I'm trying to construct a Proof of Elapsed Time using EC squarings.

Let's say I start with a value x which comes from some source with entropy, for instance representing the most recent block hash as an EC point. (see sipa's "Rolling UTXO set commitments" post for an algorithm using sha512)

After a series of repeated squarings, I have the values x, x^2, x^4, x^8, ... x^(2^n) and can compute any power t of x up to 2^n by representing t in binary and multiplying the relevant powers.

Now...how can I use that to create a proof that I have computed x^(2^n) and therefore the value n is a "time" parameter counting how much time has elapsed while doing the repeated squarings?

I'm stuck at how the verifier could possibly know t without repeating the computation, and that the prover isn't just presenting some random number that has nothing to do with x.

FYI this is to be used with #braidpool, which needs sub-second accuracy on timestamps, so miners just putting untrustable timestamps in their blocks really won't work.
