<kanzure> re: bip-johnjegutanis-efficient-block-relay-format ( https://gist.github.com/erasmospunk/23040383b7620b525df0 ) the argument for smaller blocks is not just bitcoin p2p consensus latency. weak blocks are still useful even if they don't resolve a big vs small block question.

<tulip> alpalp: no. a "full node" is talking about "fully validating", nothing about a node needs to have any contact with the Bitcoin P2P network. you can make one which syncs from binaries posted on Reddit if you really wanted to. it would still be fully validating. Bitcoin Core can run in "blocks only" mode which doesn't relay transactions, but it still fully validates everything.

<dcousens> In regards to SegWit, has anyone thought about how it might aid an authority perform a soft-fork for backdooring scriptSigs for transactions? This is a late-afternoon-beer thought
<dcousens> Though I guess its no different than before with OP codes, and miners would still have to mine it, so nvm
<andytoshi> dcousens: "perform a soft-fork" by coercing miners into censorship?
<dcousens> yeah
<dcousens> but not censorship, but straight up allowing someone else to spend?
<andytoshi> segwit does not make that any more or less possible
<andytoshi> actually creating invalid transactions (and assuming people won't check the sigs) would be a hardfork to all fully validating nodes
ThomasV has joined #bitcoin-wizards
<dcousens> yeah, you could do what i'm thinking of now with just a OP_NOP code
<dcousens> well actually, no

<Taek> I was thinking about subchains some more, and I decided that the idea of subchains has really missed the point for why weak blocks are advantageous
<Taek> weak blocks allow for DOS-protected, and anonymous preconsensus
<Taek> hand-waving and spherical cowing a bit, weak blocks give everyone a way to form a global mempool to draw from
<Taek> a weak block is a way to add transactions to a canonical mempool, and then if you have some explicit ordering for choosing transactions from the mempool everybody knows exactly what the next block is going to look like
<Taek> meaning the block can propagate as a single packet
<bsm117532> Taek: can you provide a ref for "subchains", I seemed to have missed that discussion.
<Taek> it's by Peter Rizun
<Taek> I don't think that a weak block orphan rate is important at all, there's no reason that weak blocks need to build on eachother or even be a chain - they could just as easily be a dag
<bsm117532> Yeah I was just gonna say my braid proposal is quite similar.
<Taek> yeah. I think it makes a lot more sense to braid weak blocks than it does to braid strong blocks
<Taek> you'd use weak blocks to declare the set of transactions which may be legal in the next block, and then the next block has a limited set of options. If there are few enough weak blocks, it'd probably be easy enough just to brute force all of the potential options
<bsm117532> By virtue of their higher difficulty, having strong blocks be *actual* siblings is a lot more rare. But as you lower the difficulty and increase the rate, you get more siblings and have to deal with it.
<Taek> Siblings don't matter because the conflicts can be handled by choosing the one with the higher fee, or if the fee is tied then you choose the lower hash, etc.
<Taek> you can RBF in the weak blocks, but you can't in the strong blocks
<bsm117532> In my definition siblings have no conflicts.
<bsm117532> If there are conflicts you go with higher work as usual.
<bsm117532> How are subchains different from p2pool?
<Taek> I think you could have soft-consensus rules to enforce weak blocks as well. Something like, a block won't be mined on by a miner if the weak blocks it draws from aren't visible to the miner, or don't have X weak confirmations (where weak blocks are allowed to confirm multiple other weak blocks, creating a dag/braid/whatever)
<Taek> I don't think subchains are super different from p2pool actually.
<bsm117532> It looks identical so far, but I've only been reading it for 5 minutes...
<Taek> at the bottom they mention iterated subchains (subchains within subchains), which resulted in a confusing thought for me - at what point is it bad for miners?
<Taek> and the answer seemed to be that high orphan rates would be happening in subchains in a damaging way. But I realized you don't have to care! if you allow weak blocks to confirm multiple other weak blocks, including weak blocks with conflicts, there are no consensus risks because it's only the strong blocks that need to have transactions that don't conflict
<bsm117532> Taek: I think that's the way p2pool works. The sharechain is really there just to measure relative hash power.
<Taek> which means you'd want to keep the weak-block throughput low enough that everyone could keep up overall, but you no longer need to care about the orphan rate
<bsm117532> p2pool's orphan rate only affects its measurement of hash rate, so you get a slightly worse measurement than if orphans didn't exist.
<bsm117532> As far as I understand...still haven't set up my p2pool node yet ;-)
<bsm117532> I had a thought about this the other day too: As miners become smaller, the variance hits them harder (you effectively get a worse measurement of their hash rate because they submit shares less often). So why not let them pick their own target and submit e.g. 10 hashes below a target of their choosing.
<bsm117532> e.g. it's possible to create constant variance (relative to profit) for all miners.
<Taek> because if the miners are small enough it really bloats the chain
<Taek> in p2pool you get blocks with hudreds or thousands of payouts
jcorgan|away is now known as jcorgan
<Taek> if all miners were mining at optimal variance, you might have 25% of the block just be miner payouts

