<slapin_nb> I'm trying to make differential pair in Kicad http://ossfans.org/difp.png

<lkcl__> slapin: use PADS. or even Eagle. simple as that. or write the c++ yourself.
bsdfox has joined #arm-netbook
<slapin> lkcl__: what is PADS?
<lkcl__> slapin: mentor graphics - PADS 9.3
<lkcl__> ok, 9.5 i think's the latest version

<lkcl__> i just... i decided quite some time ago after using kicad that i was not going to fuck around waiting for free software to catch up with the professional level that's actually required to reliably develop high-speed PCBs
<buZz> great attitude
<lkcl__> i can make a ton of money first.... *and then* fund kicad or what the fuck ever
<lkcl__> buZz: thank you. it's a simple choice. kicad doesn't cut it, therefore don't use it.
<lkcl__> the alternative is: sit around "learning" for months on end how to manually do e.g. differential pairs
<lkcl__> by hand
<lkcl__> when you can in anything *other* than amateur-level PCB routing software set in the Design Rules "these two signals shall be routed together, by a distance of N mil"
<slapin> lkcl__: any pointers on doing differential pairs by hand?
<lkcl__> and save yourself a fuck of a lot of wasted time and effort.
<lkcl__> slapin: yes.
* slapin does have eagle 5.x license and it can't do differential pairs, and I don't want to upgrade :-P
<lkcl__> a) design and place the components so that you *do not* have to do any layer changes
<lkcl__> that there are no other components in the way
<lkcl__> and that you can make the routing as dead-straight as possible
<lkcl__> like, "line the components up exactly" so they're on the level.
<lkcl__> the other thing you have to bear in mind is that R.F. frequency level signals don't like going round corners :)
<lkcl__> that's the reason you don't see right-angles on differential pairs
<lkcl__> because the signal just... keeps.... going.... :)
<lkcl__> so, turn corners as infrequently as you can.
<lkcl__> the only other thing i can think of is: write your own python program to add the 2nd trace to the kicad files (directly)
<lkcl__> for example links to kipy
<slapin> lkcl__: If only I found the format description
<slapin> lkcl__: there are things like wcalc.sf.net
<slapin> lkcl__: dunno if I can use these...
<lkcl__> oh right - you're concerned about the electrical characteristics of the differential pairs?
<lkcl__> ah that's a bit beyond me :)
<slapin> lkcl__: probably not then
<slapin> lkcl__: anyway, kipy doesn't know about pcb format it seems, so I need to find format documentation to write scripts
<lkcl__> nnfh.
<lkcl__> kicad is supposed to have a python interface now
<slapin> well, only if Kicad had trace length tool, that'd be almost enough for tracing differential pairs...
<lkcl__> awesome!
<slapin> lkcl__: testing version; but it diesn't like my multipart .libs
<lkcl__> deep joy.
<lkcl__> ah yes - i had issues with that (on the debian version).
<lkcl__> i re-ordered the parts and the problem went away.
<lkcl__> actually what i did was maintain the library parts *BY HAND*
<lkcl__> using vi
<lkcl__> is that what you're seeing?
<lkcl__> that if you edit a part, it fucks up?
<lkcl__> ok - i gotta go.
<slapin> lkcl__: not only on edit, but yes, slao it fails to select appropriate part; stable works fine (from bzr stable branch)
<slapin> lkcl__: thanks a lot for info
