Hi, my name is Stuart. I'm trying to get sunxi linux to work on an Allwinner device I have recently purchased. It's an A20. I've started following your tutorial on new devices, and I'm trying find the information...
<sety>
however when I try to issue ./sunxi-fel read 0x42400000 0x82d0 boot1.header the device crashes and I get usb_bulk_send() ERROR -7: Operation timed out
<sety>
./sunxi-fel version works
<sety>
after it crashes I have to power cycle the device to communicate with it again. Any ideas?
<sety>
I've started on the wiki for my device as instructed in your tutorial. It's my first wiki so it'll be a little slow. :)

sety: hi Stuart. (i wouldn't recommend telling people that part) one thing that held me back at first was that there are two main firmware branches; a legacy one which only supports old kernels but is also the one commercial stuff uses typically, and a second, updated one that can work with 4.x kernels but has ... somewhat less mature hardware support
<gnarface>
damn, too slow
<gnarface>
poor guy
<gnarface>
it's gonna take him weeks to figure that out because none of the documentation for one mentions the existance of the other
<diego71>
gnarface: it's a wiki, you can fix it :)
<KotCzarny>
+1
<KotCzarny>
also, for me fel troubles were because i've tried to use it from vm
<KotCzarny>
after running on host machine it magically started working
<gnarface>
most my problems were just from trying to use memory addresses from the legacy uboot documentation with the newer mainline uboot
<gnarface>
once someone told me they're not the same thing it was much easier to figure out what documentation should have been looking for
<KotCzarny>
the only time one has to use legacy uboot is when there is need for supporting nand for android
<gnarface>
it's just what my device shipped with so i didn't know any better
<gnarface>
(the ubuntu install on the pinebooks)

Hello.
<DeVance>
I apologise for repeating my question from 25 March, but I want to know if anybody have a firmware for Q7S-V2.0, Allwinner A31s based motherboard?
<DeVance>
I flashed wrong recovery and my tablet turned into brick.

Ahh cool. I'm trying to get some info on a new device I just got. It's not in the wiki, so I'm following the new device instructions, which involves making a wiki... I've never done this before. Any guidence would be very much appreciated.
<sety>
When plugged in to usb in FEL mode it assumes the identity of an Onda v972 tablet.
<sety>
I can get the FEL version, but when I try to read the suggested memory areas it crashes and I need to power cycle it to talk to it again. I've tried communicating with using several different computers and operating systems and the result is always the same.
<sety>
I can get a serial console but it's too fast for me to interrupt ubooot and I don't know the root password.

KotCzarny: in uboot it uses clock_sun6i.h and not clock_sun8i_a83t.h. That's probably because the sun6i is a better fit. But there are some pitfalls when using a R/V40, e.g. the GMAC addresses are different. A #ifdef... could fix it but there might be quite a few and I hesitate to call it CONFIG_SUNXI_R40
<f11f12>
Hmm, there's a CONFIG_MACH_SUN8I_R40 in there already. I'll use that.

wasutton3_mobile, have you tuned rx/tx delay for the RGMII?
<BenG83>
are the config pull-up/down resistors populated?
<BenG83>
for the fixed 2ns RGMII delays
<wasutton3_mobile>
idk about tuned rx/tx delay
<wasutton3_mobile>
but the pullup/down resistors are populated
<BenG83>
you need 2ns delay between clock and data for the sampling to work on RGMII
xyntrix has joined #linux-sunxi

yes, i should have the rx/tx delay enabled (had to check my schematic)

it was working with my ubiquiti PoE injector as well as my powerdsine midspan
<BenG83>
does ethtool work?
<BenG83>
to talk to the phy?
<BenG83>
if it doesnt, add allwinner,tx-delay-ps = <500>; allwinner,rx-delay-ps = <500>; to your gmac node
<BenG83>
delays go in 100ps steps
<wasutton3_mobile>
ill try ethtool, im trying a reflash of the OS first

what's funny, bringing cores online didnt change temperature (at least in idle)

o.O
<KotCzarny>
megi: you have cpufreq /sys node populated?
<megi>
yes
<KotCzarny>
hrm.
<megi>
cpufreq works for me normally
<KotCzarny>
what's even more funny on another opipc with same uboot/kernel i have both psci and cpufreq. huh
<megi>
i'll check my farmville
<megi>
looks like I have it on all my 9 boards
<KotCzarny>
i have in dmesg on nonworking one:

+ sy8106a 1-0065: Failed to read voltage at probe time: -6
<KotCzarny>
- thermal thermal_zone0: failed to read out thermal zone (-16)
<megi>
hmm, sy8106a looks like the culprit

so, stuck i2c?

thermal zone error is fine

yes

darn. i2c is bane of my life

:) though I'd be worried a bit, sy8106a can produce higher voltage than CPU can take and if I2C is not reliable on that board...

at worst i will be without internet at home for a while
<willmore>
Do the voltage registers have a load then latch type of functionality?
<KotCzarny>
willmore: for some reason sy8106a on oranges is sticky
<willmore>
That way you could write the new value, then read it back, make sure the write and read succeded and then do the latch.
<KotCzarny>
at least until full power cycle
<KotCzarny>
funny thing it's 0.5-0.7C cooler now
<megi>
willmore: no
<megi>
it has a go bit, but if it is not set, the regulator will revert to a default value set by external resistors
<willmore>
Darn.
<willmore>
Guess you better make sure that bus isn't glitchy. :(
<KotCzarny>
hmm

it should be possible to test reliability by writing random values to the value register (keeping the go bit unset) and reading them back, but it would be a bit of a russian rulette, but with rather good odds :D smoke would require both high voltage value and a go bit flipping by accident
