Ixnus Sorry, the tvin is another project. Hmm, I'm not that sure anymore that this A23 tablet is a Q8 compatible one. The PCB says TW_A0721_V31, the script.fex says a23-p1 as machine string. I have the script.bin/fex but I'm not sure how to convert the `axp_ctrl` and `port:power4` entries in it's usbc0 tree to the device tree.
<kilobyte_ch>
The Tablet originally runs android and otg is working there.

i'm currently focused on the H3 series of orange pi boards, in particular orange pi +2e. i am considering whether or not this sbc or the H3 soc, or which of the allwinner-based sbc's, would make for a decent htpc?
<ullbeking>
the main issues will be:
<ullbeking>
which igpu's are best supported by linux...
<ullbeking>
and whether the h3/h5/h6/a20/a64/etc has enough oomph for minor video processing, e.g., coding and decoding in cpu
<ullbeking>
the bulk of the multimedia storage will be stored on a nas on the lan

I have been running a lot of things on a64 and I think there is cedrus support in the kernel, but I don't know to what extent this is being used in libraries for desktop use
<psydread>
one interesting thing for me was that I was just able to play a 1920x1080 video on the console using cvlc but not in Xorg

ullbeking: just run a ffmpeg encoding job to see how slow it is. best benchmark is test running the intended workload
<ullbeking>
megi: yes, i intend to create the htpc system using ffmpeg and vlc

did you investigate this issue? is it something that you think is resolvable? is there anything like an bug filed upstream somewhere?
<ullbeking>
or did you go "meh" and kinda just leave it as unimportnat?
HeatfanJohn has joined #linux-sunxi
<pmp-p>
or maybe fbturbo is required somewhere

ullbeking, I didn't go "meh" (I *never* go "meh"), but I just wanted to be sure it's not already a work in progress. I am actually studying a lot of things these days to be able to help figure any problems out in a few months, when classes will be over. I actually got 3D acceleration working a few weeks ago with the help of a few people here.
<psydread>
I do think it's resolvable as libraries start making use of the in-kernel encoding/decoding support. I just wanted to mention that even without using the VPU for decoding the CPU seems just about capable of pulling this off, so it should be even better when all support is in place. This is the only machine that is turned on 24/7 and I try to as much development as possible on the SBC itself

I will do some more testing this weekend and possibly file a bug report with my findings

Anyone knows if this is compatible with the q8 tablet dts? https://pastebin.com/raw/g6fgS6JY I'm not sure how I can define this drive vbus pin in a dts.

<ullbeking>
psydread: ok i still have a lot to learn about the state of video support in allwinner soc's. as far as i can make out, cedrus is an open source video acceleration set of drivers or libraries, that is needed in addition to the proprietary blob mali400 drivers that all/most allwinner soc's seem to have. no?
<psydread>
ullbeking, I don't run any blobs anymore, it's all open now thanks to the great work done by this community. Mesa provides 3D support and cedrus should do the same thing for VPU support.
<ullbeking>
psydread: you mean that cedrus is sufficiently complete and stable so as to function as a replacement for the proprietary blob driver that is "normally" used for the mali400?
<ullbeking>
this is good news :-)
<psydread>
ullbeking, it may not be fully functional or mature, but there is no way I am going back to blobs :) I would rather help to get cedrus support working out in any way I can
<KotCzarny>
cedrus is VE(video engine), lima-ng is mali/3d
<ullbeking>
psydread: indeed, i understand that sentiment completely

KotCzarny: is there a description somewhere that describes the relationship between cedrus and lima-ng?
lurchi_ is now known as lurchi__
<KotCzarny>
no relationship
<KotCzarny>
one does 3d, the other video enconding/decoding
<ullbeking>
i see
<KotCzarny>
3d might be used by window manager or application (kodi) to draw gui
<KotCzarny>
and video engine is to play or record movies
fl_0 has joined #linux-sunxi
<ullbeking>
so is there an open source driver for the graphics hardware, i.e., for the basic communication? or does it use a "standard" graphics protocol to communicate with the mali400?
<KotCzarny>
for mali there is lima-ng project
<ullbeking>
ok
<KotCzarny>
but i guess armbian might have all that integrated already
<KotCzarny>
and if you are after video player, check out libreelec-h3
<ullbeking>
where is the main page for lima-ng source code and dev? i'm being taken to many broken links in github, and the main website doesn't seem to work...?
sunilmohan has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<KotCzarny>
it is self contained kodi build
<ullbeking>
what about if i want to use something other than kodi?
