ELLIOTTCABLE changed the topic of #elliottcable to: #ELLIOTTCABLE — do something cool, shove it into throats, everyone thinks it's crap, then it's all amazing.

Elliott is nomadic. He does it so the machines from the future can't find him.

guys check out this neat definition of liftM2 I wrote
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
mcc: what're your go-to languages, if not JS or Ruby?
<mcc>
heh
<mcc>
Elliottcable: In order of preference, Lua, Python, C++, Objective C.
<mcc>
Python or C++ are a toss-up which I'd prefer.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
mmm, fuck C++, but I like the rest.
<mcc>
Heh
<mcc>
If you restrict yourself to a particular part of the language
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
dabble much in anything more interesting? (Although I might actually argue that lua counts as interesting, nowadays.)
<mcc>
You can do some very nice things in it.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
mmmm. I've always found it, the people who develop with it, the conventions used thereby, and the APIs available to developers using it, too revolting to learn it well.
<mcc>
Yeah you want to avoid many of those APIs/conventions like the plague
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
ObjC or C99, when I need to be that low, thankyewverymuch.
<mcc>
So assuming we have the same definition of "Interesting", and I think we do, I think Lua is itself quite Interesting, and no, I actually avoid "Interesting" languages these days
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
mmm why's that?
<mcc>
What i want these days is languages with a wide install base and broad set of support software.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
mmmm. something I can understand, for some tasks.
<mcc>
I find PL design really fascinating, but I want to apply things to solve problems and I think the self-limiting nature of a lot of "interesting" PL means that that will get in the way
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
but that applies to what one might call “work” tasks. What about your ‘off-time,’ or hobby-time? Great times to play with new tooling.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
Taste the waters, figure out what's coming five, ten years down the line.
<mcc>
I'll be able to solve really neat problems within a file, then I'll need to like… decode a PNG, or run on Android, and suddenly I'm fucked.
<mcc>
My off-time coding is about as structured as my "on the clock" coding :)
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
that's unfortunate! D:
<mcc>
Nope, it's the way I want things.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
okay, gotta pack up and go board a flying deathtrap.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
I'll be back on in a couple hours. hearts.
<mcc>
More to the point, my off-time coding tends toward games ( http://runhello.com/ ) which comes with… interesting challenges
<mcc>
If I want to make video games which are *portable*
<mcc>
Then I have an entire unusual set of challenges
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
mcc: meet cuttle (@micahrjohnston)
<mcc>
Erlang looks super cool but I doubt it's deployable

<mcc>
elliotcable: ah ok. have fun
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
he's a games-dev nut, as well.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>

<ELLIOTTCABLE>
A little bit.
<alexgordon>
ELLIOTTCABLE: so when can we paws?
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
mmm. shit's kinda, come up.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
in the worst way. /=
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
I miiiiight, I guess, have a lot of time on the computer over the next few days
<ELLIOTTCABLE>

<ELLIOTTCABLE>
proposal to drop call/cc from scheme. mind blown.
