is pubsub still floodbased?
<r0kk3rz>
i havent seen any news that says otherwise
<Steverman>
The problem with flooding is that if everyone is fully connected, then you're bound to receive lots unnecessary information, right?

yeah
<r0kk3rz>
im starting to think that we need to use corenet to proxy existing solutions over ipfs
<r0kk3rz>
there are loads of pub sub messaging systems out there
<Steverman>
I want to give own implementation of some sort a go for my master thesis, but I don't know how easy it is to swap out
<r0kk3rz>
get ipfs to solve the p2p connectivity issue, and signalling shouldnt be that hard

<r0kk3rz>
the intent for a while would be to swap it out, so im sure the current implementation is with that in mind
<Steverman>
My first project with ipfs was p2p live streaming... but it doesn't scale well. Last time I used it was with webrtc because I wanted browser support
<r0kk3rz>
someone did that recently for a conference
<Steverman>
It was last year :)
<r0kk3rz>
this wasnt, this was a few months ago

Do you have a link?
<Steverman>
Someone asked me to show it on some monday talk thing
<r0kk3rz>
lgierth might have more information, he was at this conference
<Steverman>
Yep, I pretty did that. IPFS+HLS
<r0kk3rz>
it seemed to work well enough
<Steverman>
At a cost of delays and duplicate chunks
<Steverman>
Well, at least for me
<r0kk3rz>
no idea on the scale of viewership though
<r0kk3rz>
duplicate chunks?
<Steverman>
HLS outputs chunks instead of a stream
<Steverman>
My problem was when peers sends the same chunk at once to someone requesting it
<r0kk3rz>
sounds like a bug in ipfs, that may have been solved already
lanlink has joined #ipfs
<Steverman>
And then I had to deal with artificial delay, because only the streamer pretty much has the chunk in the beginning.
<Steverman>
Perhaps :)
<r0kk3rz>
yes i dont think you'll ever get to live as in real-time on ipfs
<Steverman>
Twitch streamers don't have real-time either afiak
<Steverman>
afaik*
<Steverman>
Depends on what real-time means :P
<Steverman>
within a certain threshold of ms?
Mikaela__ has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<r0kk3rz>
i guess
<Steverman>
But the cool thing is that I could embed the hashes into HLS .m3u8 playlist instead of the actual chunk name. And then give viewers that playlist with some offset to ensure chunk diversity
<Steverman>
That eliminates pubsub as well
<Steverman>
.m3u8 isn't big so I'm fine with having it on a centralized server

<deni>
Swedneck: It's going to be interesting to see illegal streaming move to IPFS.
<Swedneck>
only the _dnslink one is needed to use it as an ipns address, the CNAME is for redirection to my gateway, which reads the _dnslink record to find out what to return
<Swedneck>
on one hand i'd like that, as it is perfect for piracy and it would help adoption something huge
<Swedneck>
on the other hand it would really not be good for ipfs to be associated with piracy
<deni>
Swedneck: Just be aware that it doesn't return the right mime-type and therefore doesn't play directly in the browser.
<Swedneck>
i hate how you can't just put a file directly in the domain and have it work, it has to have a proper URL
<asymptotically>
>chemical/x-xyz
<asymptotically>
never seen that before :o
<deni>
Really? Are you sure you cannot set the right mime-type by configuring the server.
<deni>
* ?
<Swedneck>
not sure, besides i don't want to configure things specially for my gateway, i just want everything to be portable
<deni>
Ok
<Swedneck>
if i'm gonna configure things, i might as well just host it on a normal webserver
<deni>

the gist is that you write out a HLS playlist with /ipfs/QmFoo video chunks
<lgierth>
and keep updating that playlist as new chunks come in

ournetworks didn't go with IPNS becaue it was too flakey at the time but we're fixing that
