<richo> Heya. I bought an arm netbook off of alibaba, it's got an a10 chipset which seems reasoanbly well supported by sunxi. Multiple sources suggest it should boot from SD, but that's not been my experience
<rm> richo, interesting; I guess not many people have those
<rm> around here
<rm> richo, when you insert the SD card and reboot, does it not boot at all, or just boot into Android?
<richo> Basically, what should I be doing to help chase this down. I've got root inside the preinstalled android, but it can't mount he SD card
<richo> it just boots into android
<rm> which SD card images did you try?
<richo> would you recognise them from the filenames? the links are in my tab swarm
<richo> from googling so many variations
<rm> maybe
<richo> a10-debian-server-2gb.2013-04-11.img
<richo> a10_base-1.3.img
<rm> yeah that's mine
<rm> 1st one
<richo> Ah ok. Well, thanks!
<rm> so you can't mount the SD card even when in Android?
<richo> Nope, although that seems to be because it can't read the partition table
<rm> maybe the reader slot is defective?
<richo> if I read up on my mount-fu and manually give it the offset it'll work
<rm> hum
<richo> Hrm. I'll format the card exfat and see if I can copy some stuff over.
<richo> Wait, will it not work with low class cards?
<richo> I couldn't get anything good at short notice, so I grabbed a class 4 because it was better than nothing
<richo> but I've got some class 10's at home
<rm> should be no problem
<rm> try " dd if=/dev/sdcard bs=1M count=16 | md5sum "
<rm> and compare the outputs on your desktop PC and on the netbook
<richo> Good call
<rm> if you even have "dd" and "md5sum" there in Android :/
<richo> I wonder if it has a dd binary
<richo> haha, yeah. I may have to do a hilarious exfat dance to build out a userland
<rm> from what you say it looks like your netbook can't read the very first sectors of an SD card
<rm> the bootloader is there; also the partition table is there
<richo> yeah, I tested the img in a VM (I'm doing this on a mac >.<
<richo> and the image looks fine
<rm> maybe your VM doesn't write to an SDcard properly...
<richo> i did the dd on the mac
<richo> which does work, I've written rasp pi images before
<richo> I have dd but not md5*
<richo> let's hope xxd, failing that I have vim
<richo> ok, so without any obvious way of doing checksums
<richo> I'm eyeballing the data's representation in vim for the bits that have printable characters
<richo> it looks about right.. so I guess the netbook can read from the start of the card... wait
<richo> I read from mmcblk0p1 on the netbook and the start of the image on the mac
<richo> I'll check that p1 is actually the start of the disk
<richo> yeah, by my ghetto eyeball they're the same
<richo> I'll see about getting an actual md5 or shasum binary onto the machine
<rm> you should look at mmcblk0
<rm> not p1
<rm> because p1 is already the first partition
<rm> and the bootloader is placed before it
<richo> It seems that the image starts in p1
<richo> I'll double check I didn't....
<richo> Oh god
<richo> I just realised what I did
<richo> Urgh. sorry dude
<richo> I'll try this again without noobery and see what happens :)
<richo> Out of curiosity, should I be expecting this to start X or show anything on the screen, or do I need to sort out some network gear?
<rm> with <richo> a10-debian-server-2gb.2013-04-11.img <- it won't show anything on screen
<rm> it will start a DHCP client on wired ethernet, the netbook has it, no?
<richo> Yup, it does.
<richo> I think I saw the ssh uname/pw somewhere
<richo> Thanks :)
<richo> rm: I have a blank screen, which I presume means it's doing something. Thanks for your help!
<richo> Does the image have xinit/startx and does it try to start a tty? I'm feeling lucky enough to attempt to shift by feel
cajg has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
<rm> no, the kernel in the a10-debian-server has no support for any graphics
<rm> to use the RAM that would be otherwise reserved for it

<richo> hello again
<richo> How would I determine absolutely which platform this netbook is (cubieboard, mk802II etc) from inside android? (Can I?)
<Triffid_Hunter> richo: not sure you can.. might be possible to evaluate the peripherals and check against a known list
<richo> I don't suppose you'd know of a good known list? (Sorry, I've been at this exactly 4 hours)
<Triffid_Hunter> nope, never looked
<richo> Thanks anyway, I'll see what I can find
tinti has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<richo> It's exactly the one in this video
<L84Supper> we got one last year, pretty awful design
<richo> L84Supper: I think so. The video on that page is refusing to play :/
<L84Supper> you have to try a few times to get it to play
<richo> Works in chrome, yeah it's that one
<L84Supper> it's a common enclosure that some oem's use for really cheap arm netbooks
<richo> Mine seems to be a little higher specced (1.5ghz)
<L84Supper> if it's a10 it's 1GHz
<richo> Hrm, you're right
<richo> My bad
<L84Supper> the trackpad is really bad
<richo> yeah it is
<richo> but, it was dirt cheap and basically disposable
<richo> do you know if there's open source work to get the display working on this hardware?
<L84Supper> for $5 more in materials it could be much better
<richo> I was basically hoping to have something to dick with on the train
fossxplorer has joined #arm-netbook
<L84Supper> display working? what's not working?
<richo> Well, I want to wedge linux onto it
<richo> I tried rm's a10-server image, but it didn't light up the nic, so I guess there's no support for the ethernet interface
<richo> I've beenthrough most of that already. Should I be building a kernel from the sunxi sources and installing it into an existing usreland?
<richo> I'm not really sure where to start with this, honestly.
<L84Supper> #cubieboard is where most have gone to with know-how on the a10
<L84Supper> this has become a faith based channel :)
<richo> Aha, thankyou anyway
<richo> I'll try there

<eebrah> If you do not like the ROM you are using the rooting won't really help
<eebrah> maybe try some custom ROMS like rockcreamSandwich or CyanogenMod for rockchip?
<eebrah> you need a windows tool [ RKTools.exe ] for flashing a ROM onto the tablet/miniPC
<eebrah> the guys at slatedroid usually have links to something recent
<wumpus> at least for flashing rk2918 there's also a linux tool
<eebrah> development on RK3066 seems to have slowed down .... alot
<eebrah> the linux port [ picuntu ] hasn't seen progress in a while
<eebrah> the CM and Rockcreamsandwich ROMS i'm getting are months old
<eebrah> I ended up going back to the manufacturer's ROM when they came out with an update
