<sandah> Is it better to install sandstorm from a root account or an account with sudo?
<asheesh> It doesn't matter, so I usually do the latter.
<sandah> Thanks
<asheesh> install.sh knows how to use sudo to switch to root.
<asheesh> And I like running things as non-root.
<asheesh> Sure thing, sandah !

<sandah> Ah

<asheesh> I guess we should give you a better error message for that.
<asheesh> How did you end up in this situation?
<asheesh> Maybe install.sh failed to insist on http:// ?
<asheesh> If so it's very easy for me to fix install.sh to be more insistent.
<asheesh> Man, I wonder how many bajillion people run into this problem.
<sandah> I'm in thanks
<asheesh> sandah: You are very welcome. If we had validated data more aggressively in install.sh, would that have saved you from this problem?

<kentonv> Thej: hi
<TheJ> Hi Kenton! I'm still trying to sort out my config. I'm at my machine this time too
<TheJ> fresh sandstorm install...
wolcen has joined #sandstorm
<TheJ> I setup a snadcats.io name too
<TheJ> when I create a new admin token, I get a 404 error.
<TheJ> now...
<TheJ> I have changed teh config by 1) remoning the HTTPS and 2) changed port 80 to port 6080
<TheJ> I have another server on my network that uses port 80 and 443
<TheJ> any thoughts?
<kentonv> first, you can still use HTTPS on a port other than 443. I would of course recommend sticking with https.
<kentonv> if you want to be on port 443, you'd need to set up sniproxy somewhere to distinguish between your two servers based on the request and forward appropriately
<kentonv> but it also works to use a different port
<TheJ> ok. I can re-add it as say 444.
<kentonv> yeah, then you'd do https://example.sandcats.io:444 to access it
<kentonv> you'll need to set BASE_URL and WILDCARD_HOST to include the :444
<TheJ> like so. HTTPS_PORT=444
<kentonv> yep
<TheJ> oh ok. just ad ":444" at the end
<TheJ> I will need to open port 444 onmy router too
<kentonv> yes
<TheJ> sweet!! I'm at the admin page !!
<kentonv> hooray!
<TheJ> I've been assessing what apps I wanted on snadstorm and would love to see a bookmarking app. has anyone else "desired" this?
<kentonv> yes, I believe Asheesh wanted to port a bookmarking app way back even before our indiegogo campaign years ago
<kentonv> but I don't think it has happened yet. :/
<kentonv> maybe you'd like to write one? :)
<kentonv> (or package an existing one)
<kentonv> (but it'd be super-easy to write!)
<TheJ> ...for a developer ;-)
<kentonv> it could be a pretty good intro coding project. :)
<TheJ> I've been looking for one I liked so that I could petition the devs to move it over to sandstorm

<zarvox> I'm pretty excited about https://github.com/sandstorm-io/sandstorm/pull/1520 . I figure we can probably get the rest of the packages brought into JSCS compliance by the time Meteor 1.3 is out, and then we can start using ES6 modules, which will let us stop relying on global functions, which will in turn let us use ESlint effectively to warn about scoping/audit for needlessly-global things.

<asheesh> Hi cstrahan !

<asheesh> I just saw your Tweets. Exciting.
<asheesh> I believe maurer is also a nixos user, and paroneayea is an avid guix user.
<asheesh> In theory I'm a Debian developers, which is why vagrant-spk works the way it does.
<maurer> I'm a nixos user and what is this?
<asheesh> TL;DR: cstrahan is a nix user and likes Sandstorm
<asheesh> I think cstrahan was also interested in seeing a nix package for Sandstorm.
<maurer> Ah, yeah. A sandstorm nix package is probably still hard
<asheesh> And that reminded me of poor maurer 's woes getting ekam going.
<maurer> but I do have spk packaged
<maurer> At some point, when I get some free time, I wanted to try making a thing to translate built nix packages into spks
<cstrahan> Yeah, I had some difficulty trying to get ekam packaged. Hopefully can get that figured out.
<maurer> with the logic being that a nix package already knows its dpendency closure
<asheesh> I want that, too, given that poor synchrone had so many problems with vagrant-spk and Python.
<zarvox> maurer: oh! that should be relatively straightforward - a nix package already includes all of its transitive dependencies, right?
<maurer> zarvox: Yes
<maurer> zarvox: that's why it seemed like a cool idea
<maurer> cstrahan: is as far as I got
joshbuddy has quit [Quit: joshbuddy]
<maurer> cstrahan: It breaks several packaging rules (since it pulls in multiple other packages) and can't touch any of the meteor stuff
<maurer> but it may get you over some of the earlier hurdles
<cstrahan> maurer: cool - thanks!
<cstrahan> maurer: does the package build successfully?
<maurer> cstrahan: That .nix file builds
<maurer> cstrahan: It does not build the sandstorm frontend
<maurer> only the spk binary
<asheesh> simonv3: https://www.hylo.com/p/13616 are you possibly interested in working with this person to make their "little index of what tools my community uses" app packaged on Sandstorm?
<asheesh> I feel a little like a broken record and I think someone who's *not* me saying so would come off as more authentic.
<asheesh> The thing looks pretty cool, like "the world's smallest okta, for communities".
<asheesh> It's a neat way to organize a community's list of SaaS (or Sandstorm grain) apps.
<asheesh> Leaving aside the SSO aspect called "Once".

