<andromeda-galaxy>
the linux-sunxi wiki says that the A13 supports only raw nand/SD3.0 for storage, but the A13 manual says that "The SD/MMC controller can be configured as a Secure Digital Multimedia Card controller, which simultaeneously supports Secure Digital I/O (SDIO), Multimedia Cards (MMC), eMMC Card.
<andromeda-galaxy>
does the A13 support eMMC or not?
<andromeda-galaxy>
as I have a board with some NAND on it and I would like to add an eMMC while leaving the nand alone

hello all
<crzyp3ck>
I want to install linux or bsd (anything except android) on an A13 allwinner tablet. It is JXD S9100.
jernej has joined #linux-sunxi
<crzyp3ck>
how could I go about it? could I get some help.
<diego71>
andromeda-galaxy: 1bit spi mode it should be the same protocol for sd and mmc, so it should be possibile to support either
<diego71>
probably don't support high speed
<premoboss>
crzyp3ck, if noone before you did that activity, you have a lot of work to do by yourself.
<crzyp3ck>
premoboss: np. but I don't know how to start?
reinforce has joined #linux-sunxi
<premoboss>
crzyp3ck, search the hardware more similar to your hardware (same soc) tha study how linux/bsd was placed on that harfdware.
<crzyp3ck>
I worked with linux and bsd before.
<premoboss>
if your hardware has a debug port, start to join int via usb/ttl converter
paulk-blaze has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<crzyp3ck>
right now. I can install android on it with livesuit and usb connection
<crzyp3ck>
I am up to make my own linux or bsd img to install on it via livesuit. is it the way?
<premoboss>
yes as far as i know.
<premoboss>
if you can "flash" that fdrevice, it is the first step for furter activities.

<crzyp3ck>
tkaiser: so; how could I install debian or openbsd on jxd s9100?
<KotCzarny>
read wiki
<crzyp3ck>
KotCzarny: link plz?
<KotCzarny>
then if you know what uboot is, its simple
<KotCzarny>
i would advise to play with os on sdcard at first, as nand support is sketchy in mainline
<crzyp3ck>
still unclear. where does the uboot come in?
<KotCzarny>
uboot == grub
<crzyp3ck>
should uboot be installed on android tablet
<KotCzarny>
(with a bit of simplifictation its bios+grub)
<KotCzarny>
in the same manner 'should grub be installed on pc'
<crzyp3ck>
I got the part that uboot is a boot loader like grub
<KotCzarny>
1/ most likely your tablet will boot from sdcard if it has uboot installed
<KotCzarny>
2/ you can also use sdcard for os too
<KotCzarny>
that will let you keep android on nand and pop in sdcard for linux
<crzyp3ck>
KotCzarny: right know my tablet will start from its internal memory and run android 4
<crzyp3ck>
KotCzarny: yes. a good 2k/4k U1 microsd flash would do nicely
<crzyp3ck>
*/know/now
<KotCzarny>
most likely you will benefit if you find debug uart port/pads on the board
<KotCzarny>
read device pages of other a13 tablets to see where and what to look for
<tkaiser>
crzyp3ck: Without serial console you're lost anyway. So check this first and if you're still not too discouraged afterwards try to boot any A13 Linux image you find. This will give you an idea how boot process works (watching serial console output)
<KotCzarny>
tkaiser, there is a high chance its a rebadge of something else
<tkaiser>
KotCzarny: Are there 'ready to run' Linux images for any of those tablets around or not?
<KotCzarny>
maybe moeicenowy could roll out her distro for a13 too
<KotCzarny>
all it needs is to update the kernel with defconfig and lcd config
<KotCzarny>
otherwise they are almost the same as a10
<crzyp3ck>
the serial consol is like a Jtag pin out?
msevwork has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]

