new to ipfs in general, and have read quite a bit more with the recent cloudflare gateway announcement. I'm just digging around blogs - https://macwright.org/2019/06/08/ipfs-again.html says (recently) its still not easy to host a website... is that a correct assessment?
<jayjo>
article makes good points but comes off as nitpicking, he complains that installation is difficult because mac os x is referred to as 'darwin', 'os x', and 'mac os x' in different places

<D_>
I have a similar setup and it mostly works
<D_>
I have the devices on LAN added as bootstrap peers to config so they always know about each other
<D_>
It's still not the smoothest experience, since I don't have a cluster or anything to automate the pin synchronization

jayjo: I think the article is accurate in terms of one user's experience. IPFS still has some rough edges. But I also think the article isn't really comparing apples with apples. IPFS is a very low-level protocol layer, not a website-hosting tool. It would be equally hard to setup a website if you had to setup your own server and host yourself using existing web2 tools...
rkzel has joined #ipfs
<carsonfarmer[m]>
What's missing in the website hosting space is a user-friendly website deployment tool. There are some out there, and the Permaweb.io folks are working on something pretty sweet already. There is also ipfs-deploy (don't have a link handy right now... sorry) to help in that area.

If you don't pin content is there a very high likelihood your data will not be available in the future, or is it more a guarantee? It makes sense that you would need to ensure data is retained at least somewhere (probably the node you manage) if you really need the data to stick around - but is it the case that the network will generally not hold all content forever?

Say I host my static website on IPFS. How can I share dependencies with other websites on the network, and utilize webpack at the same time?
<jayjo>
Kubuxu: how does it work practically? When I initially add content is there any attempt to store it elsewhere, or is it just broadcasted to other nodes that it's available, and will only be stored on other nodes when its requested from them?
<Kubuxu>
The last one, only when requested. Pushing out content to other nodes is very tricky due to legal reasons.