<asheesh> Howdy canuky
<canuky> Hey asheesh
<asheesh> There isn't, I believe.
<canuky> OK, going to run through the existing apps and make a shortlist ... have fielded that question from a few educators this week
<asheesh> That's great.
joshbuddy has joined #sandstorm
<canuky> asheesh will be contacting you sometime next week with a few vagrank-spk questions
<asheesh> Great. I will be super happy to answer.
<canuky> Working on a https://getgrav.org/ SPK and ran into a few snags
<asheesh> (That's great) + (I'm sorry for your woes!)
<asheesh> & I'd like to fix them.
<canuky> Been fun - learning lots
<asheesh> Awesome! I'm so glad to hear that!
<asheesh> I can never really tell what is going to be fun for other people.
<asheesh> I suppose this'll be getgrav + the admin UI, since there's not clearly a way to sync files to Grav (?)
<asheesh> You could go nuts and bundle it with a git web UI, though.
<asheesh> Or you could wait for us to have inter-app communication, which is "coming reall soon" but that's weeks/months not hours.
<asheesh> So to some extent, it depends on your deadline.
neynah has joined #sandstorm

<maurer> asheesh: Oh yeah, btw re: the nix + spk, it'd probably make more sense to hook nix up directly to spk than to vagrant-spk, unless I've misunderstood something
<asheesh> The only downside to that is for non-Linux users, I was thinking.
<asheesh> But yeah, if you really don't need cross-platform, then nix+spk is a pretty solid combination.
<asheesh> I'd probably end up merging some variant of it into vagrant-spk so non-Linux users can enjoy it, and then make vagrant-spk be willing to drop the 'vagrant' part of you're already on Linux.
<asheesh> I think doing it this way (nix + spk) is smarter than doing (nix + vagrant-spk) first, because IMHO you don't want to be bound to any vagrant-spk design decisions first, and then you could make something you could distribute without me/zarvox (vagrant-spk maintainers) having to approve/merge your work.
<asheesh> </worlds-longest-way-to-say-yes>

<simonv3> hey, got some packaging woes that I’m not sure where to go and fix
<asheesh> tell me more
<simonv3> I run vagrant-spk up and it spits out: https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/y7Xv4D7n/vagrant%20error
<simonv3> So I take a look at VirtualBox and it tells me the annotate vm is “Aborted”. When I try to start it via VirtualBox it prints out:
<asheesh> Er, ouch.
<simonv3> so, dunno if I got myself in this error and should just do a clean restart (not really a problem) or whether there’s a “what to do now” situation
<asheesh> Can you run the VirtualBox GUI and see what things look like?
<simonv3> That’s from the GUI
<simonv3> (unless there’s another GUI that I don’t know about)
<asheesh> Well that's distressing. I have no real advice for you except rebooting.
<asheesh> Googling it results in people sometimes complaining about Windows Update.
<simonv3> Oh hmm, I wonder if this is because I updated to El Capitan yesterday
<asheesh> Are other VirtualBox VMs running OK?
<asheesh> Yeah, in that case, you might need to update/reinstall VirtualBox.
<simonv3> womp womp
<simonv3> Had to upgrade to install iA writer, ended up not installing iA writer, dealing with all the programming fallout that is parse for the course with an OS X update :(
