<xming> sjoerd: why does this page says that it will boot from SD? http://wiki.t-firefly.com/index.php/Firefly-RK3288/Boot_Ubuntu_from_sd/en

<xming> hmmm
<xming> $ ./firefly/tools/mkimage -T rksd -d firefly/spl/u-boot-spl-dtb.bin spl.bin
<xming> Warning: SPL image is too large (size 0x8e61) and will not boot

<sjoerd> xming: hrm always forget about that
<sjoerd> older toolchains have an issue with the resulting binary size ending up just too big
<xming> gcc 4.9 and binutils 2.25.1 here
<xming> not the most recent but neither ancient
<xming> do I need gcc 5.x?

<diego71_> hi, how can I boot from sdcard on the firefly?
cristian_c has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<diego71_> also, I've tried to use rkflashkit, but never found the device. Even if I power on the board with recovery key pressed, it just boots up...
cristian_c has joined #linux-rockchip
cristian_c has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<sjoerd> ah the kernel not booting is an indepdent issue.. maskrom ddr init -> spl -> direct u-boot load from SD fails to boot the kernel, while loading the exact same spl from SD works fine

<naobsd> hm
<naobsd> spl becomes too large with gcc (Ubuntu/Linaro 5.2.1-23ubuntu1~14.04.2) 5.2.1 20151031
<naobsd> v2015.10 is fine
<naobsd> master is too large
<naobsd> I guess recent changes such as NS16550_SERIAL and/or RK3036 support causes it
<naobsd> ^about u-boot
<xming> v2015.10 of what? uboot or gcc
<naobsd> u-boot v2015.10
<xming> uboot-rockchip is smaller than upstream
<naobsd> it supports rk3288 well
<xming> upstream is 36K and uboot-rockchip is 33K
<naobsd> uboot-rockchip == http://git.denx.de/?p=u-boot/u-boot-rockchip.git ?
<xming> yes
<xming> ah uboot is tagged in git with those v2015.10 alikes
<sjoerd> naobsd: yeah the spl has always uncomfortably close to the limit :/
<xming> tried to disable some functions but it's too large
<xming> and -Os didn't make any difference
<naobsd> probably uart/timer/ddr should be enough as like as rk3036...
<naobsd> sjoerd: about your patch which supports saving u-boot env on SD
<sjoerd> naobsd: btw i managed to load u-boot through maskrom mode.. Unfortunately evne just loading the spl via maskrom and letting it pull u-boot from SD card causes the kernel not to boot :(
* sjoerd needs to figure out if some exception handlers/interrupt handlers/cache setups needs to be undone
<naobsd> when u-boot is loaded by mask rom, it should be placed just after spl, so env@96k might not be good
<xming> what do I miss (feature wise) if I use v2015.10?
<sjoerd> naobsd: the @96 k is where it's put on the SD card not memoery
<naobsd> sjoerd: I recommend to use just before @1M for env
<naobsd> well,
<naobsd> now: header@32k spl@36k- env@96k uboot@128k
<sjoerd> yes
<xming> 32497 bytes iwth v2015.10
<xming> \o/
<naobsd> future: header@32k spl@36k- uboot@??? env@???(96k is too near)
<naobsd> checking u-boot-dtb.bin size...
<naobsd> v2015.10 u-boot-dtb.bin is 265k
<xming> v2016.01-rc1 doesn't build
<sjoerd> naobsd: why is it to near ?
<sjoerd> naobsd: the spl can be a maximun of 32k, so it extens to at most 68bytes from the start of storage, so 96k is nicely behind that
<naobsd> header@32k spl@36k-68k uboot@68k-333k env@???
<naobsd> I'm talking
<sjoerd> ans between 96 - 128k there is32 kilobyte of space for the environment which more then enough
<naobsd> "when u-boot is loaded by mask rom"
<sjoerd> then the environemne is not relevant
<sjoerd> those setting are purely related to positoins on _storage_
<naobsd> if my understanding is correct, when loading u-boot by mask rom(after loading spl from SD), u-boot need to be placed just after spl on SD
<naobsd> or can we specify where is 2nd binary blod in header on SD?
<naobsd> s/blod/blob/
<naobsd> I'm talking about _storage_
<sjoerd> naobsd: for 3288, the spl itself loads u-boot from mmc
<naobsd> _now_
<naobsd> I'm talking about _future_
<sjoerd> i don't think that's going to change :)
<naobsd> then
<naobsd> how about rk3036?
<sjoerd> that one is quite different
<naobsd> we use quite different SD layout for same rockchip family?
<sjoerd> i don't know where its rom loads the second stage from, from ther epatches though it seems the header has a offset for a second spote
<sjoerd> naobsd: not really the same family is it though :)
<naobsd> ok, same rockchip brand
<naobsd> I thought there is offset parameter for 2nd blob
<naobsd> if my memory is correct rockchip person who added rk3036 support make it zero
<naobsd> sorry, I have to go out soon
<naobsd> I'll check rk3036 code again
<sjoerd> naobsd: could well be
<sjoerd> naobsd: and the neys for 3036 both u-boot itself and its environment need to live in different spots
<naobsd> what I want to recommend is use same SD layout as much as possible
<sjoerd> then on 3288
<naobsd> between Rockchip SoCs
<sjoerd> submit patches ? :)
<sjoerd> tbh i don't know if the spl knows its own side
<sjoerd> *size
<naobsd> well
<naobsd> my idea is only if mask rom loads u-boot from SD just after spl location
<naobsd> if mask rom understand offset for u-boot in header, current layout (env@96k, uboot@128k) should be good
<naobsd> I'm not sure
<naobsd> I know threre is offset for 2nd blob in header@64k but I guess it might be unused
<naobsd> if it's used, no problem
<naobsd> check it later...
<naobsd> bye
