Recommendation please for a 5inch, maybe 6inch max, 4inch min colour screen that's actually usable in direct summer sunlight for the cubieboard?
<Lumocolor>
oh and what about resolutions?
<Turl>
Lumocolor: something with color eink?
<Turl>
direct summer sunlight usability is hard for even high end displays
<Lumocolor>
why not? needs to be usable in the dark too = backlight option
<Turl>
phones are the perfect example of direct sunlight usage
<Turl>
and yet their performance is far from stellar under bright sun
<Lumocolor>
I was wondering if there was something kind-a like PixelQi but smaller. In lcd lists I seen there is a sunlight-readable option
<Lumocolor>
phone level will do
<Lumocolor>
high contrast theme to make it more usable
<Turl>
eink can have backlight btw - see eg kindle paperwhite or the nook/kobo counterparts
<Lumocolor>
also needs to be good enough for video
<Lumocolor>
thought so
<Lumocolor>
I know there where colour e-link displays that could do 30fps video
deasy has quit [Quit: Nom d'un quark, c'est Edmonton !]
<Lumocolor>
but I also need the display suported in the software stack. I can't write any display related code. plug and play for me
<Turl>
one of those mini hdmi monitors then?
payne has joined #linux-sunxi
<Lumocolor>
there too big and costly. I can wire up a display to the lcd <interface type of cubieboard>
<Lumocolor>
this is for a diy pocket computer, admittedly a bulky pocket computer
<Lumocolor>
it comes down to what ever I can get that is the right size (range) but the brighter the better (or even better any technology that helps it to be readable in sunlight/daytime)
<Lumocolor>
so maybe not direct sunlight...

Lumocolor: maybe you can look into the lcd selection on olimex's site then

Turl: I believe there where no 5inch ones just 7 and 10.
<Lumocolor>
Turl: thanks, thats a nice kit. I do want a touch screen but relly 5inch is preferable as the you get double the height 480 instead of 272 and I think it would fit better with a cubieboard or eoma-68 behind it.

has anyone successfully used the A20 MPEG decoder ?
<TuxboxGuru>
the CedarX blobs etc etc seem to be the achilies heel
<ssvb>
TuxboxGuru: I think the A20 CPU is fast enough to handle MPEG2 decoding in software
<TuxboxGuru>
ssvb: it is, but startup is laggy ...
<ssvb>
TuxboxGuru: what kind of media player do you use for video playback?
<TuxboxGuru>
ssvb: looking at the vdpau now ... almost no examples how to code for for it
<TuxboxGuru>
I was using mplayer... but want to code a player myself (integrated in to my app)

hello everybody. I'd like to ask if drivers are ready for use with XBMC. On http://www.linux-sunxi.org/XBMC it says that development is in progress. Just wanted to get a status report. Is it ready or not, and if so can we say how long about it should take or isn't that clear?
<rellla>
can0pus: not ready
<can0pus>
rellla: thanks for feedback. Do you know maybe any ETA ?
<ssvb>
can0pus: the drivers are mostly ready, but XBMC itself is not
<rellla>
no. because afaik nobody is working on xbmc integration atm.
<ssvb>
can0pus: right now you can use mplayer instead of XBMC if you want hardware accelerated video playback ;-)
<ssvb>
can0pus: nowadays we have working open source reverse engineered drivers for hardware video decoding, but the XBMC issue is for most part seems to be a political one
<ssvb>
can0pus: so you have the following options: a) forget about XBMC and use other video players b) fix XBMC yourself c) convince XBMC developers to cooperate :)
* rellla
suggests can0pus to go for b) :p
<Wizzup>
Slightly OT question - would you guys recommend a certain tablet with sunxi hw?
<Wizzup>
Looking through the buying guide / list of tablets...
<wens>
depends on your requirements and intended purpose?
<Wizzup>
I don't know. It doesn't need to be super expensive. Will hack on it and run gnu/linux, maybe carry it around and run gentoo on it.
<Wizzup>
Mostly I want something that is not too hard to buy, I think.
<wens>
you can find pretty much anything on aliexpress, so I don't think availability would be a problem
<wens>
for running linux, I'd suggest the older SoC's
<wens>
AFAIK no one has A23 running linux on MMC yet
<Wizzup>
I was looking at A10 and A20
<wens>
and I'm not sure we have a legacy kernel for A31
<Wizzup>
I just don't recognise any of the companies - that's how I usually start
<Wizzup>
To have like ... somewhat of an idea of what the quality will be like :)
<Wizzup>
I found some 7" tablets but they have the same resolution as my n900 phone, which was kind of funny
<Wizzup>
wens: so far the primo seems cheaper than the a10 I linked

