<kalpana> how to update the uboot settings in a sd card??
reinforce has joined #linux-sunxi
<markvandenborre> kalpana: build time or runtime settings are different...
<markvandenborre> kalpana: the runtime settings, you can test them out by using sentenv from the u-boot prompt
<markvandenborre> the build time settings, obviously, you need to rebuild u-boot with them included
<markvandenborre> into the relevant defconfig file
<markvandenborre> I've recently gone through the process while (as of yet unsuccessfully) trying to get the banana pi LCD to work
<markvandenborre> you might glean something from https://github.com/FOSDEM/video/wiki/Mainline-kernel-on-bpi

<markvandenborre> hi! debugging a bit further, trying to get the 3.5" LCD on our banana pi to work, we threw random bits at /dev/fb0
<markvandenborre> (after manually enabling the backlight in u-boot)
<markvandenborre> this was the result:
<markvandenborre> (the colour changes are after every time catting from /dev/urandom)
Putti has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<aalm> '3.5" LCD'
<aalm> idk, but to me that doesn't tell much :D
<markvandenborre> aalm: it's the one that is referenced in the
<aalm> oic
<markvandenborre> and in http://linux-sunxi.org/LCD#Mainline_Linux_.28simple-panel.29 it is supposedly also referenced
<aalm> yeah, the vid didnt really show anything about the connection, so was just wondering which lcd:)
<markvandenborre> it's supposed to be a parallel display
<aalm> mm, doesn't really look as random as one might guess?
<aalm> but then i don't know about what the /dev/fb0 does expect, so i'll stfu. :)
<markvandenborre> the normal thing to expect while catting random to /dev/fb0 would be coloured specs
<markvandenborre> in the entire colour spectrum
<markvandenborre> everywhere
<markvandenborre> sort of like on an old analog tv with really really bad reception
<benettig> it seems that you didn't setup your lcd correctly
<benettig> some front/back porch timing issue
<benettig> dotclk seems to be correct, but the rest not
<markvandenborre> benettig: can you elaborate?
<benettig> markvandenborre: maybe I've misunderstood
<markvandenborre> I'll start googling and reading up further etcetera, but this is all rather new to me
<benettig> do you have problems to get that lcd working?
<markvandenborre> yes indeed
<benettig> ok
<benettig> do you have its datasheet?
<markvandenborre> in the sense that with the legacy kernel, it works no problem
<benettig> ok mainline
<markvandenborre> but being FOSDEM, we want as free software a setup as possible
<benettig> did you set it up on u-boot?
<markvandenborre> yes
<benettig> and that's the result?
<markvandenborre> I used the values taken from the linux-sunxi.org wiki
<benettig> wait, they're not the same
<benettig> you have to understand how it works before
<markvandenborre> benettig: the ones in the table of LCD panels next to banana_pi_35lcd.fex
<benettig> here is the answer: http://linux-sunxi.org/LCD
<benettig> you have to convert the previous values to new ones
<markvandenborre> benettig: what did I miss in that table?
<markvandenborre> I'm sorry, it's an honest question after reading it _very_ thorougly
<markvandenborre> thoroughly even
<benettig> can you point me to datasheet and give me your u-boot LCD settings?
<markvandenborre> all info we have is http://wiki.lemaker.org/BananaPro/Pi:LCD_Module
<benettig> for 3.5" ?
<markvandenborre> yes indeed
fkluknav has joined #linux-sunxi
<benettig> your LCD u-boot config line?
<markvandenborre> you mean build time or run time?
<markvandenborre> we have nothing special in terms of run time config
<benettig> build time, I mean CONFIG_VIDEO_LCD_MODE from you build
<benettig> that string
<markvandenborre> boot time config we took what was listed in the table on the wiki
popolon has joined #linux-sunxi
<markvandenborre> CONFIG_VIDEO_LCD_MODE="x:320,y:240,depth:24,pclk_khz:7000,le:38,ri:20,up:15,lo:4,hs:30,vs:3,sync:3,vmode:0"
<markvandenborre> CONFIG_VIDEO_LCD_POWER="PH12"
<markvandenborre> CONFIG_VIDEO_LCD_BL_EN="PH8"
<markvandenborre> CONFIG_VIDEO_LCD_BL_PWM="PB2"
<markvandenborre> I hope that was not too inappropriate

