Zboonet has quit [Quit: Leaving]

cpufreq should save power but most people don't care because the battery powered systems that are usable are rare
<hramrach_>
so if you want to know which governor saves power and still gives decent performance you will have to experiment with your board
<hramrach_>
anyone has a working a23 kernel?
<hramrach_>
I tried uploading a kernel built from the frankenkernel sources and it locks up during/after fs_initcall processing
<hramrach_>
I get pretty much no output excent memory size and the debug calls I added in arch/arm/kernel/setup.c and arch/arm/mach-sunxi/sun8i.c
<hramrach_>
in spite of setting debug_initcall=1 in u-boot environment I get no output from that
<hramrach_>
uploading over fel
<hramrach_>
since I have only fel spl and I have no idea how to extract memory parameters from existing spl to build working spl for other media
<hramrach_>
not that it matters if the kernel does not boot anyway
<hramrach_>
also does anyone have an a31 device? there seems to be budget a31 tablet available from Sencor but I wonder if a31 can deliver some decent performance

mostly wrt memory bandwidth

<hramrach_>
as for memory bandwidth on the Sencor a31 tablet .. the only notice on the intewebs I found about it is that the a31 is too slow for a Retina display and htere is no way around that

because it seems a31 devices aren't
<blueLumocolor>
though I set fantasy governor to builtin instead of a module
<blueLumocolor>
so I won't know if fantasy as a mod is broken or not btw
<hramrach_>
hmm, from the press release a83t is worse than a80 if anything
<hramrach_>
which seems to be the trend with aX3 SoCs
<hramrach_>
so since I have no use for A80 I have no need to look at a83t at all
stulluk has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<hramrach_>
there is only one SoC of AW that is worthwhile - the A13 gives you a somewhat usable device at unparalleled price. A10 and a20 are somewhat useful for devboards but the advantage an a23 tablet gets over a14 one is negligible
<nove>
before and at the right of th start of a80 devices selling the was some reference to an a80t (likely renamed to a83t), this speaks that a80 is not what it was hoped it would be

Still I would require to use USB3 adaptors for some stuff the Intel board had natively and I would probably get better performance and features from a PC the same cost.

<hno>
libv?
<libv>
hno: oliv3r had given eva a list a few months ago, to get boards for the community
<libv>
that never happened apparently
<hno>
Yes, and Simos did not know about that list.
<libv>
instead this happened, and i am glad that at least one established person in our community got such a board
<libv>
i have no idea what use the other offered boards will be
<hno>
There was plenty of time for interested people to announce their interest.
<libv>
sure
<oliv3r>
libv: what do you mean, a80 boards action? you mean the ml thread?
<oliv3r>
im kinda pissed of 'simos' _effort_ who is he and what has he done for us?
<oliv3r>
he just whined at the right time at the right place and got himself a devboard (and 4 others)
<oliv3r>
we're very lucky wens, hno, mrippard (i think) got one
<oliv3r>
other then that it was a wtf thing happening
<hno>
Personally I am not yet sure if I am happy or depressed from receiving the board, kind of expect a bit more from a dev board offering like some information about the board, CPU, important components, and SDK..
<libv>
wens bought his iirc
<oliv3r>
unless of course he is some new hardcore dev that wrote tons for us and i missedthat (quite likley as i been hiding)
<hno>
But I see no reason at all why anyone should be pissed at Simos. If you should be pissed at anyone then it's AW.
<oliv3r>
well aw absolutly
<oliv3r>
no hno you prob missed this
<hno>
missed what?
<oliv3r>
%? weeks ago eva got in touch with me asking for a list of members that are ery active

Yes, I know that.

Simos have been quite active since at least July. But what lead up to this was his "Interview questions to Allwinner" I think.
<hno>
Which then lead to "Introductions and Allwinner documentation update", bringing Kevin and Sugar into the loop.
<oliv3r>
ah right, but didnt that die off somewhat? but wi5h active i ment patches ;)
<oliv3r>
so hopefully we see some a80 code now :)
<hno>
I am a bit dead in the water without at least some A80 information or sources. The SDK is not that useful.
<hramrach_>
hmm, looking at these octa boards
<hramrach_>
all just 2gb ram
<hramrach_>
disappointing
<hramrach_>
at least this is area where AW could win with off-soc RAM over Samsung
<hno>
hramrach_, agreed. Expected 4GB and is what the marketing material for the A80 board says.. but specifications say 2GB.
<hno>
and there is ofcourse 2GB on the board.
<hno>
oliv3r, I wouldn't say it died off. Resulted in AW collecting all the docs for the prior gen SoCs in one clean batch and delivering them to the community, of which Simos is part.
<hramrach_>
but no. for about same price you get board with same ram, useless graphics, less IO. Odroid has more USB ports and those power and temp sensors. At least the optimus has native GBit ethernet
pwhalen has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<hramrach_>
hmm, actually SM-T705 and SM-T700 tablets already ship with 3GB ram
<hramrach_>
I wonder how they pulled that off but it's clearly more than any A80 device in existence
<hramrach_>
as always you can get 3-4 decent Chinese tablets for 1 samsung octa-core. And 3-4 A13 tablets for one decent, heh
<hno>
I am happy there is no USB hub on the board.
<hramrach_>
hmm, I am not sure if the numerous ports on the odriod are due to a hub
<libv>
hno: it didn't take long for simos to start shouting loud that i put myself outside of the community
<libv>
and i am not sure whether that interview thing actually ended up happening
<hramrach_>
I think the usb3 ports are native and the usb2 are probably in part from that odd USB+ethernet thingy
<libv>
there was something on cnx-software, but that barely was an interview with questions from the linux-sunxi community
<libv>
so i am not sure to what extent he really should feel that he triggered this
<libv>
i think there has been enough pressure on Aw for a long time
<libv>
also, this current release of docs doesn't feel like much
<hno>
I am sorry you feel offended by someone doing something.
<hno>
truly sorry.
<libv>
from offline talks with eva, we had hoped to be at this stage in february already
<libv>
hno: ?
<libv>
hno: there is one thing claiming to be the sole responsible for allwinner supposedly thawing out (we only just saw the first tiny drop of water here), another to try and stick a knife in an established community member that quickly

Simos is by no means a newcomer in the community. Has been around since late 2012. But not very vocal until end of July this year.
<hno>
I think the main problem here is that both oliv3r and Simos made the effort to talk to Allwinner privately outside the mainlinglist.
