rafa: if it's something reasonably common, one can find out lots of material properties. such as how much abuse it can handle before breaking, temperature range, etc. much nicer to look things up in a table than to conduct the corresponding destructive experiments :)

wolfspraul: regarding rf, there seem to be two main camps. the ieee ...15... family, all at 2.4 GHz, with zigbee and similar, and the sub-ghz stuff. most of the latter is 800/900 mhz, but there are a few at 400. most of them can probably talk to each other, as long as they support the same type of modulation (ook/fsk)

wolfspraul: with 800/900 out due to messy regulations, that leaves 434 MHz and 2.4 GHz. the 434 MHz stuff is all relatively basic. the silabs chips are already at the top end in terms of built-in "intelligence".

wolfspraul: this one supports IEEE 802.15.4 in general, not only ZigBee (not sure yet to what extent the chips advertized as zigbee are limited to zigbee. chances are that many can also do other ieee 802.15.4 protocols)

heh, in one of my bens, the crystals have a bit of red glue on top. i guess that should be at the bottom, to attach them to the pcb :) i wonder if this is a common mistake. (haven't pried apart the other ben yet)

to resume the RF discussion. the thing that's a bit uncertain about IEEE ...15... is the distance. e.g., zigbee is designed for about 10 m. nevertheless, some experiments seem to have yielded > 300 m (doubtlessly under quite ideal conditions, but it's still a lot)

How does it work on OpenWRT?  On Debian I use update-rc.d but with OpenWRT it looks like the order is embedded in the init.d script like this: "START=40" so I guess something auto links the script using that info
