<rellla> hey, what is the best way to put the git commit number into version.h file? commit-hook works, but it's not easy maintainable for a more committers. makefile would be an option, but this depends on having "git" installed locally...
<wens> there is really no way to do it
<wens> there's no equivalent function of SVN:Id in git
<rellla> manual edit is a (bad) option, though
<NiteHawk> git describe --always --dirty
<mripard> rellla: the kernel generates the header at compile time
<mripard> and if git is not installed, falls back on the version
<rellla> mripard: ok thanks, i'll search the codepart ...
<plaes> rellla: scripts/setlocalversion in kernel source

<lennyraposo> libv
<lennyraposo> what are you recruiting for if you do not mind me asking?
<ssvb> lennyraposo: we just got some kind of a recruiter, shitting spam in the linux-sunxi mailing list
<lennyraposo> wow
<lennyraposo> total crap
<lennyraposo> dealing swith spam is a pain especially when you are running hosting servicews
<fire219> hosting services has to be the worst place to be when spam starts flying
<fire219> especially if its flying out of your server...
<lennyraposo> postfix hardening is a constant batlle
<lennyraposo> nevermind that
<lennyraposo> shell access can be a pain too

<a20lime2noboot> hello
<a20lime2noboot> I build a custom kernel and get a CACHE : misalign error and freeze on boot, anyone seen something similar?
cosm has quit [Quit: Leaving]
iamfrankenstein has quit [Quit: iamfrankenstein]
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: on which hardware? H3?
<a20lime2noboot> nope, on lime2
mossroy has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: sorry, no idea at the moment. There was http://lists.denx.de/pipermail/u-boot/2016-July/262030.html, but that hits only the sun8i-emac driver which isn't used on the A20.
<a20lime2noboot> I also tried a kernel from here https://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/ with the same results, could this have something to do with me not repartitioning the sd card..?
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: moment, let me try something....
<a20lime2noboot> yup seen that allready..
<a20lime2noboot> ok
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: I have just tried https://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/armhf/daily/netboot/SD-card-images/ on an A20-Lime-2: no problems here
<mnr> (just booted the board, but as you wrote that it hangs on boot...)
<a20lime2noboot> firmware is a kernel?
<mnr> The firmware file contains the u-boot
<mnr> Have you concatenated to two parts as described in the README?
<a20lime2noboot> it stops at kernel load u-boot seems to work
<mnr> You need both files, the "firmware" and the "partition" one.
<mnr> zcat firmware.A20-OLinuXino-Lime2.img.gz partition.img.gz > /dev/YOUR_SD_CARD_DEVICE
<a20lime2noboot> what I did was this I followed the instructions and dd the spl file from u-boot tools
<a20lime2noboot> which I buid. isn;t that a firmware?
<mnr> SPL is the first part of u-boot
<mnr> Please try the follwing_
<a20lime2noboot> ok shoot
<mnr> zcat firmware.A20-OLinuXino-Lime2.img.gz partition.img.gz > /dev/YOUR_SD_CARD_DEVICE
<mnr> That gives you an SD card image with SPL/U-Boot and a kernel with an initrd that contains the Debian installer
<mnr> This boots without problems on a Lime2 for me
afaerber has quit [Quit: Ex-Chat]
<a20lime2noboot> I allready have a debian installation there will it erase it ?
<mnr> Yes, that wipes the cards contents.