TuxboxGuru: no. only if you want to do that media stuff imo. sunxi is not only a target for XBMC on linux. though in allwinners marketing strategy it seems to be it for android.
<TuxboxGuru>
thats what I said :D .... Android Multimedia is nice... Linux Multimedia is non-existent.
<rellla>
*nearly
<rellla>
but very on the way!
<can0pus>
rellla: oh ok, I see. So it does not depend on the source, but on the video I am looking at. Well, I think the Cubietruck is not worth to investigate more time in. Unfortunately I am not a geek to investigate in compiling,trying, etc... well, as this project is buggy because no hw acceleration is available I won't give any try on XBMC on Cubietruck. Thanks for all these information
<ssvb>
TuxboxGuru: libvdpau-sunxi works quite nicely, so "non-existent" does not qualify
<ssvb>
can0pus: just buy a Raspberry Pi and be happy ;-)
<ssvb>
can0pus: it is also quite a bit cheaper, so must be a no-brainer choice for you
<ssvb>
rellla: does XBMC work fine in Android on A10/A20? if yes, then the wiki page should probably recommend it to the people, who want to use their sunxi device as a single purpose XBMC gadget

ssvb: don't know. i never tried that. maybe a start would be the vidon.me build, which was recently updated. that's targeted on A10 and A31 running android. but there are some obvious precompiled dll .so files. i was readelf'ing a bit to what's inside. i think they are compareable to the .so files we build ourselves and the closed source blob. vidon.me just wraps around them. https://github.com/vidonme/xbmc
<rellla>
but as said, i don't think, it's worth to start hacking on that again.
<can0pus>
ssvb: I own four of them ;) but RPi + XBMC was a pain in the ass. Only XBMC Gotham works better on RPi now because they fixed and enhanced some stuff. But unfortunately the RPi still is not strong enough in menu browsing and stuff like that. When the video is playing there's no problem, but browsing through internet content is really a pain in the ass :S

