Hello, I just bought a Cubietruck to introduce my son to Linux. We quickly meet a U-Boot installed on it that waits 0 seconds for "press any key" on the serial console and refuses to do anything except boot the canned Android (we want to run normal Linux on SD Card)... any advice?

<paulk-collins>
baffled_, well you probably are booting from NAND
<paulk-collins>
but perhaps it can read uEnv.txt from sdcard
<baffled_>
paulk-collins: Yes I am pretty sure that's true
<paulk-collins>
else, just build U-Boot and install it to the sdcard
<baffled_>
I am just surprised it doesn't let me interrupt the boot
<paulk-collins>
then you can add a longer delay and change the environment more easily
<paulk-collins>
well, that's to make it boot faster
<paulk-collins>
1 or 2 seconds lost waiting is a lot
<baffled_>
I have a Cubieboard 2 that would let be interrupt the boot from Nand
<baffled_>
Normally even if you set it for 0, U-Boot will respond if you're spamming it on serial
<baffled_>
Anyway.... so it will prefer to boot from U-Boot stored on the SD Card if it can find it?
<paulk-collins>
yeah I think you're right
<paulk-collins>
yeah, sdcard boots first

libv: don't be so negative/pessimistic ;-)
<ssvb>
libv: afaik they still promised a80 docs eventually, and maybe dram code (but not the docs) for newer SoCs
<ssvb>
libv: so more updates are likely expected

<wens>
it is possible that they haven't finished the docs :|
<libv>
ssvb: what about this kernel they released that is gpl compatible?
<libv>
by deleting all the binaries and such in it...

they are "apparently" not big fans of collaboration at all

libv: well, it's one of the ways to comply with the letter of GPL
<ssvb>
libv: but but doing this, they are surely framing up the device manufacturers who are actually delivering blobs to the end users
<wens>
Turl: :)
<ssvb>
libv: trying the legal avenue, should somebody maybe try to contact HP or other reputable manufacturers, who are using Allwinner SoCs in their devices?
<Turl>
ssvb: I'll bet they'll be like "linux? wat.jpg"

whatever GPL violation gets shipped needs to get the corresponding sources or the company loses the right to use any piece of GPL code ever again
<mnemoc>
I doubt HP would like that
<ssvb>
mnemoc: well, MSI seems to have had already discontinued their A20/A31s tablets
<mnemoc>
that doesn't forgive them
<mnemoc>
legally speaking
<ssvb>
mnemoc: if somebody starts pestering HP about GPL, then this might encourage HP to stop using Allwinner SoCs too
<mnemoc>
and so encourage allwinner to stop violating the gpl :(
<ssvb>
yeah, and deal strictly just with the Chinese no-name vendors who don't really care