<a20lime2noboot> does it take a loot to boot to the installer?
<a20lime2noboot> I have a blinking cursor for sometime..
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: Should need less than 10 seconds
<mnr> What is the last output that you got?
apritzel has joined #linux-sunxi
<a20lime2noboot> hold on
<a20lime2noboot> there is an error about EHCI and the last thing it does is loading device tree
JohnDoe_71Rus has quit [Quit: KVIrc KVIrc Aria 4.9.2, revision: git-6627-gf708225, sources date: 20160102, built on: 2016-05-12 17:32:15 UTC git-6627-gf708225 http://www.kvirc.net/]
<a20lime2noboot> it is not bricked num lock on the keyboard is switchable but the last thing I see is a blank screen with a blinking cursos
<a20lime2noboot> cursor
<a20lime2noboot> it did not acquire an ip though
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: are you using usb keyboard and an HDMI monitor?
<a20lime2noboot> yes
<mnr> The Image is for serial console.
<mnr> That explains why you don't see anything
<mnr> The output happens on the serial console
<a20lime2noboot> oh ..
<mnr> Do you have a serial console cable?
<a20lime2noboot> If I recall correctly last debian I installed was with olimex firmware.
<a20lime2noboot> which made the hdmi working..
<mnr> The Olimex images aren't based on Mainline, but on the Allwinner u-boot/kernel.
<mnr> For HDMI support, please try the following:
<a20lime2noboot> shoot
<mnr> reset the board, press enter a number of times to make the u-boot autoboot process stop
<a20lime2noboot> ok
<mnr> You should then get a u-boot prompt
<mnr> At the u-boot prompt, run the following command
<mnr> setenv console tty0
<mnr> saveenv
boohouse has joined #linux-sunxi
<mnr> run bootcmd
<mnr> That should get you output on HDMI
<boohouse> I have a allwinner v3 SOC that I locked up editing a partition. I only have a full_img.fex and sunxi tools don't work to recover it
<a20lime2noboot> ok this is not an option since the keyboard is not detected early enough
<a20lime2noboot> maybe try to tweek something in the sd instead?
<boohouse> I have script.bin http://pastebin.com/QLmnUAKK
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: not in an easy way. It is technically possible to modify the u-boot environment on the card externally, but that's probably not a practical solution for you.
<boohouse> or rather fex
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: Don't you have a serial console cable?
<a20lime2noboot> there is not a boot.cmd in the sd..
<a20lime2noboot> nope unfortunately I do not.
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: that's correct. The boot process in mainline works differently from the Allwinner-style images
<a20lime2noboot> just boot.scr
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: boot.scr is the default boot script for mainline
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: One thing that you could try: if you have a USB hub, try connecting the keyboard via the hub.
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: Some USB keyboards make problems in u-boot when they are directly connected to the board.
<a20lime2noboot> let me try another keyb
ssvb has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
ssvb has joined #linux-sunxi
<a20lime2noboot> from what I understand the only solution is a serial cable, there is no way to create a new boot.scr ?
tgaz has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: Yes, you can modify the boot.scr
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: The boot.scr is a text file with a u-boot header.
<a20lime2noboot> if I follow this http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainline_Kernel_Howto shouldn't it work ?
<mnr> This is the content of boot.scr:
<mnr> You can insert a "setenv console tty0" at the beginning and then convert the file to u-boot format
<a20lime2noboot> ok I guess it is doable
<a20lime2noboot> yes I ll try and let you know
<a20lime2noboot> thanx a lot
<mnr> mkimage -T script -A arm -d boot.scr.raw boot.scr
<mnr> where boot.scr.raw is the plain-text version
<a20lime2noboot> there are a lot of variables such as kernel image or initrd files, it detects them or do I have to set them ?
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: Sorry, the link above shows the raw bootscript. It gets customized on installation.
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: you can take the existing boot.scr from the SD card, load it into a text editor, remove the garbage at the top (that's the u-boot header).
<a20lime2noboot> ok
<boohouse> writing full_img.fex to sd card with DD possible?
<mnr> boohouse: full_img.fex is a LiveSuit image?
<boohouse> it looks like raw image of the sdmmc inside
jbrown has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<boohouse> 0 documentation on this SOC :(
<mnr> boohouse: H3?
<boohouse> Allwinner V3 soc
<mnr> boohouse: never even heard of a "V3"
<boohouse> it is a video camera board
<boohouse> phoenix and livesuite says invalid image
<a20lime2noboot> mnr we are victorius :-)
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: :-)
<boohouse> i dd'd the system partition and now it hangs on startup.wav but doesn't load adb
<boohouse> like blank wav locked up the boot sequence or I squashfs ed the partition wrong
<a20lime2noboot> so now if I want to compile a new kernel on debian what do I have to do ?
<a20lime2noboot> do I create dtb file and dd it or not ?
paulk-aldrin has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: If you want to build an upstream kernel, just configure the source and then run "make bindeb-pkg"
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: That builds you a .deb package with kernel, dtb and initrd that you can install like any other Debian package
<a20lime2noboot> so I will just install it as a debian package afterwards right ?
<a20lime2noboot> ok thanx loot
<a20lime2noboot> lot even :-)
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: There is one issue, though.
<a20lime2noboot> ?
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: When the package gets installed, it creates a new boot.scr, which overwrites your change
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: you can change the template that gets used, though
<a20lime2noboot> so I will again have to make hdmi to work on boot right ?
<mnr> a20lime2noboot: The template boot.scr is in /etc/flash-kernel/bootscript/bootscr.sunxi
<a20lime2noboot> perfect !
<a20lime2noboot> as soon as it finishes I will edit it .
<a20lime2noboot> it is still installing..
<vagrantc> you could also replace boot.scr with boot.scr.uimg, if i remember correctly, leaving the original in place
<vagrantc> i think it tries boot.scr.uimg first
<a20lime2noboot> ok thanx a lot!
<boohouse> my soc is 0x1681
<boohouse> where do I find the sram address?
