I wonder and was going to ask Peppernrino because I assume he used apt to install boinc where he is having gpu issues , if he had tried to compile from source , and if since he was newer to linux help him ./compile make and make install... but I assume the stock dpkg the apt system snags auto starts up with gpu as an option compiled in? as I see options when compiling and for example bitchx a client for irc does not compile with ipv6
<jamezz>
without telling it to... so --with-gpu=yes or what ever being an option , and precompiled packages are notorious for being basic to get it running , more advanced options compiled from source for less novice users.

Where to start. Gridcoin wallet is up up and running, synced, and seemed to be staking alright the past day (magnitude 0 or 0.2, too low to matter) and 1 gridcoin thanks to the faucet. I'm joined up with the gridcoin pool and have some processes running on BOINC. Realized I hadn't sent a beacon, so I did so. Now the console "list cpids" tells me my
<Openflames>
CPID is corrupted (weak auth?) and I'm locked into INVESTOR mode. Do I have to wait for my beacon to register in the neural net?
<Phay>
so just like Phay@gmail.com TAB penisman3 ENTER
<Phay>
obviously that isn't my gmail or password, but you get the point
<Phay>
(I think) lol
<Phay>
kk Openflames. So you've had the wallet open how long?
<Openflames>
I've rebooted it twice in the past 2 hours (last was ~30-45 minutes.
<Openflames>
Otherwise it was open for the past 36 hours
<Phay>
oh. I meant since install
<mrtrousers>
yes btw, what is a beacon?
<Phay>
k great
<Phay>
a beacon is sorta like a... "post" or signal saying your wallet or CPID exists
<mrtrousers>
and why it costs coin?
<Phay>
to my knowledge...
<Phay>
no idea lol
<Openflames>
Beacon tells the net "hey here I am, pay me here"
<Phay>
^
<Phay>
lol
<Phay>
Openflames, was Investor Mode ever NOT appearing on the main wallet window
<mrtrousers>
how do you send beacon?
<Phay>
?
<Openflames>
I've been learning about GRC for the past 3 days after having absolutely squat knowledge about crypto coins and the like. This has been... interesting.
<Openflames>
Investor mode has NEVER previously shown on my gridcoin wallet
<Openflames>

<Phay>
so.. Is your boinc open right now?
<Openflames>

<Phay>
kk
<mrtrousers>
i pres enter and nothing happens
<Openflames>
It's swapped from solo SETI and WCG
<Openflames>
to the pool CSG and Cosmology@h
<Phay>
the way Investor mode is "prevented" is during install. Supposedly, if you have boinc installed and already run (noting default folders - Though there is a way around that cuz I dumb), the wallet should be like "oh hey, you exist! I'ma add that BOINC profile" and that prevents Investor
<Openflames>
On the Projects list, under Account the pool address is listed, and says I'm on team Gridcoin. Wallet still says pool is disabled, even though I have Pool Mining (in advanced settings) enabled

SO whats exactly a beacon, how long does it last?
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
!beacon
<fediverse>
When you advertise a beacon, the Gridcoin network knows of your existence. This info is saved in the !superblock
<fediverse>
Advertise the beacon from the wallet's debug menu with: execute advertisebeacon
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
it lasts for about 6 months
<aybiss>
370grc. funkaaaay
<Tahvok>
customminer: another problem with gui.. Why there is no button to send a beacon?
<customminer>
Tahvok: It's usually an automatic process. just type the command 'execute advertisebeacon'
<Tahvok>
I guess I'll do a list with all the problems with the gui, and we'll see how to clean that later
<customminer>
kl
<Tahvok>
customminer: why should a new user, find some weird 'debug' window in the 'help' section and send a weird command
<customminer>
they don't, the client should automatically send the beacon
<Tahvok>
even better..
<customminer>
if they run into issues they can run the command
<Tahvok>
I wonder if I should create that list in the wiki?
<customminer>
nah, make the list in the forum
<Tahvok>
Ok
<aybiss>
tahvok the killer one is 'staking balance'. reads zero and keeps the new user going in circles for days

aybiss: I'll add that to the list
<aybiss>
i was just about to post on the whitelist thread with some updates that are much needed
SudoNull- has joined #gridcoin
<mrtrousers>
And why does the beacon has a cost?
<mrtrousers>
Its good for the network to have people joining
<customminer>
mrtrousers: The beacon has a cost because it's a transaction being broadcast on the network with extra data.
<customminer>
mrtrousers: Users can easily acquire a fraction of 1 grc, but if they don't even have 1 grc for solo they've got bigger problems.
<mrtrousers>
But shouldnt they be allowed in the network no matter the balance?

