hello, on http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainline_Kernel_Howto , when it comes to compiling the kernel, it is recommended to use the following parameter "LOADADDR=0x40008000". Now I don't know much about how the kernel works, and the details about the boot process, but I was wondering if anyone here could tell me, how was this address value determined (why is it this adress anot not another one).. sorry for an annoying question

hi guys, I am trying to boot with a 3.18rc1 kernel on the cubietruck, I only got 1 ext4 partition on the sdcard. it contains my /boot folder and teh rest of the rootfs, but for some reason my kernel stops loading : [ 1.205380] Waiting for root device /dev/mmcblk0p1...
<Faisal>
has anyone got an idea what might be wrong here ?
<Faisal>
mripard: thank you so much for looking into this, really appreciated, i'll get that fixed and try again
<mripard>
It used to be selected automatically, and got removed
<mripard>
a patch is on its way to a later -rc
<Faisal>
mripard: sounds good
<Faisal>
btw, do you know if I still need to specify the path for my root fs in the uboot.scr, or is it unnecesarry since I only got 1 partition ?

what do you mean?

anyone here have any experience with submitting kernel backport patches? I'm a little confused about where to send it and how to format it properly.
<oliv3r>
well i meant, the kernel _needs_ a root, and it always has one, either empty (which gives you a quite useless system, unless everything that needs to be done is handled in kernel mode), a rootfs mounted from initramfs or some medium
<oliv3r>
but that's how I understood it
<oliv3r>
or was it that it always needs an initramfs; even if you don't use it you stil get one (empty however)

mainline or sunxi?
<alexxy>
i'm trying to use mainline u-boot and mainline linux 3.18-rc1 kernel on cubietruck
<alexxy>
but it cannot init sata drive
<maz>
alexxy: what's the exact issue?
<alexxy>
u-boot scsi scan reports sata timeout issue
<alexxy>
and didnt find any sata drives
<maz>
maz: I have the same thing when using an SSD. seems to work fine with a proper disk.
<alexxy>
kernel also didnt see sata drive on which rootfs
<maz>
more worrying.
<alexxy>
i have intel ssd
<maz>
alexxy: same thing. Intel 520. u-boot dan't see it, kernel works just fine.
<rafaelMOD>
wens: thanks! i am developing an A23/A33 (pin to pin) board, and i am asking my PCBA partner to place some with A23 and some with A33. But i think i wont be able even to boot a33!!
<rafaelMOD>
oliv3r: What kernel are you booting on your A33 hardware?
nabblet has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<mripard>
leio: and I keep telling you that it's not true. You can very well not use one, and it's very common
<Turl>
wens: what's the current situation wrt a80 and the bootloader stack?
<rafaelMOD>
They use to say that A33 and A23 are pin to pin compatible, but i just checked the datasheets and they are not, or the datasheets are wrong. The datasheets are wrong anyway, as A23 has pin G14 as HBIAS and PB4. But A23 lacks 2 pins that are on A33, N7 (DCKE1) and N5 (DCS1) for the DRAM. And pin M8 is VCC-EFUSE on A33 and is GND on A23.

and there's basically nothing generated at all, only a very dumb runtime-generated rootfs skeleton

that's what I meant, semantics, that there always is one, it's just empty as it's so cheap that avoiding it doesn't win anythin

hi, it seems that the 3.4 kernel prevents me from properly upgrading gentoo. What's you strategy (assuming some of you use gentoo) to deal with this? pin-point/fix versions?
<hramrach_>
my strategy is to use Debian
lioka has quit [Quit: leaving]
<hramrach_>
presumably you can run gentoo without a kernel installed or with a fake package or something
<nabblet>
run gentoo without a kernel installed <- i don't understand
<bonbons>
nabblet: Gentoo updates fine here - though running mainline, but don't know why 3.4 would cause any Gentoo specific trouble...
<hramrach_>
In Debian I do not install a kernel package when using a sunxi kernel
<hramrach_>
I just copy the kernel to the SD card
<hramrach_>
so as far as debian is concerned there is no kernel

ijc, ping hi, what is missing to be able boot from sata while ssd is powered through cubieboard?
* indy
would like to reduce number of power adapters to run cubieboard from sata
<ijc>
indy: If it doesn't just work and you are 100% sure you are providing sufficient power of the correct voltage and sufficient current to the drive via the board then I'm afraid what it needs is to dig in and debug it...
<ijc>
Perhaps the first thing to try would be to increase WAIT_MS_LINKUP some more. After that you're into trawling datasheets and trial and error I suspect, perhaps comparing behaviour of the Linux driver if that works etc.
<indy>
ijc, where? (WAIT_MS_LINKUP)
<ijc>
indy: It's in the ahci driver, grep should find it.
* ijc
heads to bed.
* indy
too :)
