hmmm I'm torn on doing intel or amd for this next rig build. I just want cheap. all it's doing is managing the gpus
<apc>
so far, cheapest combo is a used gigabyte mobo with amd athlon II
<apc>
like $50
<Mercosity>
Alpha AXP
<Bouowmx>
Intel Celeron G3900
<Mercosity>
64bit RISC VMS
<Bouowmx>
Although I think you need a Z170 chipset (expensive) motherboard to use multiple GPUs with PCI Express lanes direct from CPU
<Bouowmx>
Don't quote me
<apc>
that chip alone is $40 used
<apc>
the mobo I found is a gigabyte 970, same chipset as my main rig, so I know it can do multiple gpus
<apc>
like so far everything I need excep the gpus totals up to about $120, mobo, cpu, 8gb mem, usb stick for the os, and the risers
<apc>
I have the psu, I'll build the frame outta wood
<apc>
cheapcheapcheap
<apc>
must be cheap!
<apc>
it will be ducted... of course.
<Bouowmx>
Retailers and their odd pricing: Intel Core i3-6100 from Intel is 117 USD and from retailers, the same. Core i3-6300 is 139 USD from Intel but 150 from retailers
<Bouowmx>
0.1 GHz boost and 1-MB extra cache for 33 USD: ok
<apc>
this is kinda cool. main rig on one screen. ubuntu VM on the secondary. boinc crunching away. ethereum and decred mining hard. full load all around. 27% memory usage at 9gb. I love living in the future
<mrtrousers>
If i were a potential investor, wouldnt buy gridcoin unless there was a wikipedia article, and could find more info on rob halford.
<mrtrousers>
Or gridcoins dev team
<apc>
I noted the other day when reading the boinc credit system wiki that there was no gridcoin page. but I'm not a team player enough to have set one up. good job, netizen! :)
<mrtrousers>
Im just still researching gridcoin, trying to find out if it has the potential i thought it had..
<apc>
right now is a bad time to evaluate that potential
<mrtrousers>
why?
<apc>
one ethereum goes proof-of-stake, there's going to be a lot of people looking for something they can gpu mine
<apc>
*once
<mrtrousers>
Oh i dont look it like that..
<mrtrousers>
JUst because gpus need somthing to crunch, they may as well play videogames and get badges..
<mrtrousers>
Or pokemon farming lol
<apc>
that's what a lot of people will do: sell their gpus to gamers
<apc>
but a lot more are really into the concept of mining crypto
<apc>
for its own sake
<apc>
there's other altcoins to mine, but nothing is anywhere near as profitable as ethereum right now
<apc>
once ethereum isn't an option, the playing field will be more level
<apc>
"put your rig to work, make money, and do science" suddenly becomes very attractive even in the absence of comparable profits

but the connectors are wave soldered usually
<Peppernrino>
i'm saying he's scared of harming components probly
<Peppernrino>
kinda the same formula i use to make dabs
<apc>
he'd prolly be fine sticking it in the oven at 300-350degF for a minute or two, just enough to get the surface of the residue to melt

except keep it in the oven during the heat up AND cool down process.

<reddy1975>
guys, when I have some troubles with Fedora and new kernels (for GPU too, I'm using bumblebee for Nvidia on my laptop), I have some workaround working for me
<reddy1975>
it usually happen after updates, but not often.
<reddy1975>
my workaround is: 1) downloading latest installation driver for GPU from Nvidia site
<apc>
I need food. I shall seek to change this condition
<reddy1975>
2) Going to system level 3 (init 3) - as root
<reddy1975>
3) install new driver
<Peppernrino>
i have trouble working in tty in bodhi. can't figure out how to unlock it.
<reddy1975>
4) uninstall new driver
<reddy1975>
5) reboot system
<reddy1975>
6) bumblebee will do new recompilation again and it works
<Peppernrino>
nice
<Peppernrino>
fedora, eh...?
<reddy1975>
yep :D
<reddy1975>
Fedora 24 now
<reddy1975>
last weekend I did it again after kernel updates... bumblebee was not able to install kernel driver for GPU, I did my workaround and then the compilation was successful and GPU was fully usable :)
<reddy1975>
don't ask me how it works, I have no glue how is it possible, but it works
