hello there ! i'm trying to understand how i can use the file API (in js-ipfs) to get back old data. i.e: share files between many nodes. the closet i could find in the doc is the `options.preload` section, but that feels all too complicated, so my question is: what am i missing ?

<deltab>
xaiki: you have the hash of the old data, right?
<deltab>
sorry if I'm misunderstanding what you're asking
<xaiki>
i think i'm starting to get it. my problem is that i'm need to ensure 'no one can delete or modify files' and 'everyone can create files' but i guess that this API will not work for me because if i give away the key everyone could just publish to a new multihash right ?
<deltab>
right
<deltab>
you'll need a server that controls what gets published
<xaiki>
and then have some signaling over pubsub or something ?
<deltab>
yeah
yrzr has joined #ipfs
<xaiki>
then i guess maybe scuttlebutt is more apropriate than IPFS for my application, booh wanted to play with it =)
<deltab>
alternatively you can have each node sign its own additions, then clients can decide which version to use, by checking that signatures are valid and records have been composed following the rules
<xaiki>
but in that model how would they 'find each other' ?
<deltab>
using pubsub could be one way
<xaiki>
seems like a lot of hand-handled signaling
<deltab>
yeah, it's not something you get out of the box yet
<xaiki>
cool, thanks heaps for your help deltab, you cleared my doubts in no time !

<M-Sonata>
How latency-tolerant is bitswap?
<M-Sonata>
And in particular, in a sneakernet situation:
<M-Sonata>
Suppose A can only connect to B, and B can only connect to at most one at a time of A or the rest of the network.
<M-Sonata>
A, while connected to B, tries to open a particular file/hash, which neither of them currently have stored. B then disconnects from A and reconnects to the network. Does B's node automatically relay A's request, or does A's operator have to talk to B's operator?

what is the format of keys generated by 'ipfs key gen'? how do I use them to sign some stuff?
