When using `ipfs add --only-hash`, is there any way to leverage this generated object to store on disk, without needing to repeat an `ipfs add`?
<postables[m]>
For example, lets say I want to check if a file has already been added to my IPFS node, I can run `ipfs add --only-hash` and check the hash that is returned to see if it is being pinned by my node. In the event that it isn't pinned, is there anyway I can leverage the object that was generated by `ipfs add --only-hash` to prevent having to rebuild the entire object again?

Feel somewhat conflicted about that. On one hand censorship is bad, but on the other hand being a racist, shitty human being and having easy access to proliferate your shitty ideaologies that are harmful towards others isn't a good thing either.
<postables[m]3>
It's like how the anti-vaxx movement has become massive due to disinformation shared through facebook, which leads to things like measles being a thing in north america. Everyone has the right to freespeech, but at some point you need to draw a line where your freespeech to say shitty things and act like a shitty person starts to cause genuine harm to others

it's a potentially slippery slope though. This could easily go from stopping the spread of genuine toxic content to just censoring content because it doesn't agree with your opinion or beliefs. definitely needs some sort of checks and balances system, which unfortunately it doesn't sound like they have

Re the de-googling: there’s another component that is troubling. This was instigated by Vox ($1B valuation w/Comcast and NBCUniversal as majority shareholders) shrieking for Youtube to deplatform Crowder who is competition for their Strikethrough series. The updated YouTube policies will favor “authorities” whatever that means. The concern here is that the policies will be applied unevenly between independents and the
<catman[m]>
institutions that pay ad dollars and applied in cases with digital outrage mobs.

For me the issue is there’s a relationship between media companies and advertisers that can exert strong editorial influence. Ryan Holiday describes this in “Trust Me I’m Lying” (2012) as a media buyer dealing with Gawker etc. I think it’s a trend that’s continuing and poses particular problems for the question determining whether platform or publisher and the regulatory rules they’ll then need to follow.

I actually think IPFS’s content addressing provides a pathway to deal with this problem without having to resort to editorializing. If content has permalinks, then it follows that relationships between content can have easily tracked permalinks. Should make it easier to track related items debunking bad info

hello! does anybody know why ipfs has not filed any patents for its design? I am not a specialist in patent law, but does a publication of a whitepaper protect a project from someone else patenting its design and then suing you?
<gunni>
wouldn't prior art cover that? it's provably existed for a while online
<cloudcell>
or if I publish my code on github that automatically protects me from anybody patenting my design and then suing me?
<jadedctrl>
it doesn't guarantee that someone won't try, but they won't really have ground to stand on
