<stavros>
what's the current status on CIDv1 hashes? I run a pinning website called eternum.io and was wondering what the timeline would be for us to support CIDv1

<lidel>
stavros, it is one of things tackled in Q3 and Q4, we hope to be ready to flip the switch (making cidv1b32 the default) in the beginning of 2019. meta issue: https://github.com/ipfs/ipfs/issues/337 (related work is cc'd below it)
<stavros>
lidel, thank you, so 0.4.17 supports CIDv1 hashes?
<lidel>
yes, you should be able to do `ipfs add --cid-version 1 file` and get cidv1 in base58
<stavros>
I mainly just want to start testing pinning those
<stavros>
fantastic, thank you
JoL1hAHN19 has quit [K-Lined]
<lidel>
if you want to convert cidv1 to base32 you can do that at http://cid-utils.ipfs.team/ (we should have cli support for specifying base by the end of Q4)
<stavros>
that looks fantastic for debugging, thanks (although I generally just pass the hashes unmodified to the API)
<stavros>
I do validate with multihash, and I suspect that's what needs to change
<stavros>
What are the possible valid encodings a CIDv1 hash can be in?
xnbya has joined #ipfs
<stavros>
Hmm wait, are CIDv1 hashes still multibase-encoded?
<stavros>
Oh, multibase, not multihash

Hello folks. I'm trying to use js-ipfs files.cat and files.stat, just testing them out with nonsense hashes to see if I can easily check for the (local) presence of some hash. Seems impossible? Both files.cat and files.stat will just stay pending forever, never resolving the Promise. (I'm not connected to any other nodes, and won't be in production either)
mjsir911 has joined #ipfs
Mottengrotte has quit [Quit: Mottengrotte]
<OliverUv>
Anyone know if there's a way to do this? Just check for presence of a blob with a hash, or fail gracefully after some timeout when requesting it
joeyh has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
rubenwardy8 has joined #ipfs
<OliverUv>
I guess I can just use Promise.race, but I'm not sure if that'll leave this request running on idle forever...
<TUSF>
OliverUv: The ipfs.files API is for manipulating nodes in a sort of pseudo filesystem.
<TUSF>
It's generally called the MFS (mutable filesystem), and you generally put ipfs hashes you already have into it.
rubenwardy8 has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
bblindy has joined #ipfs
<OliverUv>
well, these files, in general, I will already have
<OliverUv>
I just don't want things to freeze without debug output in case a dev calls the function wrong
<TUSF>
Ok, so ipfs.files.stat is going to hang, because you don't have anything inside your MFS
<OliverUv>
this seems like it'd apply to js-ipfs-api too
<OliverUv>
the OBJECT api looks like it may be dealing with parts of "files"/buffers, not the whole buffers, so I'm not sure if I should be using that
<TUSF>
So what is it you're trying to do, exactly?
<OliverUv>
I'm using js-ipfs as the backing storage for the content serveer of a multiplayer game server, in which many players author content simultaneously
Jesin has joined #ipfs
<OliverUv>
the reason I'm using IPFS is that I can let it chunk using rabin hashes so that it'll dedup a lot of the (immutable) content the users create
mjsir911 has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<OliverUv>
currently it won't be replicating to other nodes, but in a few months, if our first prototypes are OK, that's on the agenda too, which IPFS obviously helps with
tdr29 has joined #ipfs
<OliverUv>
I think the files api makes it look like `files.add` is the endpoint I *should* be using to add new files/blobs to the data store. Added files only end up if I subsequently use `files.cp` to copy the hash to the MFS
<OliverUv>
*end up in MFS
<TUSF>
Yeah, ok. Didn't realize js-ipfs moves the basic commands into the Files API.
dcrampton20 has joined #ipfs
toorop12 has joined #ipfs

That said, yeah, ipfs.files.stat is generally only for the MFS, so not sure what it'll do if you try to stat an arbitrary CID. That said, not sure why cat isn't working

yep, for now this is a single-node system only

I'm thinking perhaps I should use files.get instead of files.cat
