<Mangy_Dog>
im trying to figure out a way to get active cooling on my H3
<Mangy_Dog>
but out of interest, does the ram chip need cooling to do you think?
<lurchi_>
depends on the case and the natural airflow over the RAM (or lack thereof)
<Mangy_Dog>
well its in a chassis
<Mangy_Dog>
so no natural flow tbh
<Mangy_Dog>
my speaker holes are doubling as air inlets
<Mangy_Dog>
and the idea i have is the internal fan runs into a duct with the duct passing over the heat sink of the h3 and out though an exit hole of the chassis
<Mangy_Dog>
currently tbh i could fit a sink to the ram chip as well
<Mangy_Dog>
oh wait maybe i cant
<Mangy_Dog>
na
<Mangy_Dog>
cant fit a sink to it
<Mangy_Dog>
but can run air over it
<KotCzarny>
just move hot air away from the board
<lurchi_>
if the CPU heat sink does not block the air around the RAM, you should be fine
<KotCzarny>
and put a heatsink on soc
<KotCzarny>
should be enough
<lurchi_>
worst case - large CPU heat sink, covering but not touching the RAM
<Mangy_Dog>
so i dont need any forced air flow renewal?
<Mangy_Dog>
these are my fan options at the moment
<Mangy_Dog>
i already designed a setup for the middle one but i wasnt sure it was strong enough to keep the cpu cool even with the heatsink and with the airflow direct on the sink
<Mangy_Dog>
im currently trying to design a fit for the 3030 on the left
<KotCzarny>
air duct
<Mangy_Dog>
has A LOT of airflow but a much higher current draw
<Mangy_Dog>
its also prooving to be a right pain in the arse to design to fit in my crampt shassie
<Mangy_Dog>
chassie
<Mangy_Dog>
chassis
<Mangy_Dog>
i say crampt... its crampt in areas around the pi but i have loads of free space in other areas that i cant fill with hardware
<KotCzarny>
'cramped'
<Mangy_Dog>
thanks
<Mangy_Dog>
i knew i had it wrong... just had an argument with brother
<Mangy_Dog>
so heads not in the right place
<Mangy_Dog>
one thing with the 3030
<Mangy_Dog>
its not silent :p not loud either but noticable
<Mangy_Dog>
anyway whats funny
<Mangy_Dog>
it starts out pulling 230ma
<KotCzarny>
remember to protect fan so it wouldnt reintruduce noise/backvoltage
<Mangy_Dog>
but it slowly reduces that down to 186ma ma as the fan speeds up more and more
<Mangy_Dog>
diode and cap on the 5v in to the fan?
<KotCzarny>
anything other than bare wires
<Mangy_Dog>
nods

i was going to write a little program for the pi (yes i still need tl learn how to do that precisely but i have some ideas) that basically worked as a fan manager and kicked in when the cpu starts heating up triggering an increasing cuty cycle on a pwm pin to drive a mosfet or maybe a transistor

<KotCzarny>
there is a lots of similar apps
<KotCzarny>
and you should use some scripting language
<KotCzarny>
even bash would do
<KotCzarny>
i've done it on my thinkpad
<Mangy_Dog>
hmm i was going to do it in c++ but yeah anything if its pretty passive and wont hog the cpu :p
<KotCzarny>
it will be sleeping most of the time
<Mangy_Dog>
im not so sure
<Mangy_Dog>
i wasnt happy with the 60c idle on this thing :p
<KotCzarny>
yup, 1-2s of sleep is a lot
<Mangy_Dog>
anything above 50c will get some fan treatment
<Mangy_Dog>
oh hardware sleep
<Mangy_Dog>
sorry missunderstood
<KotCzarny>
nope, script sleep
<Mangy_Dog>
thats what i meant
<sparks1x>
Kot from Poland? :)

