<openbot> .
<openbot> whats the status of the project
<openbot> i was away for a while
<openbot> will read logs later
<openbot> also i got a terrible problem with internet can anybody help me a little
<openbot> its a wired connection'
<openbot> i guess all people here know a good deal
<openbot> if its too ot i ll ask somewhere else
<openbot> the problem is the router thing is on the pole and a cat5 goes to my room i can use internet fine but the isp got a login page that is at least bearable
<openbot> the problem is i got a ip assined so i need to manually configure everything which is terrible when plugging to other computers or alternate os
<openbot> horrible part is the isp wants to charge for a wifi router every month like renting it dosent matter if i buy a router or they provide one
<openbot> how do i get around this weird issue
cccnnjj has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<openbot> can i use a wired router and spit multiple cables from it most importantly will the use of a wired router eliminate the manual configuration needed to connect to the internet i.e plug the lan cable and it gets connected
<openbot> the reason to ask is i got no experience with routers and i ll need to buy one to test it
<openbot> or better i can set up a internet gateway on a spare laptop but a laptop consumes much more power than a router
<xman> openbot: Honestly I don't think your gonna get much help on here, your kinda talking to yourself. You may want to go to a linux irc chat instead. But you should be able to plug in a wireless or wired router in to what ever modem the isp gave you. That new router should give you the ability to create you own local network that the modem has no control over. You could even set up a internal wireless network for test first.
<openbot> i dont know which one is a sensible option a gateway or a wired router
<openbot> the isp gave me no mordem
<openbot> modem
<xman> what did they give you? How do you get onto the internet?
<openbot> name me a channel
<openbot> they gave me a cat5 cable
<openbot> which comes from the pole
<xman> from the wall?
<openbot> you see why i am going mad
louisdk has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<openbot> the wire comes from a pole which has a box
<xman> So all you have is a cat5 cable from the wall?
<openbot> no damm wall direct from a electric pole
louisdk has joined #neo900
<openbot> the box on the pole runs multiple cables to diffrent homes like mine
<xman> You should be able to plug a router into that cat5 and make your own local network.
<openbot> i know that
vakkov has joined #neo900
<xman> you could get an older router if cost is a issue, but be sure to get one that allows 3rd prty open source firmware.
<openbot> i want to know but will i need to configure my network on multiple machines or will it be plug and play
<xman> I see. Hmm, I thought you haven't tried that yet.
<openbot> na i didnt tried any router yet
<openbot> just tell me does a router allow to configure dns ip subnet mask and alike
<DocScrutinizer05> yes
<xman> yes
<openbot> wow
<openbot> thanks
<DocScrutinizer05> yw
<openbot> so whats the stats on the project
<DocScrutinizer05> see tmo
<openbot> yeah
<xman> openbot: It's not so hard for the basic stuff. Just a little searching will give you lots of guides. http://dotancohen.com/howto/linksyssetup.html
<openbot> do you really think i didnt search ? i got too confused so decided to ask here and actually got a answer
<xman> ^
louisdk has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<openbot> though i polluted the channel
<xman> openbot: :D
<xman> Well, you never know. Just trying to help
<openbot> yeah and you did help :)
<xman> np, good luck. Get some hardware and get hacking, you'll get it working.
<DocScrutinizer05> openbot: the router generally has a NAT which will convert from your "public" IP to the IP range of your LAN
<DocScrutinizer05> you configure the "internet" connection of router to use the IP you got assigned by provider. On LAN you do whatever you like
<openbot> yes and that is one of the this that got me confused
<DocScrutinizer05> router will do DHCP to provision IP to PCs in LAN
<DocScrutinizer05> your lan will typically be 192.168.x.y
jonsger has joined #neo900
<openbot> xman yes i should
<openbot> and for now i am trying to get around parell ports you know leds and alike its fun but lots and lots of reading
<DocScrutinizer05> when you get a linksys wrt54g, make sure you don't pay >10€ and you bet a powersupply with it
<xman> openbot: DocScrutinizer05 post some good info.
<openbot> DocScrutinizer05 i didnt get what you said
<DocScrutinizer05> you choose "set manual IP" instead of "get IP automatically" there
<Arch-TK> interesting router...
* Arch-TK has been looking for a router which doubles as a wap
<xman> openbot: what do you mean by "trying to get around parell ports"
hashcore has joined #neo900
<openbot> trying to use parell port to control leds next a relay
<openbot> i.e controling hardware with software as i call it
<openbot> xman
<openbot> thanks DocScrutinizer05
<xman> I see. Yeah that probably won't be needed once you get a router, if that for your networking.
<openbot> maybe
<openbot> electronics is cool
<openbot> but hard
<Arch-TK> DocScrutinizer05: do you know of anything good which goes cheap second hand which does dual band a [b] g n, or maybe even ac
<DocScrutinizer05> sorry nope
<Arch-TK> which I can put ddwrt on or something
<Arch-TK> oh well, it was worth a try.
<DocScrutinizer05> a is rare and 'expensive'
<bencoh> check openwrt/ddwrt wikis first
<Arch-TK> I've grown used to it, my laptop supports it and my ISP provided router supports it.
<Arch-TK> but the ISP provided router is locked down and I can't do half the things I would like to be able to do
<Arch-TK> one of the things is being able to customise the dhcp settings, I guess I could do that by just disabling dhcp and running a server from my 24/7 box.
