<oliv3r> mripard_: yeah, good post; and appearantly, you can use btoh constructsi guess :)
<oliv3r> he was really explanatory about it, so that's good
<mripard_> you think so? I found it was severely lacking some explanations.
<mripard_> he tells you how to do it, but neither when or why.
<mripard_> and seriously, who cares about systemd anyway ? :)
<oliv3r> LOL hahaha yeah :S
<oliv3r> well it eplained me some of the basics to get started :)
<oliv3r> btw, i read something a while ago, that #define TIMER_CNTVAL_REG(val)(0x10 * val + 0x18) is a really bad idea
<oliv3r> one should always use #define TIMER_CNTVAL_REG(val)(0x10 * (val) + 0x18)
<oliv3r> in case the caller does some really weird shit
<oliv3r> why isn't tha tthe case there?
<mripard_> because I forgot the braces.

<Turl> I haven't tested yet
<mripard_> I think I know what's going on

<hglm> I succesfully compiled and booted sunxi-3.4 with gcc 4.8 -- I did apply a patch which fixes a bug in memset which may be the reason it works. I did not verify whether sunxi-3.4 compiled with gcc 4.8 works without the patch.

<Turl> I'm using 4.8.1 linaro to build mainline and it works just fine
<rz2k> then it was applied
<hglm> Turl: Maybe that's because mainline already incorporates the fix that is mentioned in the link ssvb posted.
<hglm> It would be useful for linux-sunxi to backport the fix to be able to use gcc 4.8.x.
<ssvb> maybe, just send a patch :)

<ssvb> hglm: maybe we should also check the newer point releases of the stable 3.4 kernel
<ssvb> it might be that an upgrade would be a better idea than cherry picking
<hglm> OK, I'll check the latest stable 3.4 upstream release to see whether it has the fix.

<Turl> Superpelican: press a key when uboot asks you to
<Superpelican> Turl:I never see U-Boot
<Superpelican> Turl:The screen is black until Linux boots
<Superpelican> Turl:Aside from that I've a tablet, so I can't access a keyboard until Linux has booted
<Superpelican> Turl:Unless... will pressing the power or volume keys also work?
<Turl> Superpelican: ah, I understand what you're asking now
<Turl> no, you cannot get uboot on a screen
<Turl> you need a serial console (uart)
<Superpelican> Turl:Won't I need a serial port then
<Superpelican> Turl:Both my computer and tablet have no serial port
<Turl> on your computer you can buy a usb to uart thingy for a couple of US$
<Turl> on the tablet, you can get serial out via the uSD port if you are not using it
<Superpelican> Turl:And there is no other way?
<Turl> or you can solder to the tx, rx, gnd pins inside the tablet if available, you might need to probe around
<Turl> Superpelican: to access uboot console? that's the only way I'm aware of
<Superpelican> Yes, I need the U-Boot console
<Turl> you can make an environment and have it run on boot though if what you just need is to run stuff on uboot
<Superpelican> Turl:Could I also make a boot.scr or something that drops me to the U-Boot console?
<Turl> Superpelican: yeah but a console without a way to interact with is no use :)
<Turl> uboot has no support for video
<Superpelican> Turl:And U-Boot of course doesn't have drivers for an usb-keyboard
<Turl> yeah, no usb support at all
<Superpelican> Turl:But I can access the U-Boot console on my Nokia N900
<Turl> yeah but it's a nokia, not a sunxi device :)
<Superpelican> Turl:But how U-Boot on the N900 have video support and u-boot sunxi not?
<Turl> Superpelican: because nokia people wrote drivers for uboot to support video and sunxi people haven't
<Superpelican> ok
<Superpelican> Turl:But if I buy an uart to usb thing, how do I connect it to the tablet?
<Turl> you'd need a uSD breakout board to expose the uSD signals and some cables
<Superpelican> But I boot the tablet from uSD
<Superpelican> Well I can try without console
<Superpelican> It's just that I'm porting Mer to my tablet
<Superpelican> says that you should have access to the U-Boot console
<Superpelican> I guess I could also just update my boot.scr every time
<Superpelican> It's not as handy
<Superpelican> but it works
