assigns the mac per listed alias
<pgreco> any idea which version should I use
<pgreco> ?
<pgreco> the alias was the first thing I looked
<wens> last I checked EMAC was not enabled for any A83T boards in U-boot
<wens> and so it won't do anything
<pgreco> will check
<wens> jernej: right, so fdt_fixup_ethernet is called by image_setup_libfdt, which in turn is called by image_setup_linux, which is called in the bootm/bootz path
<icenowy[m]> wens: I pushed a patch for it
<icenowy[m]> mripard refused and says that the U-Boot DT should be patched instead
<wens> icenowy[m]: indeed it should

<pgreco> wens, but the code in uboot is already there, so adding CONFIG_SUN8I_EMAC=y to the board config should work?
<pgreco> or am I missing something?

<wens> though I think we should just make it generate mac addresses anyway

<pgreco> wens, just checked that uboot also doesn't have the ethernet node, like this https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/arch/arm/boot/dts/sun8i-a83t.dtsi?h=v4.17-rc1#n836
<pgreco> so unless all I have to do is copy that block and the alias to uboot, i dont have the knowledge to do that
