<projectgus>
should get you the schematic library pretty quickly at least, footprint you may have to diy

<lkcl>
slapin: i don't "hate" the a13 - it's quite simple: it only has a 16-bit RAM interface, therefore it's automatically going to be absolutely dreadful performance
<lkcl>
and b it doesn't have HDMI, Ethernet, SATA or ... well... anything half-way decent that made the a10 massively attractive.
<lkcl>
and if you have to add the ICs in to get HDMI, Ethernet and SATA back in, it's about $5 worth of components, which completely defeats the purpose of being lower-cost!
<lkcl>
so you end up with something that's *more* expensive than an A10.... and you still have the shit 16-bit RAM interface!
<lkcl>
ergo, it's shit!
<rz2k>
doesnt 16bit interface only limit max ram available?
<lkcl>
rz2k: no, it doesn't - it limits the speed at which you can *access* the ram.
<lkcl>
if you limit the address bus (this is the data bus that's 16-bit wide) *then* you limit the max available RAM
<rz2k>
thought it only had address bus limit :p
<lkcl>
but when everyone else is going "hmm... we really should be thinking about doing a 64-bit-wide memory interface", a number of companies are going "hey let's make a small cheapo processor to saturate the tablet market, let's make it shit by halving the data rate of the RAM interface, yaaay!"
<rz2k>
also there is a problem with routing, for some reason there is no ball-to-pin data for ddr3 signals
<lkcl>
and if you're not expecting to do... ouch, that doesn't help either
<rz2k>
and you need to place that resistors, usually they are embedded elsewhere
<lkcl>
i don't fully understand DDR2/3 signalling yet, which is why i'm asking these soc companies for EVB schematics
<lkcl>
leeeave it aloooone :)
<projectgus>
are there any other SoCs that come in non-BGA packaging like the a13?
<rz2k>
imx-something was in qfp
<rz2k>
but it was long ago

Hi all, is anyone aware of a SoM module supplier that offers some thing like the modules from Variscite? Compact module, but without a bunch of connectors hanging off the module. Also something that is available in industrial temp ranges, and 'cost effective' :-)

CaCtus491: it would not be small if it has a bunch of connectors hanging off of it
<CaCtus491>
L84Supper: Exactly, that's why I don't want a bunch of connectors hanging off it :) It's a headless product, and due to casing, etc, the Ethernet port is to go on a carrier board along with the power supply and other custom logic
<CaCtus491>
Looking for something that takes care of the processor, RAM, and storage
<lkcl>
projectgus: you can get away with a 308-pin QFP: it's just that it's 32mm on a side. i designed a pinout which includes DDR3 32-bit [150 of the 308 pins] and even packs in PCIe 4x (multiplexed onto one of the two LCD interfaces, also multiplexed with dual LVDS) - so it *can* be done.
<lkcl>
but 308 pins @ 0.4mm pitch is still a monster.
<lkcl>
that's... yeah 30.8mm just for the pins, with a little more for overlap at the edges, so about 34mm.
<lkcl>
in other words, BIG by today's embedded standards, but good on thermal dissipation, and magic on price and yield.
