<jelle> nope, since I don't have it at the moment
<silviop> i put spl with dd but i suspect i'm in wrong
<jelle> silviop: well what is the real issue, it doesn't boot? shows u-boot?

<willmore> Nice!
<willmore> I got some proper barrel connectors for my Opi boards (and my ODROIDS--different connector) from China. Took a while, but I was away on vacation for most of it. :)
<miasma> 11 days, 7 business days. that's the best i've seen so far

<KotCzarny> how do you break sd connector?
<willmore> KotCzarny, for me, I seem to wear out the spring mechanism that latches them in. For my Rpi 1 model B, the SD connector just got flakey and I would get errors on the card after a bit of uptime. Cards always tested fine and a reformat would fix things. Supposedly it's a known bug and they won't replace bad boards.
<willmore> I got my Opi camera in a very short time. Let me check the timeline... Ordered Aug 23, arrived Aug 31.
<willmore> That's hard to beat.

<wild> hi, i 'am waiting for my order for a banana pi r1 (lamobo r1) and i would like know if she can boot on sata ? and what is flash spi ?
<KotCzarny> wild: i dont think it can boot sata
<jonkerj> I'm not an expert, wild, but I'd say if it can boot mainline u-boot, I could boot SATA
<KotCzarny> but you can always prepare sd card to do it
<KotCzarny> ie. read uboot/kernel from sd and boot with root=/dev/sdaX
<jonkerj> depends on the sata implementation in board and u-boot :-)
<jonkerj> yeah, that would be your second option
<wild> where is store uboot before sdcard boot ?
<jonkerj> don't know what you're asking exactly, but the wiki contains a lot of info about both your board and mainline u-boot
<vagrantc> the power issues on the Lamobo_R1 require some hackery to work around to get sata to work reliably
<wild> thanks you :)
<wild> power issues, about it, how much was the max V for battery connector on mainboard, i see 3.7v but others say 5v (what is wrong) , max. A ?
<KotCzarny> wild: uboot is stored in first megabyte of sd card (8kB after partition table)
<KotCzarny> max A is limited by power source
apritzel has joined #linux-sunxi
<KotCzarny> microusb allows max 1.8A, and from that 1.8A board can eat ~1A, more if you use some usb device
<KotCzarny> i just use dual voltage power supply and connect hdd power externally
<KotCzarny> (meanwell rd-65a)
<wild> thanks you kotczarny, but for the internal connector on mainboard ? (not micro usb)
tkaiser has joined #linux-sunxi
<KotCzarny> no, the whole board is powered by microusb
<jonkerj> KotCzarny: 8kB after table? are you sure?
<KotCzarny> so if you use this power as source you cant get more than 1.8A total (board+usb+hdd)
<jonkerj> wiki states "dd if=u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin of=${card} bs=1024 seek=8"
<tkaiser> wild: You can use the battery connector to provide 5V, AXP209's charger disables itself when voltage is too high (4.6V IIRC)
<KotCzarny> jonkerj: seek=8 bs=1024, clearly, 8kB to me
<tkaiser> wild: That's the only way to power this crappy device reliably especially when you want to use a SATA disk
<jonkerj> yeah, but card = /dev/mmcblk0 in my case
<KotCzarny> tkaiser: i just connect hdd independently of the board (but same power source)
<jonkerj> which would put it at absolute 8kB
ricardocrudo has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<jonkerj> not 8kB after table
<wild> nice tkaiser, good news
<jonkerj> (table/mbr = 512b)
<KotCzarny> jonkerj: yes, 8kB after sd card's partition table
<tkaiser> KotCzarny: Yeah, that's your problem. Everyone else believes the story to simply use a 2.5" powered by the board.
<KotCzarny> :)
apritzel has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<tkaiser> wild: Just look into the wiki. One year ago when the horrible main banana forum was somewhere else you could've read there what people did to get a SATA disk even powered (since vendor was/is clueless about his own hardware)
<jonkerj> ah I see, 8kb after start of part.table, I thought end
<KotCzarny> wild: also keep in mind that crappy microusb chargers/cables wont even deliver that much
<jonkerj> roger that
<KotCzarny> jonkerj: might be my fault not to word it clearly, usual thought shortcut
<jonkerj> I've bought a 5V/6A power brick from ebay to feed a bunch of Orange Pi's, works a lot better than random wallwarts
<jonkerj> no prob, my brain is in confusion mode
<wild> Kotczarny, i keep in mind that, i'am gonna use a 5v 3A.
<jonkerj> :-)
<jonkerj> oh and always remember: when you connect cheap ebay stuff to your mains, take proper fire precautions as they might or will catch fire and burn down your house
yann has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<jonkerj> I have had many wallwarts produce proper flames
<KotCzarny> wild: also, dont use that board for anything data-sensitive, its switch is dumb (ie. before its configured it exposes your whole internal network to the outside world)
<wild> kotczarny, i just want use it for a dokuwiki :)
<KotCzarny> but for home uses its quite reliable (got 114days of uptime on mine already, would be more if i didnt have to reconnect power)
<wild> whith arclinux

