but /usr/share/keymaps seems to be empty. That's probably the issue.

With the cubieboard, is it possible to 'brick' the board to the point that you can't programm anything anymore?
<AE7IK>
E.g. I've got some linux images, and if for some reason I screw things up (power goes out, etc), is the hardware capable of programming even if everything in the NAND flash is corrupt?

What would be the best debian distro to use with the Cubie2?
TheSeven has joined #cubieboard
<n01>
debian _is_ a distro
<Vanfanel>
n01: I know, sorry. I mean "bootable image" :)
<wolfy>
pure debian there are only 2 that i know of. cubian and cubieez
<Vanfanel>
cubian is... well, irritating, to say the least

Any idea why cubian boots to tty6 ????
wickwire has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Vanfanel>
And even if I specify console=tty0 on uEnv.txt, it will still boot to tty with no boot messages to tty0 or tty1 :(
<Vanfanel>
This Cubian thing is broken beyond my patience
<Vanfanel>
Any (working) alternatives, please??
<Night-Shade>
I have rolled my own pure debian
<Night-Shade>
with debootstrap and qemu
<Night-Shade>
it's very simple
<Night-Shade>
depends how conformable you are with the allwinner boot process
<Vanfanel>
Night-Shade: I know it must me easy, but it's expected to have a somewhat working bootable image when one gets a new board, don't you think? :P
<Vanfanel>
Allwinner boot process is based around the u-boot thing I used in the (now abandoned) Pandaboard
<Vanfanel>
right?
<Night-Shade>
correct
Cpt-Oblivious has joined #cubieboard
tinti has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<Vanfanel>
so what did you do? You need a rootfs (I believe you must have used a debian armhf v7 or whatever it's name is)
<Night-Shade>
basic process is: 1. build rootfs on normal x86 machine with debootstrap, 2. build bootable SD card, 3. copy debian rootfs onto the card
<Vanfanel>
and a boot partition
<Night-Shade>
strictly you don't need a boot partition any more
<Night-Shade>
with the newer versions of u-boot
wolfy has quit [Read error: Connection timed out]
<Vanfanel>
oh, will it boot from an EXT4 partition, then?
<Night-Shade>
yes but I have one for compatablity
<Night-Shade>
my cubietruck boots off and SD card and then has the rootfs on a SATA SSD
<Vanfanel>
what does that debootstrap thing do? A rootfs should be simply decompressed to an EXT4 partition
<Vanfanel>
why do I need debootstrap?
<Night-Shade>
a rootfs isn't just an image
<Night-Shade>
it's a bunch of files that make up /
<Night-Shade>
you can send it out as an image of a filesystem
<Night-Shade>
which people do
<Night-Shade>
or you can just build up that directory full of files with debootstrap
<Night-Shade>
and then copy them with rsync
<Night-Shade>
I have a pile of notes I need to turn into a blog post about this over the weekend

Is it possible to brick a cubieboard?
<AE7IK>
Using the livewhatever program you can download from cubieboard.org?
<AE7IK>
I downloaded some of the images, just want to make sure that if i screw something up, it's easy enough to redo.
<AE7IK>
Since I'm planning on programming the nand flash.
<Night-Shade>
as far as I can understand fro the wiki's they are unbrickable
<Vanfanel>
Night-Shade: so, what's wrong if I just dd the rootfs to a 1MB ext4 partition by device name? It should work :)
<Night-Shade>
there is a very basic firststage bootload burnt into the SoC
<Night-Shade>
Vanfanel: I think you are thinking of bootfs
<Vanfanel>
nope: I'm talking about rootfs
<Vanfanel>
I could create a very small whatever-fs type partition AFTER the boot partition
tinti has quit [Excess Flood]
<Night-Shade>
yes but you need to have some programs in there to run
<Vanfanel>
so I get, let's say, /dev/sdb2 when I mount that microSD on my GNU/Linux laptop
<Vanfanel>
no, listen :D
R430R has joined #cubieboard
<Vanfanel>
Then I simply do dd if=rootfs.img of=/dev/sdb2
<Night-Shade>
yes but you need that rootfs
<Night-Shade>
that works if you have a rootfs built or downloaded
<Vanfanel>
Night-Shade: I'm using Linux right now, my laptop has Linux
<Vanfanel>
so
<Night-Shade>
arm or x86?
RA3OR has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<Vanfanel>
I should just go and download the debian armv7 rootfs
<Vanfanel>
and dd-it :)
<Vanfanel>
The laptop is x86
<Night-Shade>
yes if there is such a thing
<Vanfanel>
souch a what? a rootfs? Well, there must be a debian armv7 root fs

RA3OR has joined #cubieboard
<Vanfanel>
debian doesn't offer a rootfs, right?
<Night-Shade>
correct because they don't need to
<Night-Shade>
you can build rootfs filetree on another machine
<Vanfanel>
ok,ok
<Night-Shade>
which is what debootstrap is for
<Vanfanel>
Night-Shade: oh well... do you have a step by step guide in whatever format I can use?
<Vanfanel>

they are prepacked images but you need to have a serial or physical console on them as the firewall in them is broken until you do the first set of updates
<Night-Shade>
then it works properly

<Vanfanel>
Night-Shade: Any idea what configuration file is u-boot reading? I have uEnv.txt, script.scr...
<Vanfanel>
last question for today :P
<Night-Shade>
it's complex, the standard u-boot pulls in uEnv.txt
<Night-Shade>
and set variables from that, but you can cheat and put a command in there
<Night-Shade>
if you put in uenvcmd=<command to run> it will run that
<Night-Shade>
if you have a compiled u-boot script in boot.scr then it will run that before it pulls in the uEnv.txt
