<andrewvos> shevy: You must be trolling
<shevy> why?
<shevy> e vs. puts, saves 3 more characters
<shevy> though not when one has to define the alias in that oneliner of course
<theoros> in one-liners or in .. libraries?
<shevy> okok
<shevy> I dont really use one liners
<shevy> I define methods in a file, that are in essence one liners, and call those methods from the commandline
<theoros> don't like where this is going, to be honest
<shevy> ruby -r /path/to/my_methods.rb -r /another/path/to/my_modules.rb -e
<shevy> followed by the function name
<shevy> uhm
<shevy> method name
<andrewvos> shevy: WHYYYYYYYYY????
<shevy> what why
<shevy> it's trivial to call with aliases
<confounds> shevy: why not lengthen it instead, so instead of puts say putstring
<andrewvos> You know you can make ruby scripts right?
<shevy> confounds that does not bring any advantage
roha [roha!~phelot@84-75-49-50.dclient.hispeed.ch] has joined #ruby-lang
<shevy> andrewvos for like 3 lines in one method I dont really make a new file
<confounds> shevy: no, but it's funny
<shevy> when they tend to get used a lot, with more important things, they get their own file and own class usually
<confounds> and in a way that's an advantage in itself
<shevy> aha

<reasonedink> Has it recently become necessary to do something special so that Heroku properly finds the right location of the "views" directory?
<reasonedink> I've followed a guide to the T, and indeed the code works on my machine.

<reasonedink> Errno::ENOENT - No such file or directory - /app/<internal:lib/rubygems/views/index.erb
<reasonedink> Why is it looking for the views in the rubygems directory?
<rue> That doesn't seem to be a valid path
<reasonedink> No, certainly not.
<reasonedink> It's in the root of my app.
<reasonedink> I'm sure it has to do with my config telling Heroku to look in the wrong place, but I've changed nothing from the tutorial I followed.
<rue> I've no idea, really, but check you don't have that "internal" anywhere in your tree at least
<ryanf> you can't configure rails to look in the wrong place for views. are you sure the version that is deployed to heroku is the same as the one that's working locally?
<ryanf> oh
<ryanf> you might want to mention that you are talking about sinatra
<reasonedink> Oh.
<reasonedink> Heh, yeah... sorry.
<reasonedink> I presume something more needs to go into config.ru to tell it where to properly look for views?
<ryanf> probably not config.ru, but I don't really know anything about sinatra
<ryanf> did you ask in #sinatra?
<reasonedink> On it.
<reasonedink> Thank you.

<ryanf> I guess it shouldn't matter, never mind
<ryanf> you could try set :app_file, __FILE__ at the top of your app.rb and see if that helps
<ryanf> eh don't bother, I don't know why it would actually
<ryanf> just brainstorming here.
<reasonedink> I think it must have something to do with the way Bundler loads everything.

<deryldoucette> utf8 was giving me a serious headache here with irssi. until i added each individual channel to /recode add utf-8 while each channel was focused. everytime i detached and reattached i lost the ability to display utf. fixed now with the recode per-channel additions.
darkf [darkf!~darkf_dix@unaffiliated/darkf] has joined #ruby-lang
<deryldoucette> wasn't clear that was a requirement from the docs. terminal and any ruby scripts would display them fine, but not screened irssi sessions. took forever to figure out the issue.
<lianj> just make sure your shell is utf8 then you dont have to touch irssi or anything
<deryldoucette> not true. i had all that done. shell was set up for utf8, terminal was set up for utf8, term_charset in irssi was utf8, screen was started with -U, ssh -t blah@blah screen -U -dr <session_name> was used, etc
<deryldoucette> irssi was the only one that, once you detached and reattached, would not display utf8 correctly. it *only* happened after a detach / reattach

<deryldoucette> did i can it? no if you meant did i delete it. even doing /exec printenv | grep -i lc_ showed them all set, my local Terminal.app is set to utf8, my local shell and the remote shell have the LC_* all set, screen was started with -U, the reconnection was done with -U -dr, all related recode and terminal settings within irssi itself were set for utf8. basically irssi was not applying recode to the channels until i set /recode add UTF-8 ...
<deryldoucette> ... for each individual channel. only then did it work after dtach/rtach

<andrewvos> No more caps
<manveru> i thought you can just copy existing instances?
<andrewvos> And then sometimes it just doesn't connect to your vm. It. Just. Doesn't. Connect.

<manveru> proxwhat?
<burgestrand> Had a similar issue andrewvos described. It ran the provisioning scripts… then just stopped.
<burgestrand> Hung. Nothing happened.
<burgestrand> Had to start over four times before it ran all the way through. :x
<manveru> bougyman: probably because you haven't written about it? :)
<bougyman> it's a great mass-deployment vm container system.
<burgestrand> Connection thingy really annoying, but apart from that it’s nice. :)
<andrewvos> burgestrand: And because it take so long it can ruin your day.
<bougyman> well that's because virtualizing voice is stupid, and we're usually working with voice :)
<manveru> right
<RickHull> voice?
<burgestrand> andrewvos: yeah, I just did it as an experiment and only lost five hours so no harm done. Not doing it again.
<bougyman> RickHull: freeswitch, telephony
<manveru> i'd love it for stuff like tcc though
<andrewvos> Anyway though. Vagrant is the best there is so use it.
<manveru> lol
<shevy> 5 HOURS!
<RickHull> what pressure does voice put on virt systems?
<bougyman> i'd never seen vagrant, have no idea on its merits or comparison to proxmox.
<bougyman> sun vbox just scares me a bit.

<andrewvos> Disregard yaml, use JSON.

michael_mbp [michael_mbp!~Marin@112.134.196.0] has joined #ruby-lang
<Defusal> there are many ways of course
<Defusal> regex would just be the most convenient
<Defusal> as i can put the regex into the config yaml file
<manveru> >> %w[foo_bar bar foo].map{|s| s[/(?:_(?<m>.+)|(?<m>[^_]+))$/, :m] }
<manveru> => ["bar", "bar", "foo"]
<Defusal> since the matching will vary with instances

<manveru> same goes for regex, of course
<Defusal> heh
<drbrain> YAML, Marshal, JSON… you need to be careful with how you represent objects no matter the serialization format
<Defusal> well its a lot easier to use regex in the config, than have to implement code for each option in the config
<drbrain> if you find out you got it wrong it can be incredibly painful to undo your error
<Defusal> either way, a bunch of instances need to behave differently
<Defusal> sure, but whos representing objects drbrain
<Defusal> this is simple text
<Defusal> technically a String object instance in ruby
<Defusal> but you get my point
<manveru> well, i argue for having no config files that aren't ruby
<manveru> serialization is for persistance and transport
<Defusal> config files can be easily edited by users
<Defusal> i use them for passwords, hostnames, ips, etc
<manveru> if they know the syntax and follow the rules
<Defusal> and templates
<Defusal> yaml is a lot easier to follow than ruby
<Defusal> for someone that doesnt know anything
<manveru> why does someone who doesn't know anything edit a text file?
<Defusal> to change the some ips or passwords
<Defusal> one day ill make a web interface for editing config and templates, but that is far from a priority
