<DocScrutinizer05> [POLL] re N900 sourcing: buy at high price and with quite some risk to either get lemons or simply receive literal bricks *now*, or wait and hope for 35% better price and very good warranty and security by employing our boots on the ground?
<DocScrutinizer05> or does somebody know a good trustworthy escrow service that's accepted by aliexpress sellers?
<DocScrutinizer05> ("high price" means: the 140EUR for N900 in complete device would barely suffice)
<DocScrutinizer05> the devices cost us 100 bucks on aliexpress, with taxes and handling and spares/DOA and shipping and shipping risk on top. And there's no assembly of the final Neo900 included yet

<edwin> I don't know how sales on aliexpress works, can you ask for a refund if they send you garbage?
<edwin> i.e. is the risk in terms of more delays due to getting garbage, or is there a risk in loosing the money you used to buy those things too?
<DocScrutinizer05> edwin: sure I can *ask*, the question is what happens then
<DocScrutinizer05> tbh I can't tell what's the risk so I have to assume every risk is possible

<DocScrutinizer05> worst case I order 200 devices and get 20 baked stone bricks
<DocScrutinizer05> and when I ask for refund the company doesn't exist anymore
<DocScrutinizer05> in hongkong or singapore or china
<DocScrutinizer05> not _very_ likely but possible in theory. More likely though is I get complete lemons which I only can discard due to extremely poor quality or even fake
<DocScrutinizer05> most likely result however is I get a mix of good and poor quality devices
<DocScrutinizer05> possibly with second source poor sensitivity digitizers and maybe even displays with defective pixels and the like

<DocScrutinizer05> now disputing such an issue is always a *lot* of 'fun'

<edwin> I'd personally go for the safer approach then, I mean I waited so far , I can wait a bit longer
<DocScrutinizer05> there's some risk in the safer approach too: that better opportunity might never come again
<DocScrutinizer05> we had it over a year ago, but we lacked the funds to actually do the order back when
<edwin> ah its limited time?
<DocScrutinizer05> sure, our chinese friend found a source where he could check each single device at location prior to purchase. But that source vanished since back then
<DocScrutinizer05> now he's trying to find another similar source
<edwin> ok I get it now, so you have this offer on aliexpress, limited time, with some risk; and you can also search for another offer 'on the ground', but you can't actually check the oferring from aliexpress using your friend?
<DocScrutinizer05> alas it seems he can't handle the Aliexpress offers, not even when accepting the higher price - they seem to not ship to china at all
<edwin> and the problem is by the time your friend finds another source the aliexpress oferring might vanish
<DocScrutinizer05> yes exactly
<DocScrutinizer05> pretty weird Aliexpress shops don't sell to china
<DocScrutinizer05> but that's what he told me

<edwin> can you buy some part from aliexpress, and wiat for the other part for your friend to find? then you average out the final price if its successful, and if either fails at least you didn't loose the whole thing
<DocScrutinizer05> yes, that's possible
<edwin> and if the batch you order from aliexpress looks good you can order the other half
<DocScrutinizer05> I can't order the quantity we anticipate to need, right now. anyway
<DocScrutinizer05> not enough funds
<edwin> up to you, I have no experience dealing with these shops, so count my vote as 'whatever your own experience tells you its the best choice'
<DocScrutinizer05> our order is limited to a 200 devices right now, by our funds (and that's exactly the amount needed for actual preorders). Ordering a second batch from Aliexpress doesn't warrant same quality as first batch, not even when we order at same shop
<DocScrutinizer05> I have little experience too
<DocScrutinizer05> so far (3 cases) sellers were very friendly and good as described and no problems at all. But this is a sample size of just 3 events
<DocScrutinizer05> s/ good / goods /
<DocScrutinizer05> a very usual problem is though: the offer is complete fake and when you actually want to order, they tell you "not available right now"