<openbot> see i am not the only one who is going crazy
<DocScrutinizer05> you're the only one who is not _going_ crazy ;-)
<openbot> god dosent help us we need to help owerselves
<xman> heh, I had issue too. until I got a router which you can update the firmware with tomato or wddwrt
<openbot> lol DocScrutinizer05
<DocScrutinizer05> I got a wrt54g (surprise, eh?) with ddwrt on it. Recently I kicked it out just because I wanted a monster like fritzbox7490
<DocScrutinizer05> it did a great job for years though
<xman> I went from isp, semi crap (it had some custom abilities) to an asus ac :). Long term investment.
<openbot> isp's are terrible all over the world i feel like now
<DocScrutinizer05> yes
<DocScrutinizer05> on a slightly bright side: in Germany ISPs must not force locked down proprietary routers on their customers anymore, in a few months
<openbot> lets burn them with fire :D
<bencoh> DocScrutinizer05: wow
<DocScrutinizer05> finally the end of nasty evil TR69
<DocScrutinizer05> I mean, how much nastier could it get? ISP forcing WLAN config on me
<DocScrutinizer05> (not on *me* obviously)
<DocScrutinizer05> but TR69 can do that, plus other nasty things
<xman> DocScrutinizer05: Please don't tempt the nasty gods …lol
<DocScrutinizer05> openbot: good luck! @everyone: bbl o/
<xman> DocScrutinizer05: l8tr

<openbot> alieans and their langagues
<DocScrutinizer05> set's GERRRMANN, fuuul
<DocScrutinizer05> notably the english wiki has no such paragraph
<openbot> one a sidenote how do you people find related content on the internet in diffrent langagues
<DocScrutinizer05> hmmm, I search for the generic term, here TR-059
<openbot> donknow i never find
<openbot> or rarely
<openbot> as i said all in english
<DocScrutinizer05> when I want to force e.g. German, I add a very unspecific but typically german term to the searcj string
<openbot> no wait one is in german too
<DocScrutinizer05> no, third hit is the german wiki
<DocScrutinizer05> actually second valid hit, excluding the AD at top
<openbot> well you know german then what about russian then
<DocScrutinizer05> I never searched for russian sites since I dunno russian
<openbot> the point is there are big countries with lots of intelligent people how to find what they write
<DocScrutinizer05> I guess your browser's primary default language makes a whole lot of difference on google too
<openbot> there are translators to decrypt
<openbot> maybe
<DocScrutinizer05> I get lots of english hits even on google.de
<openbot> you use kde
<DocScrutinizer05> I'm quite sure in a browser with default german setting I'd get most german hits
<openbot> i got open suse as you people sugested long ago and i must say a thinkpad and opensuse is my thing
<openbot> only god knows why i got vaios and hp's in first place
<openbot> awsome thing is linux rarely crashes on me
<openbot> terible thing is i still need windows on a dual boot for some propetiary things my institution prescribes
<openbot> still not comfortable with vm's
<openbot> DocScrutinizer05 do you use a ssd or a hdd
<DocScrutinizer05> both
<DocScrutinizer05> google looking for browser languge setting confirmed
<DocScrutinizer05> openbot: so to get russian results, set your browser's language to russian
<openbot> humm i got a ssd and seriously my com become supercomputer i.e pure black magic
<DocScrutinizer05> yes
<openbot> thats a good idea
<DocScrutinizer05> I got 150GB SSD and a 1TB HDD
<DocScrutinizer05> SSD for system and scratch (like /tmp etc), HDD for /home
<openbot> i got a 160gb ssd its expensive for me but it made a night and day diffrence
<DocScrutinizer05> yes
<DocScrutinizer05> same here
<openbot> need to setup my thinkpad like that but i was worring about increased power consumption on a laptop
<DocScrutinizer05> nah, I guess a SSD uses even less thanb a HDD
<openbot> na i mean both installed on a laptop
<DocScrutinizer05> after all it's completely idle when idling
<openbot> yes ssd gives a little extra uptime
<jonsger> openbot: use duckduckgo :)
<DocScrutinizer05> aah, well I wouldn't worry. If you laptop has provisioning for two HDD it will be fine with one HDD and a SSD
louisdk has joined #neo900
<openbot> it dosent get hot too bad part is i dont get to make omletes anymore :D
<openbot> what do you mean ?
<DocScrutinizer05> you can't mount HDD *and* SSD to a laptop that supports one one storage device
<openbot> oh shit only one is bootable right
<openbot> need to put in and check
<DocScrutinizer05> so if your laptop supports two storage devices, it will be fine with HDD+SSd
<DocScrutinizer05> after all it got designed for 2* HDD to start with
<DocScrutinizer05> cya
<openbot> buy
<openbot> na bye
<openbot> jonsger i check
<openbot> cya
hashcore has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<openbot> my god i better read on routers than a tr609 or a fritz box
<openbot> they are monsters nad might consume me
<DocScrutinizer05> TR-069 is a protocol to configure routers remotely
<DocScrutinizer05> you should by all means disable it
<DocScrutinizer05> in your router
<DocScrutinizer05> as soon as you did that, there's nothing more to know about it