When your wallet advertises a beacon, the Gridcoin network knows of your existence. This info is then saved in the !superblock

But can you pool & solo with one wallet?
<alfabit>
so if you're solo mining you use your CPID, and on another machine you use the pool's cpid
<Mercosity>
But what about solo and pool on multiple mcs on one wallet?
<alfabit>
Openflames: you may be able to use the same wallet.dat file on 2 separate machines
<alfabit>
the only thing to note if using the same wallet on different machines is if you create a receive address on one it will not be on the other
<alfabit>
will cause headaches so IMO setup multiple wallets for each pool/solo
<Openflames>
Is it difficult to move the wallet's save location?
Emptybeerbottle has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]

alfabit the recieve address for payments from the pool is setup on your wallet and should be separate from any solo mining activities. You can set up multiple separate recieve addresses

<mrtrousers>

<mrtrousers>

I have most BOINC projects added via the usual !-command, e.g. !seti !rosetta and so on
<Openflames>
It's very useful
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
yes
<customminer>
mrtrousers: Did you install BOINC to a non-default location? Does the command 'list cpids' yield any details? Member of team gridcoin? Same email and cpid for all projects?
<mrtrousers>
Yes my projects show, all with team gridcoin
<mrtrousers>
theres lots of commands on that console

So is it true we have an options trader as dev?
<caraka>
good morning peeps
<Mercosity>
Yeah. Looked up problems with wu at 100% and found out that although the are shown @100% inBOINC Manager in fact they are not finished. Proof is close BM completely and reopen and the wu will show time still to go. So don't abort!
<caraka>
true. I think our second dev may also be interested in options

Title: GridCoin.co Pool (beta) (at pool.gridcoin.co)
<Openflames>
It should track your contribution to the pool on your profile there. If it's a different pool, it may work the same but I haven't used any others.
<radurock>
oh cool. I've just started two days ago and got like 30k credit on a job. From what I understand it takes a bit longer until I start earning anything right?
<radurock>
and the last contact tab seems not to update very often "08-07-2016 7:46:15 am ET" Whereas I've been mining non stop today
<Openflames>
I started 3 days ago, yeah. In the pool, your RaC is a monthly average I believe? Let me find that useful reddit post...
<radurock>
How quick did you start earning anything?
<Openflames>
What does it mean when a task reads "Postponed: VM Hypervisor failed to enter an online state in a timely fashion"
<Openflames>
Needs VirtualBox but it's not installed?
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
something with a vm, yes. so check if you have vbox or whatever it needs
<Openflames>
Cosmology@home wasn't listed as needing it, but guess so.

let me know if this assumption is right: I'll be earning POR per stake, so my chance of eraning POR goes up when I buy grc that stakes as a high amount, and my chance of earning POR goes down when I stake on a lower amount like a faucet deposit. I have rec'd 4 POR amounts today, and I am finally beginning to see amounts in my wallet in stake stat
<stevescoins>

<Openflames>
Alright, going to poof for a second
<stevescoins>
or maybe i should stake amount stake per stake "period"

good evening
<WhitesoxCrypto>
I've lost all of my connections on my wallet... anyone that can helo me trough the "unusual" proceedures, as all of the usuals, I0ve already been trough...
<mrtrousers>
mmm, do you have to sync again?
<WhitesoxCrypto>
hi MrControll
<WhitesoxCrypto>
mrtrousers:
<mrtrousers>
when that happened to my I resynced through the snapshot.
<WhitesoxCrypto>
I was fully synced untill I lost conns..
<mrtrousers>
!snapshot
<WhitesoxCrypto>
but.. I cannot re sync without connections..
<mrtrousers>
check you have the updated nodes in the config file
<mrtrousers>
!nodes
<WhitesoxCrypto>
checked already, and I added the missing ones..
<mrtrousers>
did you restart the wallet?
<WhitesoxCrypto>
several times..
<mrtrousers>
!snapshot
<mrtrousers>
with it you download the last snapshot of the blockchain, its signed, so you can trust it
<mrtrousers>
you will sync to 90someting percent, then i guess you will find nodes
<WhitesoxCrypto>
yeah, but connections are not thanks to the blockchain... blockchain is downloaded trough connections, no?
<mrtrousers>
which os do you run?
<WhitesoxCrypto>
ubuntu
<WhitesoxCrypto>
and I have a second wallet on a w7 machine which also is in the same state...
<mrtrousers>
yes, but through the snapshot you override that for a part of the chain and you download the last blocks
<WhitesoxCrypto>
and then I would still have no connections...
<WhitesoxCrypto>
dunno
<WhitesoxCrypto>
will try it then..
<mrtrousers>
i think you will get them
<WhitesoxCrypto>
I'll let you know if I do..
<WhitesoxCrypto>
thanks..

Openflames: Using windows?
<Openflames>
Yeah, w7
<Openflames>
Started 3 days ago seeing it as an opportunity to contribute to science Then found Gridcoin and wondered if it was time to learn about crypto currencies (and if I could make money by letting my computer do stuff)

So, my cpid starts with b6d but neural net stops at b69
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
do you see that cpid on your wallet UI ?
<Openflames>
yes
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
ok, that is very good
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
so, you just have to wait then
<Openflames>
Wait til superblock, so it can be added? Gotcha
<Openflames>
So, everything should be set up and working, not I just need to wait, huh?
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
yes, we checked, you are on boincstats, you have >100 RAC
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
your cpid shows
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
all fine things
<Erkan_Yilmaz>
and beaocn you sent yesterday