<wild> i don't understant kotczarny your question (sorry i am french)
<KotCzarny> 'where is the ship that say boot' - what does it mean?
<wild> From google translate : chip, puce, flea, microchip, midget
<jonkerj> ah, chip
<jonkerj> I thinks he wants to know where u-boot is stored on the board
<wild> yes
<jonkerj> which chip, flash, card, etc
<KotCzarny> sd card
mpmc has joined #linux-sunxi
<jonkerj> sd is really useful for testing if uboot works

<jonkerj> if it doesnt, you take it out and reflash on other box

<tkaiser> apritzel: You were IIRC interested in Clearfog (Base/Pro)?
<wild> sorry i love archlinux lol
<KotCzarny> :)
<tkaiser> wild: There exist two kinds of SD cards, crappy and good ones. I would take the latter since price differs not that much (actually crappy Kingston costs more than Samsung EVO)
<KotCzarny> crapston
gzamboni has quit [Quit: Ex-Chat]
<wild> tkaiser, i m gonna use Samsung evo 850 and (bad/crappy/good) SD card is not designed to run an operating system (less to read all the bones in RAM)
<KotCzarny> if you minimize writes, good sd card can be quite reliable

<tkaiser> A bit weird to test 3 SSD and 2 HDD but worth the efforts since i.MX6 and A20 numbers using same equipment are now also available.
<miasma> i really wonder why people buy these rpi accessories that enable them to use expensive sata ssds with a rpi shield. it's really expensive and the performance sucks
<miasma> they often say that performance is irrelevant since they're trying to learn things
<KotCzarny> miasma, usual trick of the marketing, start them cheap, rip them off later
<apritzel> tkaiser: great, thanks a ton. Sounds indeed very good. If it just wouldn't be "ye olde v7" without virt ext :-(
<tkaiser> apritzel: Then you've to wait for the 8040 ;)
<miasma> KotCzarny: the ssd shield is $69
<KotCzarny> lol
<KotCzarny> seriously?
<miasma> yes

<tkaiser> miasma: Huge market, clueless target audience... perfect!
<miasma> they claim write speeds of 58.7 MB/s
<KotCzarny> rrrright
<miasma> via usb2
<tkaiser> miasma: and if they provide the 'correct' dd pseudo-benchmark call (measuring FS buffers) then happy users can get these numbers at home too. Isn't it great?!
<KotCzarny> (and it's confirmed by Solid-Run engineers that Clearfog Pro can max out 3 x SATA 3.0 in parallel with fast SSDs :) )
<KotCzarny> now that's how it should be
<jelle> yo
<jelle> tkaiser: costly though