Hi, is it possible to enhance android's 2D performance by changing MALI driver ?
<libv>
vector80: no.
npcomp has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
paulk-collins has joined #linux-sunxi
<vector80>
libv: Thank you very much. Is there a way to enhance it by some other way ?
<libv>
vector80: not that i know of, android should already be making full use of overlays.
<libv>
but i have absolutely no clue about the allwinner port(s) of android.
<vector80>
Alright, here is my test result, let me explain why I asked this
<vector80>
I have two products, with 10.1"LCD
<vector80>
I am running same APK on both of them
<torindel>
libv: well they're shipping devices with apple a7 already, like i said apple doesnt produce anything themselfs and wikipedia says samsung is manufacturer too
<vector80>
Only difference between two is,
<vector80>
One of them is using AMLOGIC AML8726-MX, and the other one is A20
<vector80>
Both CPU are running at 1.2Ghz
<vector80>
Both of them are in performance governor
<vector80>
both of them have 2x512 DDR3
<vector80>
AMLOGIC is drawing fullscren grid twice faster than A20
<vector80>
As far as I know, both of those CPU have MALI400-MP2
<torindel>
mali is used for 3d not 2d
<vector80>
Who is drawing to Framebuffer then ?
<libv>
vector80: what fullscreen grid?
<libv>
is a20 really running at 1.2GHz?
<libv>
what is the memory bandwidth like on both devices?
<vector80>
GridView is an android display structure
<libv>
you do know that the amlogic is an A9 and that the allwinner is an A7?
<vector80>
My A20 cpufre_cur_freq is 1200000
<vector80>
Amlogic is also same
<vector80>
A9 faster than A7 ?
<libv>
"The ARM website states that A7 has 1.9 DMIPS/MHz/CPU whereas A9 has 2.5."
<vector80>
I heard the inverse, am I wrong ?
<vector80>
oh my god
<libv>
A7 is more featureful.
<vector80>
waww
<vector80>
very good information
<libv>
but it is low-end of the A7, A12 and A15 family
<vector80>
what are those extras for A7 ?
<libv>
A9 was high end.
<libv>
vector80: check wikipedia.
<vector80>
ok
<vector80>
So, A20 lost against the AMlogic,
<vector80>
and there is nothing can be done for this?
<libv>
they are a different generation.
<libv>
you will see different power usage between them
<vector80>
I checked that also
<vector80>
When decoding full HD movide from youtube
<libv>
how could you have missed the A7 vs A9 thing btw?
<vector80>
they both use around 12V and approximately 1050mA
<libv>
vector80: at peak, perhaps.
<vector80>
yes, at peak
<vector80>
Ok, very clear information
<vector80>
thank you very much for this.
<libv>
vector80: also check the memory bandwidth difference between the two devices
<libv>
how the cache is used, etc
<vector80>
a10-meminfo-static says mine is 432Mhz clock
<vector80>
but how to check that on amlogic...
<libv>
bandwidth != clock
<vector80>
so how to check the badwidth ?
npcomp has joined #linux-sunxi
<vector80>
bandwidth
<libv>
bandwidth = clock, width of bus, cas/ras timing (in the olden pc days)
<libv>
ssvb and jemk are the experts on allwinner on that.
<vector80>
yes, last night ssvb helped me a lot on that
<vector80>
My current A20 gets around 9000 on antutu4.3.3
<vector80>
and amlogic gets around 10500
<vector80>
So, all is realte to architectural difference
<vector80>
I though A7 was better
<libv>
it is
<libv>
in several respects.
<libv>
but not in raw processing power.
<vector80>
but when it comes to something real, it is very clear that A9 is better to draw
<vector80>
I am digging wiki to understand the difference
<libv>
vector80: in some tests.
<libv>
vector80: i am sure that the picture is not 100% A9 is better
<vector80>
Well, these products are used for home automation
<vector80>
one of them is Interra-3
<libv>
it could be that 100% this amlogic soc is better than the a20
<vector80>
I could wrote some basic info about it to wiki
<libv>
but that's not only down to the A9 vs A7 core
<vector80>
I understand your meaning
<vector80>
This typical CPU could be better, but doesn't mean all
<vector80>
Such as, A31 is also A7, but it is better than Amlogic
<libv>
i think a31 is clocked higher, has bigger memory bandwidth, has more/different caches, etc
mmarker has joined #linux-sunxi
<vector80>
yes, I meant that
<libv>
blaming the mali (a 3d engine) for the slowness of a single test that might not even use GL, is very very shortsighted
<vector80>
yes, of course you are right
<vector80>
I just wonder,
<vector80>
if MALI is 3D engine
<vector80>
then who is drawing 2D on fb0 ?
<torindel>
vector80: android is doing that itself directly to fb0, it should use g2d for help too
<torindel>
so its either direct fb mem access or toying via g2d for 2d graphics
<vector80>
torindel: thank you, but now I understand, it is nothing to do with drivers,
<vector80>
my apps needs pure processing power
<vector80>
just draw some 2D graphics on screen
<vector80>
and do some backgroud work
<vector80>
at this point, unfortunately, Amlogic is definitely much faster, almost twice
<torindel>
vector80: and if you want more computing power get something with a7+a15 ^^

Dumb question. CedarX - can it be used to encode h264 on a A20? Is it worth trying? Or is cedarx more for decoding. Little confused from reading the wiki.
<libv>
wigyori: all those two pcdiuno pages really need is a u-boot patch, a .fex file submitted and the FEL buttons figured out
<hramrach>
it should encode but quality of drivers may be questionable
<hramrach>
not sure about exact current status
shineworld has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<mmarker>
hramrach: that's where the wiki got me a touch confused. Clearly the non-blob code there is no encoding. Blob is a bit more "its there" but no comment on if and how it works.
<Turl>
mmarker: check the mailing list and talk with the people there
<Turl>
there was something using the blobs to encode I think
<mmarker>
Turl: oh. OK.
<hramrach>
an example piece of code which was challenging to get working