Just wondering)
<Mangy_Dog>
hmmmmm
<Mangy_Dog>
just retesting the middle fan 2020
<Mangy_Dog>
it might still be enough
<Mangy_Dog>
just need to get some heat sinks to test it with
<Mangy_Dog>
there in teh post
<KotCzarny>
all it needs to do is to move some hot air away
<KotCzarny>
so good air duct should do
<Mangy_Dog>
yeah but it also need to move enough of it away fast enough, from a already semi warm enviroment to be able to keep the cpu from throttling under load
diego71 has joined #linux-sunxi
<Mangy_Dog>
if this 2020 does a good enough job i wont even need to pwm the fan
<Mangy_Dog>
some of that space being reduced could better be used for cooling
<KotCzarny>
lurchi_: it needs to be portable
<lurchi_>
(sorry, just stumbled over it ...)
<mru>
maybe you could use a turbo encabulator
<Mangy_Dog>
and fit within my design
<Mangy_Dog>
fuck me
<Mangy_Dog>
yeah no
<pmpp>
Mangy_Dog: feels like accumulator ( ~ super condensator) are most likely able to refill themselves very fast, while battery has a connotation of being slow to "recharge"
<Mangy_Dog>
not only is that too big thats insanely over kill for a pi
<lurchi_>
(not being serious, if you haven't guessed ...)
<Mangy_Dog>
if super caps were go good why are we still using lipos for phones and other portable battery powered devices?
<KotCzarny>
also, you need to design real power off
<Mangy_Dog>
lurchi i hope not
<Mangy_Dog>
:p
<KotCzarny>
h3 is not a portable soc
<KotCzarny>
lowest fake off mode i managed to reach was ~40mA
<Mangy_Dog>
oh i have an off switch
<Mangy_Dog>
my handheld is about 95% completed
<Mangy_Dog>
the only sticking issue is this cooling design and backlight
<Mangy_Dog>
but ive gone with a different backlight circuit now
<willmore>
Mangy_Dog, this is the case I use on my ODROID-C2 boards: https://cogent.design
<willmore>
It's milled from a block of Al.
<Mangy_Dog>
nodnods seen stuff like that
<Mangy_Dog>
pretty cool
<Mangy_Dog>
if you want an enclosure
<karlp>
which is why it costs more than the c2...
<willmore>
karlp, I got mine free, they were prototypes.
<karlp>
nice, but perhaps colours your opinion of it somewaht rosy :)
<willmore>
Came unpolished and not anodized, but a few minutes with some sandpaper and they look nice.
<willmore>
karlp, indeed.
<willmore>
If you want them, mhoney has a few more to give away. So, if you have a C2 and are in NA, let him know.
<karlp>
my c2 is ina closed cupboard, sitting on top of an external harddrive, in a little blue plastic case.
<karlp>
I guess I just don't push it hard enough :)
<willmore>
I never had thermal issues with my C2's with the stock heatsink--even running four threads of CPUBURN. And overclocked...
<willmore>
But these cases aren't just good cooling solutions, they're also very pretty.
<willmore>
I need to find a nicer ethernet cable so I can put them on display in front of the TVs they run.
<karlp>
hehe
<karlp>
was just abotu to say, "until you run cables and usb attachments all over the place"
<willmore>
All my ethernet cable is the very industrial looking stuff.
<karlp>
now then, got my nanopi duo2 back up, got the usb gadget again, but don't have wifi. I wonder what I forgot to write down last time :)
<willmore>
Well, the power and HDMI cables look okay, but the bright blue, stiff ethernet cable detracts a bit.
<willmore>
I think I have some cheesy little thin/flexable ethernet patch cables around here. IIRC, they're only good for 100BT, but they would look okay. It's not like the box needs GigE to play videos off an SMB share....

i personally just hide cables behind
<[TheBug]>
willmore: <willmore> Mangy_Dog, this is the case I use on my ODROID-C2 boards: https://cogent.design -- man at that cost I just stuick to tyhe plastic case, made a hole in it and added a fan on top of the heatsink... cost me 5$ (of course I guess I have to worry about the fan down the road, but I can probablyu replace the fan 4-5 times and still be under cost) All that said, that is a
<[TheBug]>
nice case, just frustrated its so damn expensive ;p
<willmore>
There's a lot of work that went into making them, so I can understand.

<willmore>
I can either hide the HDMI and micro-USB on one side or the ethernet on the other. I chose to hide the two cables. Maybe I should rotate it?
<[TheBug]>
yeah but I just couldn't legitimizing purchasing such at 45$ when a 5$ fan can accomplish about the same
<willmore>
You in NA? He's got a few unfinished prototypes left to give away.
<[TheBug]>
I have my c2 attached to the back of a 50" display w/ 3M velcro tape, fan is in it and barely audible (very low DBi fan ~20dBi maybe) and it runs 24/7
<[TheBug]>
hmm yes I am
<[TheBug]>
:D
<willmore>
Well, then, let mhoney know and he might send you one. :)
<[TheBug]>
might just have to do that
<[TheBug]>
willmore: thanks for the tip :)
<willmore>
You might need to go to #odroid as that's where he hangs out and I don't know what his messaging preferences are.
<[TheBug]>
yeah already idle there
<willmore>
Oh, sorry, you're at the bottom of the list, I thought you'd be at the top and I didn't see you there.
<[TheBug]>
hehe
<[TheBug]>
it's okay
