<gmaxwell> WOOT. google books case is great
<gmaxwell> The ultimate goal of copyright is to expand public knowledge and understanding, which
<gmaxwell> 14 copyright seeks to achieve by giving potential creators exclusive control over copying of their
<gmaxwell> 15 works, thus giving them a financial incentive to create informative, intellectually enriching
<gmaxwell> 16 works for public consumption. This objective is clearly reflected in the Constitution’s
<gmaxwell> 17 empowerment of Congress “To promote the Progress of Science . . . by securing for limited
<gmaxwell> 1 Times to Authors . . . the exclusive Right to their respective Writings.” U.S. Const., Art. I, § 8,
<gmaxwell> 2 cl. 8) (emphasis added). 11 Thus, while authors are undoubtedly important intended beneficiaries
<gmaxwell> 3 of copyright, the ultimate, primary intended beneficiary is the public, whose access to knowledge
<gmaxwell> 4 copyright seeks to advance by providing rewards for authorship.

<kinlo> c-cex-finch: did you compile it yourself or so?
<c-cex-yuriy> Yes we did :)
<c-cex-yuriy> Looks like we need some github option to use stable fork instead of default one
<kinlo> in contrast to other software, we don't recommend building your own bitcoin, you want to use the official binaries imho :)

<bsm117532> kanzure: interesting...
<bsm117532> I don't understand how it avoids double spending. It comes down to order of operations on a central tracker. Given multiple trackers, I could broadcast different spends to different trackers, and he doesn't indicate a way to resolve the discrepancy between trackers. Or did I miss something?

<trinity_help> hey, I was wondering, did anyone reputable ever vette the Vanitygen codebase?
ThomasV has quit [Quit: Quitte]
<katu> trinity_help: i dont think officialy, but i presume plenty of people have seen it
<trinity_help> katu: agreed, just wondering if anyone officially reviewed it
<phantomcircuit> trinity_help, "officially" ?
<phantomcircuit> if what your asking is whether anybody will guarantee that it works correctly.... no
<katu> trinity_help: afaik some people were only surprised about the split key mining, but thats just natural property of the ec group law and is completely secure.
<Luke-Jr> vanilla vanitygen doesn't even support that, does it?
<trinity_help> phantomcircuit: right, I guess I'm asking specifically has anyone encountered a case where the keypair output didn't match, or was a duplicate of a keypair previously generated
<phantomcircuit> i haven't seen anybody report such an error
<trinity_help> admittedly I haven't either but I've only played with it casually
<Luke-Jr> some day, I'd like to add vanity mining to BFGMiner.. :p
<katu> trinity_help: while this is possibly the most efficient "key bruteforcer" for secp256k1 publi keys available, the search space is still too enormous to accidentally trip a collision.
<trinity_help> katu: understood
dEBRUYNE has joined #bitcoin-wizards
<katu> Luke-Jr: i believe it does, though not sure about compressed keys
<Luke-Jr> katu: pretty sure I personally contributed compressed-key support years ago
<Luke-Jr> oh no, that was P2SH and never got merged https://github.com/samr7/vanitygen/pull/10
<katu> yeah, piachu takes it easy
<Luke-Jr> Piachu?
kgk has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<katu> the guy who wrote the thing, thepiachu. maybe he didnt want to get embroiled in the flaming surrounding p2sh back then ;>
<Luke-Jr> samr7 = thepiachu?
<Luke-Jr> and no, he wanted me to rewrite it to use blockchain spam
<katu> :)
<katu> samr7 is only maintainer, or alt account, god knows
<katu> but is listed in the official thread so i trust it
<Luke-Jr> anyhow, thepiachu clearly doesn't care about getting embroiled in flaming, considering all the trolling and scamcoin pumping he's been doing

<katu> i thought this is a technical channel :) but agreed, various oldtimers have .. various motivations.
esneider has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
esneider has joined #bitcoin-wizards
<Luke-Jr> well, technically this whole conversation is off-topic, as this is a future-technology channel :P
<katu> Let's discuss future of vanity addresses instead!
<Luke-Jr> there's no future for a deprecated concept
<trinity_help> Luke-Jr: what's deprecated about it?
<Luke-Jr> #bitcoin ?
<katu> honestly, i share a bit of trinity_help's worries. that vanitygen sufficiently powerful enough might trigger uber rare, but withn realm possibility fixed point in ripemd160
<katu> and second attempt to generate the prefix would yield same hash (different pk)