<benettig> try that way
<benettig> recompile u-boot and check if it changes, otherwise it could depend on linux side
<benettig> but first take care of u-boot vga if it works correctly
<markvandenborre> right... let me try that; thank you for your input
<benettig> markvandenborre: you're welcome, let me know if it works
<benettig> anyway I encourage you to find its datasheet and check it
<markvandenborre> benettig: will do
<markvandenborre> it's already a small victory to get anything out
<markvandenborre> so now some more visual debugging can start in earnest
<benettig> yes, and you will see when it will totally work, I'm sure you can do it

<markvandenborre> benettig: changed, somewhat similar effect, though the horizontal stripes now take more than 1/3 of the screen when catting random stuff to the screen
<markvandenborre> benettig: if I understand correctly, I can get the .bin from the working legacy lcd config
<markvandenborre> convert it to fex
Gerry has joined #linux-sunxi

<benettig> VSYNC and HSYNC are connected?
<benettig> and with legacy linux worked right?
yann|work has joined #linux-sunxi
<Gerry> benettig: yes, the screen works when we boot our bananian image with legacy kernel
<Gerry> (hi, btw :))
<benettig> hi Gerry
<benettig> I'm not sure about display parameters
<benettig> try to find on the back of LCD the correct mark
<benettig> to find out the datasheet and doublecheck
<benettig> markvandenborre, Gerry do you stop testing it on u-boot, or do you test it in linux?
<benettig> I would prefer you to test only u-boot to begin
<Gerry> benettig: well, from u-boot the only result we can get is the backlight going on when we toggle PB2
<benettig> Gerry: markvandenborre: do you have CONFIG_VIDEO_LCD_DCLK_PHASE=1
<benettig> on u-boot defconfig?
<benettig> ok so u-boot doesn't setup vga
SP7RT has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<markvandenborre> benettig: it is in the .config file generated
<markvandenborre> benettig: where did you get the 68 and 18 for le and up respectively btw?
<markvandenborre> I calculated those values accoring to the .fex file from LeMaker and the formula in the wiki
<benettig> according to fex
<markvandenborre> and I end up with the values that I see in the wiki
<benettig> 408 - 68
<benettig> - 320
<benettig> = 20
<benettig> so le: 68
<benettig> ri: 20
<markvandenborre> if I look at the formula for le in the wiki, I end up with
<benettig> sorry, you are right
<benettig> my mistake
<markvandenborre> np, thx for your help
<benettig> can you try to rebuild without CONFIG_VIDEO_LCD_DCLK_PHASE=1?
<Gerry> of course, doing so now :)
<benettig> ok, because what I've seen seems to be something dealing with CLK, DE, VSYNC, HSYNC
<benettig> so frequency and timing(they're not)
<benettig> then it could only be phase
<benettig> try also adding CONFIG_VIDEO_VGA to your u-boot, in that way you can test on u-boot
<benettig> ah wait no
<markvandenborre> benettig: ?
<markvandenborre> we are working through serial console anyway on our bpi
<benettig> ok
scream has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<markvandenborre> benettig: I've run bin2fex on our known working legacy bin
<benettig> and?
<markvandenborre> no delta at all
<benettig> oh
<benettig> ah wait, it could be a kernel side problem
<benettig> maybe linux reconfigure your display
<benettig> wait
<markvandenborre> yes, or a u-boot version problem?
scream has joined #linux-sunxi
<benettig> uboot is mainline right?
<benettig> take a look at my defconfig
<markvandenborre> u-boot is git clone git://git.denx.de/u-boot.git
<benettig> ok
<benettig> so that's ok
<benettig> take a look at my defconfig on lines 967 and follow to 975
<markvandenborre> I've seen much recent movement in there, but it was mostly renaming variables
<benettig> this way you would be able to have your display working on u-boot at least
<markvandenborre> I also have CONFIG_VIDEO_DT_SIMPLEFB explicitly set to y
<markvandenborre> the rest of the lines you quote are identical to ours

<markvandenborre> ?
<markvandenborre> I think we have amply verified that the u-boot build time settings for this device are according to the rules set out in the wiki
<markvandenborre> and if we toggle the backlight on in u-boot and boot into linux, we can actually get garbled output
