<cubeast> Is NAND installation for a A20 device any different for mainline kernel than the sunxi 3.4 kernel?

<plaes> cubeast: NAND support is not yet available in mainline
<plaes> *fully* available
<cubeast> so that means a sd-card
<cubeast> which u-boot should I go for for either kernel? Is the mainline u-boot good for both (3.4 and mainline kernel)?
ojn has joined #linux-sunxi
<plaes> mainline u-boot
<plaes> and nand booting is currently being discussed
<plaes> because there are some things that have been done before
<cubeast> And from what I've read from the wiki, direct booting off a SATA disk is not supported
<plaes> yes, unfortunately
<cubeast> you need to have u-boot on nand or sd-card
<cubeast> ok that shouldn't be a problem
<plaes> in case you are adventureous, the NAND boot patches work
arnd has joined #linux-sunxi
<oliv3r> yeah our engineer is testing them to see if he can improve boot times
<oliv3r> but so far, it works great
<cubeast> oooh nice
hansg has joined #linux-sunxi
<philippe_fouquet> I try the RSpliet path It loke like work when I boot I FEL mode
<philippe_fouquet> but I don't know how I can flast it on nand for direct boot
<philippe_fouquet> At first view the writing fail in first sector
<RSpliet> philippe_fouquet: I have a little script that, from a working Linux with MTD support (Boris' kernel) and given a "hwpack" with the right U-boot, kernel and rootfs inside, will set up the nand chip
<RSpliet> I'll see if I can share it with you somehow later today
<RSpliet> (not yet in the office)
<RSpliet> it will require you to manually create the hwpack
hansg has quit [Client Quit]
<philippe_fouquet> RSpliet: for that you use whitch kernel I kep my from : https://github.com/linux-sunxi/linux-sunxi.git (branch sunxi-next) that is the good one?
<RSpliet> you probably want Hans' tree for that, so you can define your NAND partitions a bit more elaborate

<RSpliet> from "copyData()" and "copyUbootSpl()" you can derive what the hwpack should look like
mrnuke has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<RSpliet> the kernel tree I'd recommend is on https://github.com/jwrdegoede/linux-sunxi/tree/sunxi-nand-experiment
<RSpliet> make sure to enable the nand controller in your particular DTS and define the right partitions (most likely a copy/paste from the cubietruck defs)
<philippe_fouquet> great thanks RSpliet I try that now

<rellla> it's a mess, that there is no git history in allwinner sdks...

<rellla> got an h3 and can't decide where to start from.
<wens> rellla: i have some basics, though no progress on the software side
<rellla> wens: can i help somehow?
<wens> one thing is there is no otg port, the otg controller is wired as host mode only :(
<wens> kinda rules out FEL mode or fastboot
<wens> i planned to write an email about it, but my desktop LCD broke down yesterday
<wens> fyi, uart is the pins next to the wifi module
<wens> with the ports facing up, left 2 pins are ground, middle one is 3.3v or 5v, right 2 are rx and tx
<wens> but the bundled software uses mmc0 pinmux for uart0
<rellla> wens: thanks, i'll first try to get something out of it with a ready made image ...

<RSpliet> bbrezillon: where would you like RFCs?
<RSpliet> for sunxi_nand in Linux
<RSpliet> MTD ML, personal e-mail?
<bbrezillon> RSpliet: send it to both, actually also add Brian Norris (the MTD maintainer)
<paulk-collins> I'm looking to use the cubieboard2's SPI connector to flash a laptop's BIOS (with coreboot)
<paulk-collins> is mainline good for that or should I instead use 3.4 due to DMA-related concerns?
<bbrezillon> and if this is about the MTD part stuff, also add Richard Weinberger
<bbrezillon> (derRichard on the #mtd channel)
<RSpliet> it's only for sunxi-nand
<mripard> RSpliet: whatever get_maintainer returns ?
<bbrezillon> okay, then me, the MTD maintainers and the MTD ML
<bbrezillon> pretty much what get_maintainers.pl returns
<bbrezillon> and of course you can add the linux-sunxi ML

<Kasreyn> "GPT: last_usable_lba incorrect: 15D50A38E > 5D50A3B0" is printed on u-boot "scsi part" (version is 2014.10+dfsg1-5).. scsi scan reports 746.5GB capacity on a drive that is 3TB.. can u-boot not discover partitions on 3TB drives?