<crzyp3ck>
KotCzarny: how do you use it/set it up?
<KotCzarny>
use what?
Christos has joined #linux-sunxi
<premoboss>
crzyp3ck, converter usb/ttl 3v3 are recognized atumatically by linux as /dev/ttyUSB0,1,2, etc. you can use itr with minicom to talk to your devide.
<KotCzarny>
you connect rx, tx, gnd on the board, usb in the pc, then just run screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200 on pc
<crzyp3ck>
premoboss: I opened the device and on the board is F900_mainboard_v1.0.0
<KotCzarny>
there you will see what happens and can enter commands too
yann-kaelig has joined #linux-sunxi
<crzyp3ck>
KotCzarny: under linux?
<KotCzarny>
windoze will work too
<KotCzarny>
using putty ofr example
<crzyp3ck>
KotCzarny: So you use ssh or telnet command?
<KotCzarny>
none, you use serial port for read/write
<KotCzarny>
but putty has a support for that, that's why i've suggested it
<NiteHawk>
crzyp3ck: no, it's a serial console (talking directly to the hardware). just use a terminal program like "minicom"
<KotCzarny>
nitehawk: on windoze putty is preferred
<KotCzarny>
and you can even run it in linux via wine
<KotCzarny>
really nice
<NiteHawk>
right. for windows i'd recommend putty too
<crzyp3ck>
What are the available commands?
<KotCzarny>
think of it as a direct control, remote keyboard
<KotCzarny>
with display too (text only)
<NiteHawk>
i.e. the "commands" depend on what is running at the SoC side at that particular moment (e.g. bootloader, kernel diagnostic output, serial login for running os, ...)
<KotCzarny>
as i've said, remote keyboard
victhor has joined #linux-sunxi
<crzyp3ck>
KotCzarny: So if I turn on the device and connect the device to my pc via that module I can run busybox commands. yes?
<KotCzarny>
if busybox is actually available (ie. device started linux and busybox is in path)
<ErwinH>
See it as a replacement for the keyboard and display connected to the device.
<crzyp3ck>
KotCzarny: it is android 4. rooted with busy box installed
<KotCzarny>
yes. that's why it's called console
<crzyp3ck>
oh. it is sinking in
<KotCzarny>
crzyp3ck: if it wasnt disabled, then yes
<crzyp3ck>
now the hardware Q? I would connect only 2 wire to the board? rx/tx?
<KotCzarny>
gnd is required
<KotCzarny>
so 3 wires
<KotCzarny>
gnd could be just anywhere on the board though
<KotCzarny>
so its not a problem
<KotCzarny>
that's why some tablet pads only have 2 points isntead of 3 or 4
<crzyp3ck>
KotCzarny: where are the rx tx on the board I can't see
<KotCzarny>
read what i
<KotCzarny>
've said
<crzyp3ck>
yup

MoeIcenowy: hi. looking to install uboot on F900 A13 tablet. in order to install bsd or linux. till know I found out I cant do that with UART module
<crzyp3ck>
I went and found one
<MoeIcenowy>
maybe you can do without UART
<MoeIcenowy>
I have several A33 tablets hacked without using UART
<crzyp3ck>
now I need to find where is the rx/tx on that [picture].
<crzyp3ck>
MoeIcenowy: how? really eager to hear all about how?
<MoeIcenowy>
crzyp3ck: install sunxi-tools on a Linux PC, mount /dev/block/nanda somewhere on your tablet, copy out script.bin from the nanda partition to your PC, and use bin2fex in sunxi-tools to convert it into readable fex format
<crzyp3ck>
MoeIcenowy: yup 800x480
<MoeIcenowy>
do you have the ability to do what I said just now?
<MoeIcenowy>
maybe you can first try q8_a13_tablet_defconfig of mainline U-Boot
<MoeIcenowy>
if your tablet is really 800x480
<KotCzarny>
MoeIcenowy: you should add generic support to your distro and create few compatible images
<MoeIcenowy>
how generic?
msev_work has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<MoeIcenowy>
yes... now I create too many alike images for different devices...
<KotCzarny>
few soc/lcd combinations
<KotCzarny>
maybe some tool to switch configs
<KotCzarny>
so one image + tool to switch between fexes/dtbs/lcds
<KotCzarny>
as image is on sdcard it could use pc or usb/fel maybe
<MoeIcenowy>
I dare not use kernel that needs fexes for my distros ;-)

i couldn't find any hint on the wiki, so: what boot= parameter should I pass to the kernel when I'm booting via FEL, i.e. I uploaded my lzma-compressed root FS via FEL? Kernel does not like /dev/ram /dev/ram0 or /dev/ram1...

isnt there an example on fel/usb page?

avafinger: what kernel are u using an why did you update the mmc driver where did you get that driver from in the first place. What device and device tree do you actually use? Just look at the values to know if it has a setting you expect, if not change it and reboot. For a64 with BSP note that u-boot also loads a device tree with its own drivers and thus might work differently than the kernel.

3.10.102, updated to get rid of the cmd errors, synced with 3.10.65 m2u and from the Android version that has newer driver (or improved driver). DTS tree is on the gist (last file). Firstly i am booting from SD card to be able to format eMMC but it seems to not switch to DDR mode
<avafinger>
U-boot is with DTS without eMMC enabled
