with the cubieboard, Can I have debian install with only free software packages installed, no non-free drivers, firmware fat blobs?
<mmarker>
A10? It's Mali if I recall. I think the biggest thing you lose is the hw codec acceleration. But even that has a open source project around it - check the wiki.
<mmarker>
But I'm somewhat new to sunxi. Others here can tell me if I'm full of it.

I'm battling with an Android image which has the mount points all wrong. If you try and install any app that needs additional storage, it can't use the SD card. That mount might be mapped to SATA, I haven't checked that yet, but you'd think SD would be default...
<TuxboxGuru>
You would think that... but its not the case - some apps have the 'Use External' flag in the manifest .. those have external storage enabled
<TuxboxGuru>
I think there is a mod to the Android system to default the install to external devices
<TuxboxGuru>
(Android not my flavour... just quoting some experiences)
<megal0maniac_afk>
TuxboxGuru: There is, but it doesn't work here
<megal0maniac_afk>
There is an fstab file though, but it's r/o even as root so I gave up. It's A20 so simply booting Linux will trash the Android install anyway
<megal0maniac_afk>
Still haven't settled on a preferred A20 distro

<TuxboxGuru>
Anyone got an idea on how far CedarX reverse engineering is going ?
<vector80>
oh my god, sorry for delay
<vector80>
I am now trying to tune my system for both android and linux
<vector80>
ssvb, firstly, let me ask like this: In android, we can modify Dram Clk via sys_config.fex, however in linux, we have to statically set it in the board/sunxi/dram_myboard.c file ?
<vector80>
Is that correct ?
<TuxboxGuru>
I thought you can use script.fex on linux :-P (ignore my ramblings... n00b here)
<ssvb>
vector80: don't know about android, but currently in linux u-boot sources need to be modified to change dram parameters
<vector80>
Clear, so here is my second question
<vector80>
The only file for dram parameters is seemed to be dram_blabla.c
<ssvb>
yes
<vector80>
And in that file, most safe one seems that dram clk and CAS latency
<vector80>
Are there anything else to tune there?
<ssvb>
well, it depends, not everything is "safe"
<vector80>
I read your emails about it,
<vector80>
and it seems 432Mhz seems to be safe
<vector80>
However cubieboard use 480Mhz ?
<vector80>
I mean, by using mbw, how I can make sure one setting is safe ? Change parameters, and try for hours ?
<vector80>
My board is an A20, it has 2x512Mbyte DDR3 Hynix H5TQ4G63AFA
<vector80>
I find something very important difference
<vector80>
I have two boards
tomboy64 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<vector80>
in one of them, I connected to LVDS LCD
<vector80>
so its resolution is 1280x800
<vector80>
however the other one is set to HDMI output
<vector80>
with 1920x1080
<vector80>
So, I am testing on two boards, with different resolution
<vector80>
Is that a correct testing way ?
<ssvb>
it should not matter much
<vector80>
because 1920x1080 is significantly slower than 1280x800
<vector80>
tests are completed very after other one
<vector80>
ssvb, have a look at this photo, I almost started both test at the same time: http://imgur.com/10Ft1BZ
tomboy64 has joined #linux-sunxi
avsm has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<ssvb>
yes, 1920x1080 runs slower, but it should not affect the overall test result (pass or fail)
<ssvb>
if lima-memtester can run more than a few minutes without failing and you are bored, then you can move to 504MHz
<vector80>
yes, they are still running

the cube still rotating, I can still access to my board via SSH..
<vector80>
Let me try 504Mhz now
leviathanch2 has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<vector80>
ssvb, CPU gets extremely hot during the tests, I don't have a thermometer in my home now, but I feel it is more than 65degree celcius, is that normal ?
<vector80>
A20 doesn't have a internal controller for extreme heat, am I wrong ?
<ssvb>
vector80: there is a temperature sensor in a20 and also another one in the axp209 power chip (which also should be hot)
<vector80>
ssvb, you are no:1, thank you very much for this info.
<ssvb>
try to run the 'sensors' tool and you may already see the axp209 temperature
<vector80>
Turl, I couldn't understand one point. FT5x driver in current kernel is loaded as a module, it doesn't compile as builtin. But even as a module, it still need some symbols from sun4i-ts, otherwise it crashes... Do I make a mistake in module loading ?
<Turl>
vector80: hm, I haven't looked at it, maybe the code is just crappy and it really does depend on it
<vector80>
I feel so
<vector80>
ssvb, I have bad news.
<vector80>
The board without LCD screen, at 504Mhz, it stopped working
<vector80>
I just rebooted it manually
<vector80>
So, it seems 504Mhz is a high value :(
<ssvb>
vector80: step back to 480mhz and run the test until morning :)
<vector80>
clear
<ssvb>
vector80: the other board may be more overclockable, the overclocking limit may vary between different chips
<vector80>
well, tomorrow morning I am starting to program 1100 pcs for one big customer, I will try to use 432Mhz one just to make sure :)
<vector80>
Let me try 480Mhz until morning, see what happens.
<vector80>
After that I will sleep
<vector80>
I will finally ask two questions to you, not anymore
<vector80>
I already took a lot of your time, thank you soo much for it
<ssvb>
vector80: as for 504MHz being the high value, there is still some hope for faster dram speeds and we are currently investigating http://linux-sunxi.org/DDR_Calibration
<vector80>
1) Why you never recommended to change CAS latency? is there a reason for that?
<ssvb>
vector80: CAS latency is independent from clock speed and it is better to test one thing at a time
<ssvb>
vector80: moreover, there are other timing parameters, not just CAS latency alone
<vector80>
I see
<vector80>
I wish to continue on trying this
<vector80>
So I will read DDR_calibartion
<vector80>
2) Is there a work for enabling hardware encoder on A20 to be able to capture camera and encode to h264 ?
<ccaione>