<jelle> lol my nas is currently a single core ppc with 128 MB ram
<tkaiser> Those Pi SSD folks know their business: 'We recommend our 60W Universal Input 12V @ 5A supply'. And the clueless crowd is happy... 60W! What a beast!
<KotCzarny> jelle, why not banana?
<jonkerj> 60w pmpo
<jelle> KotCzarny: well this has sata and does raid 1 ( old synology)
<jelle> ohwait banana does raid 1 too
<jelle> s/raid 1/sata/g
<KotCzarny> lol
<tkaiser> jelle: Smart people don't do RAID-1 ;)
<KotCzarny> wifi disabled/lan disconnected
<jelle> tkaiser: they raid 5?
<KotCzarny> seriously
<jelle> KotCzarny: valid use case right :P
<miasma> tkaiser: i suppose that also works as a powered hub and powers the whole board?
<tkaiser> jelle: RAID-5 with modern disks would be even more weird :)
<jelle> tkaiser: now I'm even more confused
<KotCzarny> i've read that raid5 with modern disks is pointless
<tkaiser> miasma: Maybe, but it's BS anyway :)
<miasma> tkaiser: i wouldn't buy it. i wouldn't buy the hifi pi boards either. I bought a pcm2704 dac from ebay and it's just perfect. just wanted to see how good the cheapest dacs are
<KotCzarny> something about 10^14 error rate on disks
<KotCzarny> and capacities
<tkaiser> jelle: RAID-1 (and the other redundant RAID level) are only about data availability. Nothing else. And most RAID-1 implementations are crap (they write stuff to two disks, don't check data and when it's about reading they return defective data from one disk)
<jelle> tkaiser: oh sich
<jelle> yeha iirc synology wrote their own raid 1 thing...
<jelle> which is probably horrible and sad
<tkaiser> if RAID-1 with Linux then I would only use btrfs raid-1 (since checksums, since data from both disks will be written, since when data corruption is detected, data will be repaired)
<miasma> raidz1/raidz2 or btrfs (if you're willing to experiment) ftw
<jelle> I'll think about it when buying a nas, but then again might get an ssd nas
<KotCzarny> old article, things might have changed since then
<tkaiser> But I wouldn't waste a disk for that. I would use an A20 device with a SATA disk containing the productive data and use an USB connected disk to store snapshots
<jelle> can't even fill up 1 TB atm
<KotCzarny> hehe
<tkaiser> jelle: And in case you start with SSDs and RAID-1 please choose two different SSD!
<jelle> hah smart move
<tkaiser> jelle: Not smart, it's necessary. SSD die for different reasons. If you're affected by firmware bugs so that SSDs stop working after x hours then a RAID-1 made of same SSDs is pretty useless.
<jelle> yup
<jelle> anyway if allwinner made something with 2 x SATA that'd be nice :)