<bsm117532> True but the smallest miners (those with just one share) have a payout but a lot of variance as to that payout frequency. You can in principle measure their hashrate better on the sharechain/braid/subchain but make their payouts less frequent.
<bsm117532> The threshold becomes a minimum-payout-value while not punishing small miners with extra variance.

<bsm117532> AdrianG: I've been trying to figure this out.
<bsm117532> AdrianG: I think it's a combination of (1) variance and (2) misconfigured cgminer.

<AdrianG> variance is a big problem.
<pigeons> its not a big problem
domwoe has joined #bitcoin-wizards
<bsm117532> Every time I ask this question I get a different answer... ;-)
<AdrianG> ok, it could be a big risk. if there is large variance - your equipment can easily underperform before it becomes outdated.
<AdrianG> thats a big cost to swallow.
<kanzure> i think you mean "difficulty gets adjusted, yo"
<AdrianG> why risk when you don't have to?
<kanzure> that's not variance
<AdrianG> kanzure: you could have a long bad streak with high variance
<kanzure> that's irrelevant. your concern is actually about difficulty adjustments in the upward direction.
<AdrianG> its both.

<AdrianG> long streaks are bad in either environment, but are particularly damaging with rising difficulty.
<kanzure> nope.... "your equipment can easily underperform before it becomes outdated" is impossible (and variance explains why), unless you are talking about technical reasons like device failure or poor programming or poor hardware implementation details.
<AdrianG> if there is even just a perception p2pool *could* have higher variance - nobody would even bother.
<TD-Linux> AdrianG, you also need to run a full node for p2pool
rusty has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<bsm117532> The second moment befuddles everyone. I think the variance comes down to perceptions. No one likes to see streaks without profit, for any reason.

<AdrianG> humans are very loss-averse.

<bsm117532> smaller miners have to wait a longer time to hit "expected profit" compared to larger miners.
<AdrianG> kanzure: seriously, do you deny that high variance is difficult to deal with, at least psychologically?
<bsm117532> TD-Linux: It seems to be just passing the right flag to cgminer and Antminers perform fine with p2pool (--submit-stale)
<kanzure> i am saying that you are wrong that "your equipment can easily underperform before it becomes outdated.". you can at most talk about high and low likelihood streaks.
domwoe has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<kanzure> and that, on average, the streaks are both positive and negative, perhaps even neutral (until you factor in difficulty adjustments)
<TD-Linux> bsm117532, yeah. I guess the "upgrade kit" would just be a rpi2 node with p2pool daemon preinstalled...

<bsm117532> TD-Linux: Yes, configuring a full node is also a hurdle. Anyway, I've not yet found any technical flaws in p2pool, though people are blaming it left and right for being worse than centralized pools.
<Taek> I know that at least at some points in history miners have been highly averse to variance, even when the payouts smooth out to +/- 1% over the course of 30 days. I don't know if modern miners are equally averse
<kanzure> AdrianG: absent difficulty adjustments? no.
bramc has quit [Quit: This computer has gone to sleep]
<kanzure> the only way you could claim that is if you also claim that you don't understand mining
