<calris_> I'm looking for a dual ethernet SBC to run as a Linux router / firewall (like a dual-port cubieboard or Raspberry Pi)
<calris_> Anyone know of such a beast?
aesok has quit [Quit: Ухожу я от вас (xchat 2.4.5 или старше)]
<roxfan> just get a router then?
<calris_> roxfan: most router don't have independent ethernet ports - they have an inbuild switch
<roxfan> i'm sure you can find one with separate ports
<ganbold_> routerstation pro :)
<roxfan> will likely be easier and cheaper too
<rm> eth0 is connected to a switch for the 4 LAN ports
<rm> eth1 is the WAN port

<ManoftheSea> What's wrong with a router board that has the switch? Usually, you can get it to tag based on incoming port, thus almost like 4 seperate ports.
<calris_> MonoftheSea: Can they be exposed as seperate /dev/eth devices?
<calris_> s/MonoftheSea/ManoftheSea
<ManoftheSea> calris: uh, I don't know how to expose normal ethernet cards as /dev/eth devices. However, I believe that the different 802.11q tags show up as "different" ethN:X devices.
<ManoftheSea> or ethN.X, I forget the exact labeling.
<ManoftheSea> yeah, eth0.1
<calris_> Hmmm, food for thought...
<calris_> I did just want something to go between the home wired network and the ADSL router, but I forgot about wireless
<calris_> So I need something with wireless

<troulouliou_dev> hi what it the best solution for a cheap linux arm netbook ?
<lkcl> calris: get a pc-engines alix6f2. they're f*****g awesome.
nomadic has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<lkcl> it has MiniPCIe *and* MiniPCI (Type III) slots. so you can put a 3G Modem into the MiniPCIe slot (i'm testing with a Telit HE910) and an Atheros WIFI card into the MiniPCI Type III slot
<lkcl> there's a whole stack of people selling them, pricing is around £100.
<lkcl> there's cases for £2.99 as well :)
<lkcl> oh and the best bit? because it's an x86 PC, it just... boots.... up... and.... runs.
<lkcl> no fucking about compiling or cross-compiling the linux kernel
<lkcl> just take any x86 gnu/linux distro that has a 486 kernel available, and go.
<lkcl> i PXE-netbooted one using the debian netboot image, and it just.... worked. installed to a 2gbyte CF Card which is of course recognised as an IDE drive.
nomadic has joined #arm-netbook
<lkcl> i don't think i even needed to do anything special for the pxeboot.... just followed instructions on google "debian pxeboot howto"
<lkcl> if however you want 4 or 5 ethernets, look up the ubiquiti "rspro" - it has 4 gigabit ethernets and 1 POE ethernet, as well as 2 MiniPCI Type III slots.
<lkcl> and it's around $80 qty 1.
<lkcl> the only thing: if you don't use POE, the DC input i think is still something like 15 to 40V
<lkcl> whereas the alix6f2 takes between 7 and 20 (so any 12V PSU will do)
<lkcl> /peaceout.
<lkcl> sleeeep....
<calris_> lkcl: Thanks :)
<ManoftheSea> Haha, luke, talking about not cross-compiling and suggesting x86.
<ManoftheSea> I am disappoint :)\
<lkcl> ManoftheSea: pffh. i need a life!
<ManoftheSea> Haha. How's the electric buggy?
<lkcl> ManoftheSea: *sigh* - had to abandon it. it's ok - i have a redesign anyway
<ManoftheSea> cool. good luck. Good night.
<lkcl> geodesic structure, bigger, more aerodynamic. *sigh*.
<lkcl> night :)
<ManoftheSea> calris: I'd suggest anything on openwrt's list.
<calris_> MonoftheSea: Yeah, as I said, the D-Link DIR-835 looks good and I can get it locally for ~$160

<ManoftheSea> wow, that seems expensive.

<ManoftheSea> I've got an (older, no longer made) WNDR 3700v2 that was only $100, and it does 2.4 and 5 wireless-N
<ManoftheSea> also, has a seperate eth1
<ManoftheSea> I think all the newer netgear WNDR are not supported, though.
<calris_> MonoftheSea: The DIR-835 has 16MB Flash and 128MB RAM - Gives me some headroom to do more than just routing :)
<calris_> ManoftheSea: Goddamit, I will get your name right one day ;)
<ManoftheSea> I don't know that model. But yeah, I definitely suggest OpenWRT, it's compiled with the smaller klibc.

<orly_owl> im pretty sure it can
<orly_owl> its on my router
<orly_owl> also #openwrt openwrt.org

<orly_owl> get that if you want it
<orly_owl> support isnt as good though
<orly_owl> but 64mb ram and can do 2.4 or 5ghz

* zumbi nods.. oh A31 + 2GB RAM .. niceee
<mnemoc> if you only want android...
<mnemoc> also, the A31 has a 5th core (called ar100) doing the power management via rpc
<mnemoc> that increases the closeness factor of A31 a lot