<KotCzarny> your best bet is to take some hw raid card
<tkaiser> KotCzarny: Are you kidding?!
<tkaiser> Crappy el cheapo hardware raid controller thwart the whole 'availability' idea of RAID. You need a 2nd card in the drawer since this is just another single point of failure.
<KotCzarny> if you want availability, then you setup multiple servers (redundancy)
<tkaiser> people don't want availability, they want somehow 'data security/safety' and then choose RAID. Avoiding RAID and replacing it with a good backup concept (or modern FS, snapshots and sending them to another location) is the better idea.
<KotCzarny> in ideal world, one could just upload data to the internet
<KotCzarny> hum
<KotCzarny> pretty expensive
<KotCzarny> but also pretty nice
<tkaiser> KotCzarny: Yeah, put your data on such a BS device and then let the controller die. Then you know what you get with your non-RAID (R is for redundant, HW RAID is the opposite)
<KotCzarny> im more interested in port multiplying capability
<tkaiser> KotCzarny: then choose the even more crappy JMB321 'solution'
<miasma> tkaiser: have you ever benchmarked those $1 to $2 usb-sata adapters? i probably should. my plan was to find the cheapest combo for a music player and I picked those + a laptop hdd + orange pi pc (one didn't have enough usb connectors for my needs)
<tkaiser> miasma: What's inside? What does 'lsusb' tell?
<miasma> let's see
<jelle> that's insane cheap :p
<miasma> Bus 003 Device 048: ID 14cd:6116 Super Top M6116 SATA Bridge
<tkaiser> miasma: Never heard.
Mr__Anderson has joined #linux-sunxi
<tkaiser> miasma: Great, just do a google search for 'm6116 sata bridge'. Only complaints :)
Mr__Anderson has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<KotCzarny> cheap hardware is cheap
<jelle> all rpi related
<KotCzarny> rpi people are cheap?
Mr__Anderson has joined #linux-sunxi
<tkaiser> KotCzarny: True, thise cheap/crappy JMB321 port multipliers for example start to corrupt data after 1-2 minutes without improved heat dissipation (and people won't recognize since they don't use btrfs that checks written data :) )
<miasma> tkaiser: the complaints seem to be about broken/missing drivers?
<KotCzarny> tkaiser, did you do extended tests with heatsinks? im curious if it can be made stable
<KotCzarny> miasma: its about buggy drivers that can corrupt YOUR data
<KotCzarny> so if you buy yourself one, do tests first
<miasma> tkaiser: i made some tests with dd. got around 37 MB/s when copying files (100 .. 2000 MB). not that bad. i'm mostly just using it for playing files from a readonly drive
<miasma> KotCzarny: sure, i wouldn't bet my life on those :P but it works for me for my purposes :)
<tkaiser> KotCzarny: Yes, using a rather huge heatsink I managed to get no further data corruption. But to be honest: I don't want to use chips that silently corrupt data even if the problem can be work-arounded with a heatsink and some ventilation. I call this broken.
<tkaiser> miasma: which OS image are you running on your H3 device?
<KotCzarny> i wonder if allwinner socs can also corrupt data when hot
<miasma> tkaiser: I use arch linux, but i've made my own squashfs image and my own overlayfs initramfs
<miasma> btw that 37 MB/s I got from i7 3770k and adata ssd
<tkaiser> miasma: ok, then check with pacman for an iozone(3) package and do some more heavy testing. At least to know whether the device is stable under constant high load.
<miasma> tkaiser: ok, will it break the soc by any chance?
<tkaiser> miasma: Never. Worst case would be filesystem corruption.
<tkaiser> That's why I like btrfs for such tests. When you do tests with iozone then data will be written (with checksums) and when it will be later read as part of the 'benchmark' any FS corruption will be reported. With ext4 for example minor corruptions will never be reported, only when FS structure is damaged then FS will be turned read-only.

<miasma> tkaiser: btrfs's nice. my mother in law needed some old 8GB sd card and I noticed with some usb dongles / sd cards (kingston, pny mostly) that ext3/fat don't really show any bad blocks, but when I filled the disk full of random garbage from /dev/urandom and did btrfs scrub, I found few errors. I redid the test for some new sd cards and also found bad blocks. they were totally unused. some of them I bought online from some chinese store, but also some ...
<miasma> ... local stores had broken cards
<miasma> it's probably not such a huge issue if your 64GB sd card had one bad block (512 bytes?)
<miasma> but btrfs can't handle bad blocks afaik, so it might not be the best for flash media
<tkaiser> miasma: But it might be an issue when your 64GB SD card is only 8 GB in size ;) Always check first: http://docs.armbian.com/User-Guide_Getting-Started/#how-to-prepare-a-sd-card
<KotCzarny> tkaiser, that's a corner case of being ripped off ;)
<miasma> luckily they weren't that bad
Mr__Anderson has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<tkaiser> KotCzarny: Why even thinking about. Check every flash media you buy immediately with F3 or H2testw and return crap also immediately. I had so many USB thumb drives that start to throttle after 2-3 minutes. Bye, bye and get the refund (since it's not 80 MB/s but just 2-3 MB/s when throttling starts to jump in)
