Certainly IPFS can consume a lot of resources on mobile, and we've had to spend a lot of time optimizing that part. You can take a look at what we've done here: https://github.com/textileio/textile-mobile. That app is built using our custom framework, generated from: https://github.com/textileio/textile-go. I'm probably not the best one to ask about the specifics of our mobile optimizations, but a lot of it depends on

Since sharing and posting photos is the primary functionality of the app at the moment, if multiple peers within a thread are online at the same time, they share updates directly, p2p, so you get slightly better performance that way.

Hmm, what else... ah so we use a custom compiled framework in the app (we're hoping to release it as an actual npm module at some point), which contains the full go-ipfs node cross-compiled via gomobile

instead of doing a object.get(), checking the obj.prev CID, fetching that, and so forth -- my goal is to make an IPLD structure in the form of a linked-list, and then do a single network request as dag.get() to an object, and have it return a subtree of objects.
