whitequark: lol
<azonenberg>
theres no point to have things on you that you wouldn't need urgently
<azonenberg>
the odds of you needing to plant crops after an apocalypse with only what you have in your pockets? about zero :p
<azonenberg>
I don't carry things around with me unless i use them on a routine basis

<whitequark>
azonenberg: yeah it was more pointing and laughing
<azonenberg>
Yeah i have seen some pretty absurd stuff
<azonenberg>
some of it obviously satirical
<azonenberg>
like "tactical canned bacon"
<nats`>
for apocalypse if I had only one thing to take in an urban env it would be an axe :D
<nats`>
a fire axe
<nats`>
:D
<azonenberg>
my preference is to not be in urban areas during apocalypses :p
<azonenberg>
actually, i prefer to avoid apocalypses in general
<nats`>
agreed
<azonenberg>
That's usually the safest option
<azonenberg>
:p
<nats`>
agreed but sadly 99% of time it doesn't depend on me :)
<azonenberg>
Lol yes
<azonenberg>
And some level of preparedness is entirely reasonable if, for example, you live in earthquake country
<nats`>
yep
<azonenberg>
but we're talking a major regional disaster, not the end of civilization
<nats`>
at home I have the minimum
<nats`>
what needed for few days emergency
<nats`>
over that it's useless
<azonenberg>
i have a bit more than "the minimum" but thats because camping gear pretty much qualifies as such
<nats`>
ah yep for sport I already cover more :D
<nats`>
I'm talking about really dedicated stuff
<azonenberg>
Anyone who volunteers with any county emergency group (SAR etc) is expected to have at least 3 days of shelf-stable food/water for themselves + family at home
<azonenberg>
by county gov policy
<azonenberg>
if something happens they want you out there helping people, not worrying about if your family is taken care of
<nats`>
yep :)
<nats`>
makes sense
<azonenberg>
I have more like a week's worth of drinkable water that i rotate out annually before the expiration date, but thats b/c in this area we occasionally get sediment etc kicked up by pipe flushing and such
<azonenberg>
it's safe to drink but not exactly palatable
<nats`>
"mineral" water
<nats`>
I don't know the name
<nats`>
like evian/vittel etc
<nats`>
bottled water ?
<azonenberg>
Yeah
<nats`>
always 5 pack of 6 bottle
<azonenberg>
my stuff is just filtered tap water
<azonenberg>
not fnacy mineral water
<nats`>
they are good for years
<azonenberg>
this stuff has about a 1-year labeled shelf life
<nats`>
but 99% of time I drink water from public service :D
<azonenberg>
yeah same here
<azonenberg>
Then i have whatever food is in the house
<nats`>
yep
<azonenberg>
plus ~12 days, at 3000 calories per person for me and $WIFE (i.e. enough for heavy physical activity) of shelf-stable stuff like MREs, granola bars, and dried things
<nats`>
have to go eat :)
<azonenberg>
That's more of a bonus than a stockpiile
<nats`>
GF made blinies
<nats`>
:)
<azonenberg>
that's my camping food, stuff i keep in the pack for SAR, etc
<azonenberg>
and sure, if the zombies come while i'm home i'll eat it :p
<azonenberg>
but that isnt the point
<azonenberg>
if something lasts a long time and is cheaper in volume, buy in volume
<azonenberg>
And then i have a pretty decent amount of basic medical gear for the same reason... you don't buy two gauze pads, you buy a box
<azonenberg>
But more importantly i know how to use it... it alway annoys me when i see people stockpiling stuff they dont even know how to use
<azonenberg>
Or fixating on things like weapons and ignoring the fact that in a disaster, you're a lot more likely to need something to drink than you are to shoot a looter
<nats`>
in those case water/food/drugs will be the first rushed stuff :D
<nats`>
because zombie apocalypse is not happening :D
<nats`>
war or natural disaster are more likely :D
<cr1901_modern>
azonenberg: Which is more "tasty"... stream water with bleach or stream water w/ iodine :)?

<pie_>
why not both?

<azonenberg>
nats`: well the odds of anyone invading an island in washington are pretty low
<azonenberg>
on the other hand, it's an earthquake zone...
<azonenberg>
So natural disasters are entirely probable
<azonenberg>
the group i'm in does a big earthquake drill at least once a year