<NiteHawk> that's my impression. 15D50A38E xor 5D50A3B0 = 10000003E - and that bit 32 might have gotten truncated. LBA 2**32 and 512-byte sectors matches the 2TB boundary...
<Kasreyn> ok.. i made a 50GB partition at the beginning of the drive..
<Kasreyn> debian jessie installer did it.. are you saying something went wrong?
<NiteHawk> no, but you didn't solve anything either. you were talking about a problem in u-boot, that specific issue might go away as soon as you boot the actual os/kernel
<Kasreyn> right but i can't boot actual kernel because of it
<NiteHawk> hmm... i'd expect you need a separate boot partition at the start of the disk that's small enough to be properly recognized by u-boot
<Kasreyn> scsi part also says this: "GUID Partition Table Header signature is wrong:0xF01EC36BE03B001A != 0x5452415020494645"
<NiteHawk> or does it fail to recognize/parse any partition table?
<Kasreyn> print_part_efi: *** ERROR: Invalid GPT ***
<Kasreyn> print_part_efi: *** ERROR: Invalid Backup GPT ***
<NiteHawk> yes, GPT has a backup copy at the end of the disk - which u-boot probably fails to access :/
<Kasreyn> but this should at least mean i have a u-boot with GPT compiled in..
<Kasreyn> it's the binary for BPi available in jessie ..
<NiteHawk> searching around a bit points to a CONFIG_SYS_64BIT_LBA setting, and some LBA patches for u-boot
<Kasreyn> ah ok.. i'll see if i can find those and apply then..
<NiteHawk> well, the GPT (format) support is likely independent of the LBA (sector) addressing per se
<Kasreyn> but i need it to support HDDs larger than 2TB if i understand things correctly..
gianMOD has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

<NiteHawk> there's something in the README about it. you need either CONFIG_LBA48 or CONFIG_SYS_64BIT_LBA for disks > 2.1TB
<Kasreyn> ok thanks NiteHawk
<NiteHawk> and i don't immediately see those defined for sunxi / Bananapi_defconfig - so CONFIG_LAB48 might be a good starting point
<Kasreyn> i added CONFIG_LBA48=y and CONFIG_SYS_64BIT_LBA=y to Bananapi_defconfig.. ii'll report results :)
<Kasreyn> hmm.. capacity is still 746.5GB..
<Kasreyn> same error(s)
<NiteHawk> ok, your error "last_usable_lba incorrect" originates from disk/part_efi.c - there's another hint
<NiteHawk> * NOTE:
<NiteHawk> * when CONFIG_SYS_64BIT_LBA is not defined, lbaint_t is 32 bits; this
<NiteHawk> * limits the maximum size of addressable storage to < 2 Terra Bytes
<NiteHawk> */
<NiteHawk> maybe try to add CONFIG_SYS_EXTRA_OPTIONS="SYS_64BIT_LBA" to Bananapi_defconfig
<NiteHawk> that should translate to CONFIG_SYS_64BIT_LBA via the build system

<Kasreyn> had to download linaro bare-metal toolchain to get it compiled (my computer is still on wheezy)
<NiteHawk> great. after a closer look at part_efi.c i think it's CONFIG_SYS_64BIT_LBA (redefining lbaint_t) that solves your problem
<Kasreyn> scsi scan now detects the entire capacity of the drive and i can see partitions
lerc has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Kasreyn> (why isn't debian jessie doing this)
<NiteHawk> we should probably make sure to get that CONFIG_SYS_64BIT_LBA into Bananapi_defconfig or sunxi-common.h ...
<NiteHawk> you're again mixing u-boot with kernel/os ?
<Kasreyn> depends what you mean? i'm no longer using jessie u-boot since it can't handle big HDDs..
<Kasreyn> so the plan now is to use u-boot 2014.10 + debian jessie install
ricardocrudo has joined #linux-sunxi
<NiteHawk> ah, ok - i wasn't aware of that "jessie u-boot". and yes, you need to replace your u-boot with a fixed one to avoid this problem
<Kasreyn> u-boot 2014.10 (CONFIG_SYS_64BIT_LBA mod) + debian jessie
<NiteHawk> probably noone tried it with a >2TB hard disk before ;)
<Kasreyn> someone had to be the first..
<Kasreyn> a BPi with external big HDD.. that just made sense to me..
<NiteHawk> that's a sata disk in your case, or was that usb?
<Kasreyn> yes i managed to find a eSATA enclosure.. who would have thunk it they still make those
<NiteHawk> thought so. well, i'm glad we got that solved :)
