<lazywei> example.to_yaml will raise NoMethodError
<lazywei> it seems that psych, which is the default yaml engine used by ruby, has some problem when deal with the Delegator
<lazywei> fortunately, I found a discussion about this problem on https://github.com/tenderlove/psych/issues/100
<lazywei> and there is a working pull request to fix this problem
<lazywei> so .. to sum up, I somehow fixed my problem. just for if any others encounter this error..

<sarsntony> test2
<sarsntony> does anybody here know much about encoding multibyte chars?
<apeiros> sarsntony: don't ask meta-questions. ask your real question.
<sarsntony> ah okay, sorry wasn't aware
<sarsntony> this code causes "invalid multibyte char (EUC-KR)"
<sarsntony> is euc-kr not supported on ruby?
<sarsntony> I'm running ruby 2.0.0-p247 atm
<apeiros> `#encoding: euc-kr` informs ruby about the encoding of your string literals
<apeiros> it does not inform it about the encoding on stdout, stdin etc.
kgrz has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<sarsntony> I'm not sure if I follow correctly
<apeiros> I suspect that it tries to transform it on puts. but lets verify stepwise.
<sarsntony> for additional info, setting encoding to utf-8
<apeiros> what does `p "하이".encoding` print?
<sarsntony> outputs correclty
<apeiros> ah… then it might be that you edit it wrongly in your editor
<apeiros> if you state `#encoding: euc-kr`, then your file must be indeed in that encoding.
<sarsntony> so I must modify my editor setting somehow as well?
<sarsntony> btw, `p "ÇÏÀÌ".encoding` also gives same error
<apeiros> of course. you can't just claim something was written in an encoding when it isn't.
<apeiros> sarsntony: `10:54 sarsntony: outputs correclty `
<apeiros> that's not really answering my question.
<apeiros> I asked *what* it prints. your interpretation of correct may be off.
<sarsntony> oh
<sarsntony> I menat
<sarsntony> (AM 01:54:19) <sarsntony> for additional info, setting encoding to utf-8 (AM 01:54:21) <sarsntony> outputs correclty
<sarsntony> to be in one line, sorry if that caused a confusion
<apeiros> ah
<sarsntony> (AM 01:54:19) <apeiros> what does `p "ÇÏÀÌ".encoding` print? this causes the same error
<sarsntony> (with encoding flag as euc-kr)
<apeiros> sarsntony: what encoding is your irc client set to?

<sarsntony> ah, so my file's encoding is the culprit

<sarsntony> well,, true.
<apeiros> it would lead to a bit more CPU being used.
<sarsntony> can't argue with that :)
<apeiros> but unless you're talking about thousands of messages per second, that should be mostly irrelevant.

<mark06> jrobeson: there's another thing I would personally take as a bug of some sort too...
<mark06> jrobeson: same strings are considered not equal if they're not on same encoding
<jrobeson> that's why i'm glad i just deal with utf-8 :)
<mark06> jrobeson: but documentation is obscure about that, I had to look at Ruby's source code to confirm
<jrobeson> no chance to notice such things :)
<mark06> I found no equality method that ignores the encoding, I think it should have something like this
<jrobeson> mark06, so check your results there
<mark06> it's a bit confusing, python is more clear... "str" are like set of bytes while "unicode" is an abstraction... in Ruby strings are both at the same time, odd
dingus_khan has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<whitequark> ruby strings are always sets of characters
<mark06> and what would be a character?
fosky has joined #ruby-lang
<mark06> if they were unicode characters, there would be no sense for String#encoding and such
<mark06> ruby strings are like encoding-aware set of bytes...
postmodern has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<whitequark> abstract characters
<whitequark> mind you, even for unicode, there's much more than one way to map characters to bytes
<mark06> that's what I mean, if they were merely a set of (abstracted) characters, it would make no sense talking about mapping to bytes or whatever...
<mark06> when you deal with python's unicode type, you don't care about encoding, just that it came from a trusted source (for example you read a file and you're sure the unicode object was properly decoded with the right encoding from the set of bytes that came from that file)
<mark06> I'm telling this because str1==str2 is unclear now
<mark06> and the docs give no clue about it, I had to look at the source code
<mark06> and I miss a non-encoding-aware ==
<whitequark> ah, I see what you mean
<workmad3> mark06: there were reasons for the way ruby added encoding support, mostly rooted in ruby being created by a japanese guy and some issues (that are now mostly resolved, I believe) to do with round-tripping japanese and chinese text through unicode losing information
<workmad3> mark06: and so ruby didn't adopt a 'unicode everything' approach to string encodings

<mark06> for example you can see that http://bit.ly/19ITgaT == http://bit.ly/18doMBv, but this comparison does not work on ruby 1.9+ because they would have encoding information embedded
richardburton has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<mark06> i.e. even though they're the same character, whatever encoding ruby is using on the string objects, they're considered different just because of an "implementation detail"
<mark06> I would just change == to ignore encodings, and maybe have === doing that instead

<whitequark> === has completely different semantics
<mark06> currently, they do the same thing: "These two methods, == and ===, share the same implementation." (String's doc)
<whitequark> === is case comparison
<mark06> ok, then ==== :)
<whitequark> not a method name
<mark06> then create it :)
<whitequark> .eql? would fit nicely
<whitequark> perhaps file a bug.
<mark06> ah good, "eql?" looks like the right place for current behavior of ==, yeah I guess I'll file a feature request later...

<Elico> canton7: do yo think there are another simple options?
<canton7> Elico, hmm? using nokogiri is by far the simplest option
<Elico> like libxml-ruby??
<Elico> well what gem would I use to install it?
<Elico> I am having some troubles installing it..
<canton7> you could use another xml parser, for sure
<apeiros> "some troubles" is not a workable problem description.
<canton7> what troubles are you having? my mind-reading powers are weak right now

<canton7> that'll apply to installing *any* gem
<Elico> yes I think so
<Elico> I do prefer to use libxml...
* canton7 shrugs
<Elico> I will try nokogiri first..
<cout> I prefer to use "find / -name '*.xml' | xargs rm -f"

<Elico> Ha Ha
<apeiros> Elico: you prefer an inferior solution, why?
<Elico> because it exists on any linux..
<apeiros> where "it" is what?
<canton7> you have to install a ruby gem, either way
<canton7> libxml-ruby doesn't exist on any linux installation
<apeiros> libxml?
<canton7> neither does nokogiri
<apeiros> maybe you should educate yourself first
<canton7> both nokogiri and libxml-ruby use libxml
<apeiros> nokogiri uses the C libxml underneath

<Elico> I will try to show you
lfox has joined #ruby-lang
<Elico> the files has the xml header which states that it's utf8 xml1 etc. Then there is a metalink root which will have files child and and in each and every node\child of files there should be a file child\node
